Bounties are such a genius power level system, because it isn't a direct system of analysing strength, like actual "power levels" in Dragonball, but a rating of how dangerous you are PERCEIVED to be, to the world government, specifically. So a poor fighter who is somehow dangerous to the government will still have a high bouty, for example. It means the bounties never mean an opponent can't be beaten, while still setting the stakes of a big fight quickly and easily.
@meciocio
@meciocio Год назад
Oda had an attempt of introducing a classic power level measurement dbz style. It was called Doriki and the bigger number you had the bigger power. Like Rob Lucci had a doriki of 4,000. Thanks hod he thought it wasn't the best idea so he got rid of that quickly.
@garenthal9638
@garenthal9638 Год назад
Best CHANGE they made was that a warlord just doesn’t have a bounty number rather than the manga which would show what their bounty was when they got hired which ultimately short changes all of them on using bounty as power scaling

Being a pirate in this world either means you are a pirate in the 'traditional' sense (pillaging, robbing, ...) or you don't want to live under the (influence of the) World Government (beeing free, defying the established laws, ...). Luffy sees freedom and his life in piracy, Coby sees order and security in the Marine. But neither side can be categorized as totally good or bad, the world in this universe isn't black or white which I really love 😁

Guns are deadly to anyone who doesn't have a devil fruit power or the skill to dodge, deflect, or otherwise defend. If Zoro got hit with a bullet, it could be fatal. But it would be very hard to hit him because he's such a skilled swordsman that he'd most likely slice the bullet before it could.

One of the most beautiful aspects of One Piece is how simple its world appears. It is about a naïve rubber boy wanting to be a pirate while fighting the oppressive law enforcers of the sea. Who is good and who is bad is obvious, right? Yet in One Piece, nothing is ever quite as simple as it appears. There are layers and layers and layers. Most of those layers have slapstick comedy or over-the-top absurdness woven into their very fabric which manages to keep the story lighthearted, and yet the story won't shy away from very heavy topics like corruption, racism, slavery and genocide, all wrapped up in a a colorful bow-tie in a way only One Piece can deliver it by virtue of its length and expansive cast. The fact we get to experience this world through the eyes of a simpleton like Luffy who never talks down to anyone is a huge part of its innate charm.

Hey, i know i'm late to the party here but i wanted to add something about pirates in general. I grew up in Charleston South Carolina in the United States, a major coastal city that has a lot of pirate history and an area that was both a target and a refuge for pirates and privateers over the years. Growing up I loved pirates and they were often portrayed in a romantic way, not necessarily good but free to live how they chose, truly free. There were also "gentleman" pirates like Stede Bonnet who was a merchant that decided to become a pirate for fun and adventure and was generally considered a "kinder" pirate. But often I saw pirates portrayed much as One Piece portrays them, some real nasty pirates and some "good" pirates who are more your chaotic good rogue/swashbuckler type, the thief with a heart of gold. Anyway, just wanted to say that I growing up with pirate lore always loved and wanted to be one as a small kid just like Luffy, not to be like a real life cruel pirate, but to be the honorable rogue totally free, to jump on board your ship and sail off into the sunset with no rules and no ties to hold you back.
@storieswithstyle
@storieswithstyle Год назад
That is so cool to hear! =) We had a similar thing where I grew up, there was a pirate called "Störtebecker" and he is still a "celebrity" and they have named places after him and celebrate festivals nowadays. He also was an "honorable pirate". I just remembered that from your post, so thanks for making me remember that =) Really love that as a setup, because the trope of freedom is really interesting when explored through pirates and I can't wait to see where it goes =)

@sertaki
@sertaki Год назад
One thing I really enjoy that they gave Luffy a fighting style very much in my eyes inspired by Drunken Boxing Kung Fu!. It really fits his whole "I don't really care, let's have some fun here!" vibes. And being somebody whose very core of being is about _being flexible_, it's just such a perfect fit. Just wobbling around, dodging out of the way, making opponents punch each other... I see a lot of Jackie Chan in the way he approaches conflict. Deescalating with charm when possible, trying to enjoy it when battles erupt about small bs, etc. And when it gets really serious, he switches gears into "you just pissed off the nice Kung Fu master who was just vibing, and he will obliterate your whole town", which makes for a very rewarding switch of attitude and really underscores the seriousness of things when stuff goes south.
@sertaki
@sertaki Год назад
And one more note on that: Drunken Fist Kung Fu may look like it's just random movements and you could actually perform it drunk, but it's actually one of the most difficult styles to master because it requires an absolutely insane amount of body control, flexibility and balance to not just fall over your own legs. So it's fun to see the guy who is all about just vibing and being silly doing these crazy elaborate moves that look erratic but are quite complex and almost acrobatic in nature. It shows that Luffy is more than just the fool he appears as on the surface.
@storieswithstyle

True, he seems to do a lot of drunk kung fu fighting. Now that you say it I can see it clearly. I knew it looked familiar =) Ruffy is really well portrayed and written. I love that he is so casual and fun until something happens where he gets reeally serious. =)

I just finished the season about 15 minutes ago. I'm a longtime fan of the manga, I've been reading it since I was 16 (dear god in heaven that was 20 years ago) and have read it from start to finish several times, this story, thesse characters, have been a part of my life for so long it is impossible to explain how important this show was going to be to me, and so many others. The fact that it's not only a good adaptation, but a MASTERFUL one that completely nails the spirit and emotion and character of the original while bringing the series to life in a stylised way that suits the story so perfectly it hurts. I cried several times watching it, almost once an episode, and I don't think that emotion came purely from me being a fan, but from a creative team that knew exactly how to make me laugh and cry.

@sertaki
@sertaki Год назад
I'm still blown away that this series not only works at all, but actually _completely_ nails everything important about One Piece, and then goes above and beyond. Like, I was really worried that it will look really bad and simply not function well in live-action. It looks wonderful, they lean perfectly into the cartoonish weirdness of everything and actually strike the balance of purposefully making everything weird and bizarre, but still keeping a very consistent feel and look where the weirdness feels like it's the only way things could be! And from what I have seen of the series so far, every. single. casting. choice. is. extremely. on. point. Luffy, Zorro and Nami all feel like they burst out of the manga. Even the more crazy character designs like Morgan and Buggy look consistent with what reality seems to be in the show. Corby is perfect, his acting captures everything what we get in the manga at this point, but adds additional layers of trauma and conditioned fear responses - but also a hidden bravery that needs to be uncovered through all the layers of anxiety and fear built up over the years. Buggy. Holy shit Buggy. He was extremely fun in the manga/anime in this story line, but he was a bit one-note and definitely not very deep beyond "weird crazy clown who doesn't care about civilians and wants all for himself". But wow did this version of the story blow a whole new dimension into his character! They added a very dark and twisted layer onto him, adding this disturbing horror show with a tortured audience, and clearly took a very big bite from Heath Ledger's Joker performance, but man, it just works! I don't have any issues with manga/anime Buggy in this storyline, but this new Buggy is simply superior. And I hope they do more really interesting and crazy stuff with him! Like, it's clear that certain stories are being re-shuffled a bit and some merged or overlapped etc. It obviously had to be done, or we would be waiting for 20 years to get a resolution of the series in live-action. But this necessity really opens up opportunities for some really creative takes on the material, some characters that the manga might disregard for hundreds of episodes before they come back may end up getting a much more pronounced presence as recurring villains/allies in this version, instead of just vanishing for 5 years - and for a live-action series, that just works so much better! And I love seeing interesting things being done in adaptations of stories I love - I don't just want so see the same identical content again.

In the manga, Nami takes a while to get actually more strongly involved in the actual fighting scenes and usually has more of a tactician/brain role in the central events, while getting to have a secondary battle from time to time . I like that they made her more of a badass with that staff in combat in the live-action series - apart from making her less of a potential damsel in distress, it just makes for much more fun, entertaining and cooler choreographed fighting scenes with the gang all using very different styles and weapons to smack people around! The big all-out brawl at the end of this episode is a great example. In the manga/anime, it's really just Zorro and Luffy bouncing off each other and comboing down the marines and Morgan, before even meeting Nami - which works well at the slower pace of the story. But here, the series really does a nice job of moving the plot along through some circumstantial bonding in battle and infiltration, but it never feels forced! In general, the series does so far a masterful job at taking bits and pieces from different arcs and sub-arcs that are visited in a more sequential manner in the original and creating a more intricate web of plot lines and character threads that weave into each other to make all the transitions between plot beats as well as decisions for actions and where to go next and such _really_ work! A great example for this is Luffy's flashbacks. In the manga, it's just a big chunk of story that the whole series starts out with, told sequentially in the first few chapters, and then moves to "Luffy in a barrel on the sea" once he gets his hat. In the anime, we start with the barrel and all the Alvida stuff, and then get the whole flashback in one chunk. Very similar style. But here, the writers and directors went really deep into complex storytelling, cutting the flashback into smaller chunks and then delivering them in moments that actually make complete sense for Luffy to think about his past, in the actual scene! First, some throway line gives us a small glimpse of Shanks, then Corby asks him about how he got his powers and we see him eating the fruit - but this approach really really shines in episode 2, when the most essential part of the flashback, the traumatic events that inspired Luffy to become the greatest pirate, are forcibly dragged out of his memory by Buggy. Luffy didn't just randomly remember these dark moments - he was specifically made to think about them by a psychopath who was torturing him and attempting to kill both him and his crew for his amusement, doing a whole Hannibal Lector "Tell me all about your trauma, I want to enjoy it!" routine. Brilliant stuff.
@storieswithstyle
@storieswithstyle Год назад
Yes, I don't remember Nami ever fighting, and I like that she uses a staff. Fits her really well I think. I also agree that the way the episode is written flows really well. I do not know what the source material is like, but from your dexcription they really nailed condensing some more "drawn out stuff". =)

So cool to have someone, who is not really into One Piece (but also not a total stranger to it) react to this show. I have been a fan since my childhood. And this Lice Action Show is enjoyable. I probably won't be for everyone. But there is two things that really hooked me: The show does not hide from the absurdity, cartoonishness and humour of the One Piece world. They tone it down just enough for it to not be cringe in Live Action. Same goes for the characters. The cast ist cool and the Strawhats just feel... right. And the sets! The sets are so fucking cool. There are at least two to three amazing setpieces in every episode. Also... what do you mean? Snails as telephones. What is there not to understand? No seriously. This just hits the mark on how ridiculous One Piece is and I love it :) Just some facts about the adaptation and original story (free of spoilers): 1 - The Birds (Seagulls) with Bags are the primary method of delivering the newspapers to all the different islands. Once the bountys start going up, we will see a lot more of the dropping Wanted Posters everywhere. 2 - The whole thing on Alvidas ship pretty much plays out like this in the original. Just even more goofy. 3 - When Shanks arrives in Windmill Village you can see a "Marine" crate on his ship. He definitely either raided a base or ruined some poor Marine Captains day, which hints at his ability to at least somewhat mess with the government. 4 - The flashback story in Windmill Village is generally referred to as "Romance Dawn". If I remember correctly it is shown as one consistent story block in the original. With this version they spread it out much more and try to find spots in the main stories, where the flashbacks can somewhat elevate certain situations. Feels a bit more modern and less clumsy this way. Remember: the original came out in the late 90s. 5 - (EDIT: I got this wrong. Read first comment) Zoro's first fight is a new insert, that was not part of the original. However - expect to see more of this Baroque Company in the future. The writing staff probably wanted non-fans to understand Zoros strength a bit earlier... even though Shells Town does a fine job with that. BUT hinting at some of the big stories and factions early is defintitely a great idea! It makes the world feel much more interconnected and coherent. Something that Oda started focusing on later down the line. Fun Fact: Oda was 17 (I think) when he came up with One Piece. 6 - Shanks is the focking GOAT! 8 - Zoro was simply a bounty hunter before joining the Straw Hats. Don't worry, we get a flashback sequence for him :D 7 - Shells Town plays out differently in the original. The way they capture Zoro is tied directly to the Marines threatening to punish the little girl and him taking her place. In general the show tries to be a little bit quicker about the getting together of Luffys first Crew members. This first season covers around 40 - 50 episodes from the anime. So the Live Action version will have to cut a lot of stuff out. Some characters simply don't exist. There definitely is a focus on getting to the emotional and high stake stories of the Strawhat Crew. But honestly. I don't mind. Rewatching the early One Piece episodes can feel very slow, even though I remember them fondly. Having a blast with this show and really hope this Season performs well enough for future seasons and maybe, just maybe an even higher budget...

I do know the connotation, I think, but it is indeed weird as the german equivalent is used as "mentally stuck person/ person having a mind fart" and also is used only situationally and also the most tame "curse word" . So it is a cultural difference I was not aware of, thanks for letting me know! =)

The original definition of the R word in English and the one you will still find in dictionaries is a verb “to hinder or hold back.” It was applied to disabled people as an adjective and then a noun in the 70s-90s. As with most neutral words applied to disliked/discriminated against minorities it gradually became incredibly derogatory (“special” and “handicapped” suffer the same transition to a milder degree). It’s a major slur today and will inspire a visceral reaction of hurt in English. Connotations are always the hardest part when shifting between languages and cultural contexts. It can be found at 18:36 and 18:42

Thanks, I will try to mute it! =) Yeah, using it as a noun is also really bad here in germany slur wise, weird that the adjective has not changed. @@ms-literary6320

I highly recommend watching this in Japanese with subtitles. Normally, I always go for the original version of anything with subs (if I don't speak the language) - but I make an exception for this series, even though the original actor deliveries are really really good. But man, they got the original anime voice cast of One Piece to do the dubs, and it's extremely fun to watch. It took me a moment to not be disturbed by hearing those anime voices I am so used to come out of real human lips - but I love it. Definitely has a much different overall vibe and the dialogue was slightly adapted to be closer to the Japanese manga in places, but it's really fun. Do yourself a favor and at least check out the intro narration of episode 1 in Japanese :D

I might check out the Japanese dub down the line =) Normally I always watch stuff with subs, but I want to feel the actors more. Like, I know seiyuus are excellent and the best vas in the world, but still, I like the original versions "more" most of the time. Probably because here in Germany they dub a lot and it is to varying success :D

The Guns 🔫 in one piece is DEADLY for normal people but useless against people like Luffy who have special magic powers or people who have superhuman strength.... One Piece is a fantasy-action show. Reality is mixed some fantasy powers.

I will probably read the manga. The anime is probably too long to do for me, too little time with work and everything =( I am thinking about reading arcs and reviewing them, perhaps also film my reaction and add that, but copyright is probably gonna stop me from doing more =(

One thing that always bothered me about the Gum-Gum powers was the functionality of Luffy's respiratory system. When you stretch, that makes a longer skinnier trachea, right? And how about how that affects the surface area of the blood vessels in his lungs? And how about that one scene in the manga where Luffy's body was trapped on the sea floor, while his neck was stretched all the way to land, and he was getting CPR? I might be just looking at the wrong side of things with this, but I can't be the only person with these types of questions. Even if your body is made of rubber, it requires certain things to function.
@Whitewingdevil
@Whitewingdevil Год назад
Weirdly enough, this is kindof addressed in his Gear Two transformation. The explanation for it relies on how his respiratory and circulatory systems work, though everything is up in the air after Gear Five.

@zoa1-99....... As I said, I remember him as someone who could turn into smoke. I remember nothing else. He did not even appear in this episode. I understand your concerns, but the reaction to the story is blind, and that is what I consider "blind". Why does it matter that I know what charaters looked like. Also, thanks for spoiling his name, I guess, and that I should expect him in season 2. I have not even finished season 1 and I while I get your point, please don't tell me about things that are gonna happen.
