Here is a full review of the first episode of Age of Samurai: Battle For Japan, which was recently published on Netflix. Is it historically accurate? Good? Bad? Let's find out.
Link to the shogunate channel / @theshogunate
Samurai were the military nobility and officer caste of medieval and early-modern Japan.
In Japanese, they are usually referred to as bushi or buke.
By the end of the 12th century, samurai became almost entirely synonymous with bushi, and the word was closely associated with the middle and upper echelons of the warrior class. The samurai were usually associated with a clan and their lord, and were trained as officers in military tactics and grand strategy. While the samurai numbered less than 10% of then Japan's population, their teachings can still be found today in both everyday life and in modern Japanese martial arts.
As aristocrats for centuries, samurai developed their own cultures that influenced Japanese culture as a whole. The culture associated with the samurai such as the tea ceremony, monochrome ink painting, rock gardens and poetry were adopted by warrior patrons throughout the centuries 1200-1600. These practices were adapted from the Chinese arts.
In general, samurai, aristocrats, and priests had a very high literacy rate in kanji. Recent studies have shown that literacy in kanji among other groups in society was somewhat higher than previously understood.
Some samurai had buke bunko, or "warrior library", a personal library that held texts on strategy, the science of warfare, and other documents that would have proved useful during the warring era of feudal Japan. One such library held 20,000 volumes. The upper class had Kuge bunko, or "family libraries", that held classics, Buddhist sacred texts, family histories, as well as genealogical records.
A samurai was usually named by combining one kanji from his father or grandfather and one new kanji. Samurai normally used only a small part of their total name.

If that’s the direct quote from the show, then they’re not wrong. They’re not saying “it is the finest sword,” but “it is regarded as the finest sword.” A lot of misinformed people do believe it’s the greatest sword ever made. However, it seems the show didn’t clarify or correct the misconception, and they also show the katana as the main battlefield weapon, so there’s that...

I think the production crew largely didn't know much about Japanese history so much of what the talking-head historians were saying to them (and probably ended up on the editing room floor) went over their heads. They went with what they knew and what they thought their audience knew which isn't much. So a lot of things that could have really pushed the docuseries into interesting territories was missed.

My wife, who is Japanese, is a big fan of historical books "fiction" (stories based on/featuring real events/people) and has read a lot about this period, so when I found the series on Netflix and started watching, she was amused. Neither of us is as well-studied on the weapons and armor side as you, but even I noticed some jarring things, and my wife probably simply won't watch it. The style is typical for the current generation of comic-induced productions. One of my daughters remarked that everyone performing seppuku appears to first go to a room with a nice clean set of tatami mats, so they could get a fly-over shot of the quickly growing pool of blood on it. File under "light entertainment" with a note of "gory" and unfortunately a large dose of accurate history in the storylines, so not so easily dismissable.

Materials were fine it's a repeated myth on the internet that it was bad Japan even had a solid iron ore comparable to the best in Europe, technology was also comparable to the rest of the world, Japanese swords were used against foreign enemies and did well, Japanese blades were actually adopted all over Asia for combat use, it wasn't a specialized cutter but could stab(can have very tips) particularly with the edge held up or hold sideways and deliver blunt force trauma, Europe had their own versions like the Swiss saber, blades were not brittle ones not from later sword making Traditions anyway which is what people are usually familiar with. I have watched the series and I must say that expertise of those historians who took part in narrating the series is debatable, at best. Sometimes I think they weren't really sure what they are saying, oftentimes it sounded like someone just gave them a script to read, like it wasn't their real opinion on things. The thing about katana being the best sword in history also kind of set the tone for the rest of this production, as I am aware of at least one blade that is regarded better (Polish hussar saber). I was also expecting more on how the trade-off with Portuguese happened and how on Earth did Japanese came into possession of arquebuses. I think that definitely the series had some specific audience to please and they kinda did. Not meaning to sound rude, but I think it was done in a way that 'eh, Americans are not going to delve too deep into this so why bother?'. Usually documentaries on Netflix are really good, but this one not really. As a show - great thing to watch. As a piece of educational content - not quite.

On the katana “being regarded [by many] as the finest sword,” then the docuseries is not wrong. They’re not saying “it is the finest sword,” but “it is regarded as the finest sword.” A lot of misinformed people do believe it’s the greatest sword ever made, thanks to Western [and Eastern] media. However, it seems the show didn’t clarify or correct the misconception, and they also show the katana as the main battlefield weapon, so there’s that...

Network TV being Network TV. I’m surprised how they haven’t tried to adapt to online content you find. Long format, simple editing, subject matter experts that’s entertaining on it’s face. The 1000 cut a minute focus pulled close up shots and a random B camera that distracts you, with dramatic music to force emotion. Accuracy doesn’t have to be sacrificed for entertainment. History is interesting & fascinating at it’s face, no need to really dress it up.

@ХристоМартунковграфЛозенски
On the katana, there's the popular reputation of it as some sort of literal lightsabre. This plus that scene in The Last Samurai where Tom Cruise's neck gets cut by a samurai's katana just by him sliding the sword on Cruise's neck made me think that the katana was indeed a very sharp sword.... until I started watching Skallagrim. He makes a lot of cutting tests, especially in tameshigiri and you can see that there are many different types of swords who cut just as well, if not better, than some katanas. You watch Skall's tests and acquire a much more realistic perspective on swords and sword cutting. And then there's Shadiversity's series on the katana.

Another type of armor, which a Samurai wore under his Dou (Cuirass) to cover the gap on his belly, was a kind of mail shirt/vest or even mail voider. The Samurai chose either Manchira (a kind of Brigandine) or mail (woven chain), because either of it provided with some protection for him, but was not as rigid as plate armor on his actual Dou, so it still provide with some mobility.

I have seen many Japanese Drama series based on the very late sengoku and mostly Edo period where even the "pretty boy" main character uses Chonmage, Because you know.. in that period Samurai rarely need to wear their armor but at least you know which one is a samurai by looking at their hair even if the characters were totally fictional. Believe me, you can see a chonmage from a mile.

"Regarded as the best sword" is different from it objectively is. It isn't inaccurate to say in modern times many people do regard the katana as the best sword in history. Also this really shouldn't be as big of a problem to people as it is. Regarding something as "the best" is highly subjective and contextual. I personally love Polish sabers more than Katana, those curves, the fuller the thumb ring, beautiful swords that had a ton of work and craftmanship put into them, but I really don't have a problem with anyone if they personally think Katana or Shamshir, or tulwar, or Polish sabers are whatever are "the best", it's totally a subjective personal choice that people come to for various reasons. What is the best to you or me might be different and that is totally fine. There is so much context of what "the best" even means, what year, what location, what type of enemy are you fighting, artistic style etc etc. People need to chill with the katana bashing it's becoming as obnoxious as the katana fanboys. Yes the Katana isn't some lightsaber that is made by pure magic and folded 50 million times; a sword that is capable of cutting through a modern army tank. Some real dumb myths about katanas being almost magic absolutely did exist on the internet years ago, I remember it well back in the early 2000s. However these days 9 times out of 10 It's people bashing katanas and "myth busting" myths that have been thoroughly debunked for decades. Seriously I can't even remember the last time I saw someone spreading these myths in the last 10 years, but I see people bashing katana as if it makes them clever on a almost daily basis.

Thanks to your channel and others like you, I could tell that there is something off about the show. And I'm so glad you made a review. The katana use was the first thing that popped out. For years now I've been coming up with the lore for the Japan-like fantasy world and the story begins with a battle that a reader (if I ever write it) should find suspicious because the samurai are having a Hollywood style katana battle. That should be one of the first clues that the two sides are actually working together and that the battle was a just a show. Every warrior character in my story has a spear as a primary weapon because you know, they want to stay alive longer...

@@eagle162 I've created artwork based on it but not a lot since I don't have a lot of free time and I'm waiting to get better and then get into it for realz. Some of them are obvious paintings of samurai but a landscapes like "Horns of Chaos, "Tumbling Cliffs", Yamato Lands" are world building concepts. Also a 4 page comicbook "The Gift". You'll probably hate that I painted a Ninja like the fantasy idea of a ninja but it is a fantasy world after all and dammit, fantasy ninja look cool! One the reasons why I think movies like to remove a main character’s helmet during a fight is because the actor/ actress wants to make sure their face is on screen and it might be harder to film some fight scenes while wearing the helmet for them. Though Star Wars has shown a character doesn’t need to show their face to leave an impression on the viewers. Other characters that show this are Talia in Mass Effect and Master Chief from Halo.

I always say exactly the same about helmets. There are heaps of characters with iconic helmets and hats. Iron Man, Batman, Darth Vader, Indiana Jones, Van Helsing... The list goes on and on. Feudal time armour gives so many options for crests and decorations to make stunning and iconic helmets. SO WHY DO THE HEROES ALWAYS FIGHT WITHOUT HELMETS??? A fight just doesn't feel dangerous if they choose to not wear head protection.
