As always THANK YOU for watching, In every video I answer every one of your dog training questions so don't forget to leave your dog training questions in the comments below!
Thomas Davis America's Canine Educator goes over the difference between true aggression and fear. In this video you will see how a fearful dog can be misunderstood as being aggressive. This german shepherd is reacting to his owner in a very unpleasant way. Thomas quickly illustrates that the dogs behavior is a direct result of who is handling him. Check the time stamps below to start from multiple points in the training.
00:57 -Disclaimer- Do not approach an aggressive dog.
01:38 -- Thomas calms cooper down
05:45 -- owner starts working with Cooper
07:13 -- Thomas explains "what just happened"
08:55 -- The corrections!
13:00 -- If this were a Chihuahua
14:40 -- That was fear?

That lady is ridiculously aggressive with the dog. Gosh. You were a hero for that poor pup
@Gojofangirl
@Gojofangirl 5 лет назад
you people need to stop beign such smartpants and recognise that that lady despite being old, adopted a pup from a shelter (a big pup in this case) and sought help from experts. She could have very much returned or even worse abandoned the dog. So stop the negativity geniuses!

@@Gojofangirl while I agree that yes, she deserves credit for seeking help from an expert, the shelter should not have allowed this elderly woman to adopt this particular dog. Adopting a dog is not a simple decision, trust me, I know, ,but this dog just doesn't look like it has any interest or connection with her.

She’s scared of the dog. I don’t see him doing anything particularly unusual. Right now he’s too much for her and I get that but he’s certainly trainable.

A female I had, decades ago, who worked well with me but not my husband. When she was about a year old I took them to another trainer. He watched me work with her then my husband. Then he went to my husband & told him "your the problem". That's ok, he's not a handler.

I understand people want a strong positive force in their life perhaps to balance us out. The problem is abuse towards the Dog when we project our insecurities and then assume that the Dog is broken. Education like this is very important for people looking for a Dog. Like the saying goes, "check yo self before you wreck yo self"

I just found your videos and really enjoy them! I have a 10 month old German Shepherd with this exact problem (goodwill hunting)... he was very well educated, but quiet anxious and we worked really hard in making him as confident and socializing him as much as possible (from puppy classes, to dog parks, hiking, swimming, etc). As of two months ago, he has become overly aggressive, I think of fear, but the bigger he grows the harder it is for me to handle him and take him out. I’m gaining a lot of tips from you and appreciate your videos. I want a happy dog that I can take out and enjoy life with, but I have to learn to train myself for sure. He deserves a happy and full life, and handlers insecurities shouldn’t be a reason for these dogs to suffer.

Had to have a similar conversation with someone with 2 GSD's last weekend. The dogs are fine in my hands but as soon as I hand them back there is a complete change in the dogs. So important that the dogs feel safe with the handler/owner.Sadly many dog owners don't have the correct "energy" for this type of behaviour. I like your straight forward way of talking to the owners. I do the same.Some things have to be said. Well done Tom :)

Fair to say that majority of training will be training the handler as opposed to the animal ?

This is true! I used to be one of these dog owners who didn’t have the right energy and/or mental state to handle the type of dog I have. Now we’re fine, but at the beginning I was for sure the problem believing he was the problem. Ofc we’re still learning together after 3 years, but now is fun for both of us.

Tom has the capacity to read dogs as well as people and his gift is to translate his understanding of dogs to their owners. He is committed to helping owners understand their dogs so that dogs can have a happy life. Sometimes the owner has the capacity to learn how to work with the dog and sometimes not. This is monumental!

I really appreciate this! I've been training my GSD, and a lot of videos and classes focus just on how to teach specific tricks. My boy is quite barky, and when it comes to him barking at people I know I'M too reactive, and make it worse. I want to set him up for success by being a better handler. Not much training material for that, just reading him and myself as much as possible.

I don't understand why this nice lady wants a dog of this caliber and mind set. She would be better matched to a smaller, kinder breed of dog. Not a dog that is naturally a guardian. This is, in my humble opinion, a tragedy in the making, both for her, and the dog. She can't be what the dog needs, and, the dog can't be anything other than what he is. Collie's will herd, bird dog's will naturally point and flush, Border Collies are a working breed, who will go berserk if they can't work, GSD's, Preso Canario, Doberman, Fila Braziliero, and other Guard dog's are breed to protect. Good investigation of breed history is necessary before buying a dog.

Training is not just for dogs but it is for people with dogs. To just look for match up" and not train is not the way to go. And to think that just training a dog is the way to go is also wrong . Training is for handler so that he /she knows how to train, handle and and control their dog. To just train a dog and give it to untrained owner is very bad way to go almost as bad as to take such dog away from a handler. The most important function of the handler is to learn from good trainer how to change their attitude toward their problem dogs. Of course some people cannot or will not do.

Exactly im a dog behaviorist and specialize in rehabilitation. I am also the kennel coordinator at my local rescue i see first hand what happens when dogs dont stay in their homes helping the owner to help the dog is the first step. So many dogs are euthanized for totally fixable behavioral problems and its not fair. At my rescue we are no-kill and ive changed the whole dynamic of how we run our facility being on the board of directors. If a dog and owner are can stay together i feel its my duty to keep them together so they dont go into a new home with the same issues and come back again it makes no sense

This is a random questions but when it comes to marking negative behavior with the word NO and no is gunna be the consistent marker for marking negative behavior. Should the NO be paired with a correction or a correction followed by the NO. Which technique clearly communicates to the dog better, also making the NO mean more. Thanks.

You are right in some way. But in times of internet it is an easy thing to do some research before getting a dog. German Shepherds are one of the bigger breeds, and (alpha or not) require a great deal of mental and physical exercise.That is just a fact. So people should be realistic about their limitations in owning strong or agile breeds. I'm sorry for the lady, but also for the dog, who in the right hands will make a great companion.

This dog needs to be taken to the vet. He has an unclean moving pattern and I would guess it’s hip dysplasia in his left rare leg. It also looks like he has uneven muscles if you compare the left and the right leg from behind when he is walking, which is common when they have HD and are unwilling to put pressure on the leg that’s hurting. I think his problems would be better with a lot of your training and also pain medications. I’m no vet but i have a gsd male with HD in his left rare leg and he is moving just like that and gets a lot more anxious when he is in pain.

birdie most people with small dogs become scared or defensive for their dog and the dog senses that and makes it become fear aggressive because of this. Alot of people will pick up their small dog when around other dogs which can trigger aggression because the dog cant escape. Plus dachshunds were recently determined one of the top 2 aggressive dogs.

Mellissa Conway most trainers that say no are positive only. They are taught to reject higher intensity dogs or aggressive dogs because positive only methods do not work on them.

I am a trainer with 30 years of experience and I agree with everything you are saying and doing except one. Why on earth are you using a mesh muzzle?? Those are only supposed to be used for 15 minutes at a time because they don't allow the dog to pant, and they can suffocate. It should be in a basket muzzle.

volcano hi your saying that as a wind up yer!! So some idiot like me reply’s to your message... has to be. If your not, but I believe you are winding people up by the way..but just in case.. your dog is not getting from raw meat. That’s not enough water, no where near enough. GSD ALL need between 1.5- 2.5 litres a day. My dog is 45 kilos and drinks 2-3 litres a day, more in the summer months. Seriously if your dog is not drinking more than half a litre a day, you need to visit the vets for a check up. There are dogs that are not a fan of water, if you colour the water with a drop of milk sometimes that encourages a dog to drink the water.

Thats what the owner came in with he didnt put it on. I understand why he didnt change it out for a basket

99% of dog bites are fear based aggression. Maybe I’m throwing in some hyperbole. Old school protection training would utilize this response ( fear aggression) to induce a reaction and reward that reaction with a response

This is my dog he does not go after people or dogs if I’m walking him on his leash as long as no one approaches me and a dog doesn’t run up to him but we can’t have anyone come over he tries to attack anyone coming in the house 🙁 he’s been through training twice as a pup and he even used to go to doggy day care now I can’t even take him to a dog park because he doesn’t like puppies or anyone running

I’m curious as to why this woman felt a German Shepard was a good breed for herself. I’m athletic and have dog experience, but I don’t feel like I could handle that dog’s strength.

The dog clearly shuts down due to the yanking on the prong. A head collar could give security to the owner without causing anxiety and pain. There is way too much continuous pressure to the dogs neck and prong is really painful.
@laurapohjola4276
@laurapohjola4276 6 лет назад
the owner even uses the prong before and during a command. "prong tightening -> sit"

laura pohjola I have a large German Shepherd. A prong collar is a must or else they will take YOU on a walk. It doesn't hurt them...it's corrective action.

laura Pohjola, Tell me about it. That trainer should know better. Get that dam prong collar off him. And lady you need to get a toy poodle. The German Shepherd is to large and strong for you. He will take you skiing one day, if he hasn't already done so.

Sometimes we have to face we can't just have any dog we want. If they need work, long walks etc and we are not very mobile we need to not get the dog in he first place.
