This is great. Started doing this with my Czech wolf dog who has always been timid, ever since he was a puppy and just started to get slightly lead aggressive with other dogs and this seems to be doing the trick. I found the e collar in this situation only added to the fear and added a negative to what he was perceiving as a negative situation. I don’t want the e collar to sound bad as I have found it an amazing tool, when coincided with positive reinforcement. Recall never a problem now because of it and I helped a friends dog who had so many bad behaviours due to what you mentioned about “how serious the command is perceived”. Now she doesn’t chase cars, bike nor people and I have never seen a dog so happy after going through this transition. Love watching your stuff. Real life advice, for real life situations and there is always reasoning behind what you do. Cheers again for your videos.

I'm in the same boat as you. After watching several of his videos, I actually look forward to the chance to correct and "deflate the bubble" with my dog. I've been walking my dog very late at night (which is no fun if you live in a cold, winter climate) just to avoid running into people and other dogs. I've been using the "pop" leash corrections for squirrels and other critters, as well as keeping my shoulders straight and head forward while we're walking. He's already performing a natural heel and I never "trained" him to do that. It makes me optimistic about his insecurities with other dogs and people. Good luck to you!

Hey Thomas, awesome video. My dog is the same, very reactive to other dogs and sometimes people, its fake aggression out of fear. I applied what you are doing above and it works wonders. HOWEVER, only if the other dog is standing still. When I am on a walk usually dogs and dog owners are moving towards or away from me. What do I do when they are approaching me and my dog? It is hard to distract or have the dog mentally with me when the other dog is approaching. Any suggestions?

I wish I could have seen the dog before the training to see her reactivity because I want to understand if my dog is scared or aggressive, with the sounds he makes it is hard to tell. I will try this technique and have in the past but he sees the dog and zeros in on it immediately, he would be pulling to see the other dog if we turn around and go the other way. I will try to repeat this method and see how many turn-around-and-back's we need to do

Gone thru 4 trainers in my area and learned more from your vids than I did with them. Have a GS and was told I wasn't dominant enough to teach her by one trainer,the other told me she wasn't smart enough to learn. Took training in my own hands by looking online. Have this very issue. Had to separate my Eskie from her because the GS went after her. Was told to put the GS down. Sure wish I had someone in my area like you. So far I'm doing the best I can do on my own.Tks for the vids. I think it's going to be a big help.

Thank you so much for these videos. I'll be starting the flat tyre method immediately with my 1.5yo GSD with this same issue! I have a question though - if his balloon inflates so rapidly he immediately jumps in the red zone what do you do to circumvent that? Start from further away, or just call him away and repeat until he doesn't "pop" the balloon so easily?

My dog jumps up on to her hind legs when she see a squirrel or another dog on our walks. She barks very loud, but it isn't aggressive. I have never heard her growl even. If she's jumping up and bashes into me she tends to lean into me even more, as though she's trying to feel safe by being right on my body. Anyway, will a prong collar prevent her from jumping up high (she leaves the ground and spins her body when she's really worked up). Other than seeing other dogs, she is great on the leash, walks in a heel, doesn't sniff the ground (until I say go pee) and will stop when I stop. Her call back needs work, but when another dog is around she doesn't hear a single thing I say and treats don't help at all. She just gets tunnel vision.

@mrs.schmenkman
@mrs.schmenkman 5 лет назад
The number one thing that is happening, is that by walking away, it is allowing the dog to see that the other dog is not going to aggress on them. Once a dog realizes that they are not going to be jumped they slowly begin to internalize that with you they are safe. So retreating is showing them that the other dogs are cool, and even if they aren't- they can't get to her. I have foster GSD that was awful, and by using this method it's changed everything. In addition She had never been leash trained or socialized. I started with working her on leash on 2hr trail walks with my other dogs off-leash. I tried using several tools and landing on a Sporn harness. I used the very painful and long process (for ME) of using the "stop when they pull" method. It's verrrry hard and takes an incredible amount of patience and dedication. While my OTSC learned not to pull in just a few lessons using a regular collar - the GSD was so ingrained to pull it was hour upon hour of walks. Eventually walks were fine, but going into public it was like starting over. Once I got her signed up with Greater California GSD Rescue they use adoption fairs to adopt dogs, and they require Sprenger prong collars. Just to get her to the first event with the harness it took me an hour of retreating at the very instant she started reacting, then going back. We are talking 15 other dogs sitting in crates, dogs walking around the pet store etc. By the time we got inside she was fine. Wow! That retreat idea was so worth it! Switching to a PROPERLY FITTED Prong, that was properly USED, at Each event she got better. After many months she now has no dog aggression in public. I still am not ready to trust her to actually approach most of them, for more than a few seconds, but she has finally learned to sniff BUTTS not NOSES and I force her to give her butt first once in awhile. She's fine at home with my 3 dogs who are smaller and who boss her around when she gets too amped up...but when she was introduced to them it took an hour of her handler having to sit on her til she calmed down enough for my dogs to want to approach her. After that they've been together a year with no problems on her end. When left to her own devices she actually attacked a dog walking across the street last summer when I got distracted in the garage. That's why learning to RETREAT to greet is sooo important

Thank you for your videos! I have a Malinois mix that I rescued 3 years ago. He has been attacked 3 times by a GSD. He does react aggressively when on leash (so it seems to me) but I know he's not dog aggressive, as I had him at another trainer and when he's super tired, he was with 6 of her Aussies, off leash and he's fine. I will try this method but wondered if you might have other suggestions? I know I need to stay calm as well. I'm working him with a prong collar. Thank you and keep up the great work~! Wish you were here in San Diego.

Hi there! First of all your videos are great!!! I have one problem: I have a 6 months old swiss shepherd, and his first reaction on walks to other dogs are barking to scare them away.(Its because of his insecurity that I did not how to handle...) I already consulted a professional so I know the method and it's way better know, and I could socialize him well. But... from nowhere he barks again and again even when it seemed we had a great progress and the problem were gone totally. I always watch his reaction and act before he could bark on walks so it's not that i can't handle it, but why the setbacks are happening?... Is it possible that because of he is barking at dogs that walking near our fence? How should I manage this? He shouldn't guard our property at this age right? Is it only reactivity? I assume this because he doesn't bark at any people, only dogs, very viciously, and when I'm not there I cannot controll it..
@luckydogsanctuary
@luckydogsanctuary 6 лет назад
My question is similar. I have very good control over my dogs individually. When I walk them as a pack and we come across a strange dog who is "too close for comfort" there is often a chain reaction because I can't redirect all of them at the same time. Are these close calls going to perpertually set us back? If that's the case, shoot me now because there are dogs all over our neighborhood and we can't avoid them.
@knubbisligan
@knubbisligan 5 лет назад
Something wierdly attractive about you just getting that kind of control of the dog just like that, I mean it can't just be me thinking this? 😂 Anyway, loved it as usual. For me personally because I just took over a German shepherd, 10 years old, because the owners got sick.. a lot to handle because he has never ever been trained properly to go in a leash.. or anything at all for that matter.. but he's amazing, I love him, I tried some of the things you teach and I feel like im really getting a better bond with him now, so thank you for posting this kind of educational videos for us :)

Colton X Bryan good question, the prong could work yes. The prong is mimicry of teeth, so you can layer it in around 5/6 months. However you may want to start off with a slip collar to start!

I have a 19mo old GSD who has been in training since he was 10 weeks old as a Service Dog (mobility). When he was 11 mos old he pulled me out of my chair chasing a dog doing a recall. The trainer felt it was a puppy chase/play maneuver, but it has become dog reactivity/aggression in the past few months. I've pulled him from SD class and meet weekly with a trainer trying to address this behavior, but frankly I'm about to wash him. His tasks are great, but I've lost a lot of trust due to his behavior. I'd love any suggestions you might have.

Cathy MacRae but before that, when he decided to break his position did you correct him for getting out of position?
@cathymacrae8010
@cathymacrae8010 5 лет назад
@@tomdavisofficial It happened so fast--he was laying beside me, then gone. I called his name, then 'come', and he did. I placed him back on a 'down' and he was fine after that. That's his m.o. He will randomly pick a dog to react to, and might bark first. If so, I tell him to 'leave it', we walk away, then come back. He has lunged three times at another dog--each of those were instances where my focus was not on him. I typically use a martingale collar (part chain/part web), or a gentle leader, and a prong collar recently. He powers through it. Yes, I do correct him when he moves out of position.
