Sleeping all day and only getting active at night, the Mojave Desert's Kangaroo Rat is an intriguing little mammal. David Attenborough entertainingly fails to entice him out of his burrow but when a snake comes to pay a visit, our little rodent gets a bit aggressive. Entertaining clip from BBC's Life of Mammals. No, the director got impatient and insisted David Attenborough maim the kangaroo rat with red hot pincers in order to get its attention, while probably hoping the kangaroo rat put on more of a show. All to tell a half-witted story the director scrawled onto a fragment of yellowed parchment with his dick that very morning about a kangaroo rat and his quest to locate the individual who left him those nuts so he could return the favor.

I happen to have a Kangaroo Rat in my backyard and I really need to setup my camera to get some video. I have a 15 gallon birdbath/fountain and I put out a variety of birdseed under a tree that's located near it. I never get to bed before 4AM so around 2 or 3, I set out the seed for the birds that come in the early morning. Recently, I saw one of my 3 cats, (that are strictly indoor cats), with its face pressed against the sliding backdoor glass. The vertical shades are held open by her body so I got down low and came up behind her to see what she was watching. The Kangaroo Rat spotted me and did two very fast but graceful leaps and vanished under the fence. I knew right away that it was a Kangaroo Rat by the locomotion and long tail with the furry tip that traced its retreat like a ribbon. I was surprised to see it because I live in NW Houston and this area just doesn't seem conducive to the environment of this animal. I believe that it was likely a pet and someone either lost it or released it out here. Either way, I need to set my camera up to film it but as an amateur photographer, I have professional equipment that is expensive. Leaving my camera and an appropriate lens, set on a tripod ((a total of about $8K), for an X-number of hours would be risky and I don't know if I could relax until I got the camera back inside. I don't know why, but Attenborough has a voice and timing that seems to make anything interesting enough to watch! I have a great interest in wildlife and particularly in snakes, (for the last 57 years, in fact), so I don't tend to get sleepy in this kind of documentary. However, when Attenborough does a show on something like '15th century Europe and its rise & fall', (or subjects of that kind), I find myself watching at least a few minutes of it before changing the channel. If it was any other narrator, I wouldn't be on the channel long enough for the picture to appear on the entire TV screen before I changed it, LOL. FWIW
