I had 2 ponds in my back yard where beavers lived. When they dammed up the stream to create new ones, they would dig mud out of the hillside with their hands, pack it on to their flat tails, and transport it like they were pulling a trailer. It was the coolest thing to watch!

And as an added bonus, if and when the beavers move out and the dam deteriorates, the dried up pond bed will be covered with rich silt that has settled out of the water, a perfect spot for a new meadow to grow.
@hoilst265
@hoilst265 4 месяца назад
Yeah, when they reintroduced to a bunch of places where they'd been extirpated, the whole ecosystem flourished. Same thing when they reintroduced wolves to Yosemite - they thought the wolves would kill everything. Instead, they weeded out weak deer, prevented herds from growing too large and starving themselves to death, and the culling of those herds meant saplings weren't getting decimated, increasing forest cover, and reinforced riverbanks making for healthier flows. There were increased birds, increased small mammals, which increased birds of prey, more seeds got distributed. Everyone thought that these were destructive animals, but turns out they have a purpose, like the beaver.

I've only seen a singular beaver in the wild, watching it swim briefly and chew on trees in it's natural habitat. Sadly it either moved on or was hunted to get rid of it's "threat" to the local trees. In the short time I was allowed to witness it and it's habits, I was and still am extremely grateful. They may seem like big water rats but they are seriously beautiful and complex animals.

the fact that they can build dams with nearly perfect thickness and height, store food below the water for winter, and even charge rent to other species by way of fresh bedding and even disposing old bedding, makes beavers unnaturally skilled animals, its already well established that animals are smart, but few animals are capable of engineering in a large scale, preservation of specific food, and the economics of winter seasons, that kind of skill beats even some working class humans today. (you wonder why i included preservation of food? because beavers know to preserve green wood instead of dried wood, dried wood will rot in the winter if submerged for long periods, whereas green wood remains soft and supple during this time, this also prevents parasites from leeching into the wood and allows the beavers to access their storage even in the harshest of winters.)

Beavers are awesome. Beavers are the second largest rodents in the world after capybaras. Beavers are also known for the cool dams and lodges they create out of trees they chew down and mud and twigs and sticks. Beavers can also create ponds using their dams that other animals like river otters, frogs, toads, geese, swans, large-mouth bass, sunfish and moose and deer plus wolves can live in and near.
