Agile Project Management for Business Analysts // Agile projects are really popular in the software development space, but there are so many other places where an agile approach can be useful. Since this channel is all about analytics skills and careers, let’s look at agile project management for business analysts. We’ll start out more theoretical and then talk more specifically.
The way I’ve described working as an analyst in the past usually sounds more like waterfall project management for business analysts. With the more traditional waterfall approach, you define your goal and timeline and then fill in all the details before you start. You ID milestones, what work will take place, who will be involved, etc. This is a bit of a simple view to make explaining it clearer.
Agile project management for business analysts looks different. You may still set an end goal - the problem you’re trying to solve - but your method of getting there focuses more on iterating vs doing everything and delivering a big-bang end result. Like waterfall, you have goals you’re trying to accomplish, a timeframe, and some idea of resources. Unlike a waterfall approach, agile project management ASSUMES there are going to be changes. Agile focuses on many small deliveries giving the user the opportunity to test, provide feedback, and then for development to be adjusted along the way.
