Most hula dancers start really young and learn basic dances and as they grow up they learn more advance things but some people in their teen years and up can start learning and be really good dancers! all depends on how much you put in. Usually practice for Merrie Monarch starts monthssss before my halau usually starts in like November December but we dont really get into it until January. After the competition we take a small 1-2 month break and start normal hula practice again for peformances and stuff.

Now is Merrie Monarch every year, I was listening on the video, the competition started back up cause of the pandemic. I figure like in sports, kids start young, start honing on their skills growing up so they can be selected into professional players
