MORE HELP for Recovery from PANIC ATTACKS Here

Whether you are working on agoraphobia or panic or ocd or social anxiety, progress isn’t always linear. Sarah would have occasional bad days where her anxiety and panic returned. It was frustrating, but she reminded herself that this was part of the process, and that the journey to recovery is not a straight line.
Joseph Le Doux, a neuroscientist and author of Anxious, using the brain to understand and treat fear and anxiety, describes these occasional challenging exposures when panic occurs as experiences that strengthen the learning process.
You are creating new neuropathways that override the old fearful neuro network in your brain. And sometimes the brain just jumps on the wrong pathway and onto the old fearful network. It doesn’t mean that you have lost ground, it just happens on occasion. Occasionally having a panic attack during an exposure has been shown to increase the overall effectiveness and gives you opportunities to learn that you can tolerate and cope with these situations.
Ultimately, I encourage you to challenge yourself at all levels of difficulty in your exposures. If you are just starting out, I suggest beginning with easier exposures that you know you can complete.
But, as you get going and commit to doing exposure work, I recommend daily practice in as many different scenarios and situations as you can create and at all different levels of difficulty.
The takeaway from Sarah's story is that progress is not linear, and that's okay. It takes time, patience, and consistent practice to make progress in overcoming these conditions. If you're struggling with agoraphobia or an anxiety disorder or OCD, keep pushing yourself, and know that occasional setbacks are a normal part of the process.

It's really annoying how our brains generalize its triggers, but doesn't do the same when it comes to healing and coping. 😅 Thank you again for your much needed tips 🙏

Yes, I agree. It is very annoying. But, we can compensate for that by using some tricks to keep mixing things up keep our brains learning. 😊

It is tough if you have taken a break from exposures for awhile. Do what you can to begin again. Set a doable goal so that you can say you did it. Perhaps you can even reward yourself afterwards.

I just think that social media has created groups of agoraphobics where not leaving home is supported and so I don't go near those sorts of groups anymore

I do get to the store but I'm very shakey and nervous feeling and tense but the next day I feel really sore and depresonlized or things just don't feel real to me????? Is this because my body is already hypersensitive because my anxiety is so bad I have no more room for any stress??? Don't know what to do!@
@PaigePradkoTherapy
@PaigePradkoTherapy Год назад
Hi Tracy. You can begin to work on desensitizing your reactions by practicing interoceptive exercises at home and reducing those symptoms before doing those exposures at the store. I include how to do interoceptive sensitivity reduction exercises in my panic course www.paigepradko.com/panic.

I've had some minor successes with exposure therapy but it requires a lot effort and is really uncomfortable. I run out of motivation and energy quickly, which is where I keep getting stuck.
@PaigePradkoTherapy
@PaigePradkoTherapy Год назад
Hi Nicholas. Yes, exposures can be exhausting. I wonder if you can mix up your exposures. Create some exposures that are easier and not as exhausting, and then vary your exposures so that you can build up your confidence. You do not have to be completely stressed to gain benefit. If you are white knuckling it through your exposures, your exposures are too challenging and you will need to back them down until you can move through an exposure with purpose but not white knuckling it. I cover how to begin in my panic course if you are interested. www.paigepradko.com/panic

I finally got a doctor's appointment today and I told them I'm terrified of needles and they were drawing blood and I said Im going to pass out and I woke up on the floor and I had a big scrape on my arm and the boss walked in and they all banded together and lied and said that the scrap was already there. Then they said I was lying and they sent me home with nothing and said come back in few months. I also hurt my neck when I passed out. This just happened an hour ago. I'm tired of being treated like I'm nothing. Worse than a dog. Come Lord Jesus.
@PaigePradkoTherapy
@PaigePradkoTherapy Год назад
Oh my gosh, I am so sorry that happened to you. That’s terrible. There is no excuse for being treated like that. Many people have those fears and that reaction with needles and blood draws. They should have taken better care of you. 😥

I have severe agoraphobia and have been housebound for 2 and a half years. Mine started due to severe dissociation every time I would leave my house. Do exposures still work while I'm extremely dissociated? I still feel anxiety when I'm dissociated but I also feel like nothing is real, so I'm not sure if my brain can form new pathways while in that dissociated state. Thank you so much, Paige!

Hi Lilli. That’s a great question and a common experience. I recommend beginning interoceptive exposure training in your safe areas like your house before doing those activity exposures. I have an online course that teaches you how to do those exposures and then how to begin those situational or activity exposures. Here is a link if you are interested in how to treat those dissociative symptoms: www.paigepradko.com/panic

Hello Dr. Pradko, I wanted to let you know that your videos have helped me and are a true blessing! Thank you! I have a question, is it possible to overcome agoraphobia, anxiety and panic disorder without medication? I have tried some medications but the side affects were horrible. It actually scared me into wanting to keep trying medications. Is it possible to overcome this without medication? Or is medication necessary?

Hi Keilly. I left you a message on a different video. But, it is a great question and the answer is YES! It is absolutely possible to recover without medication. 😊

Watch this channel's videos, she offers some great tips to deal with Agoraphobia and panic attacks. Do your research online, too. Seek a local therapist. Stay away from aggravating factors like alcohol and caffeine. Understand that panic will not harm you, the less you resist it, the better. Accept your symptoms and be kind to yourself.

Recovery is a process of retraining the brain through experiences. We call those experiences exposures. If you need help, I have some resources for treatment at paigepradko.com.

I seen in a previous video you said you cannot retrain your brain with exposure therapy while being on an ssri, I find this statement inaccurate , misleading and potentially dangerous.
@PaigePradkoTherapy
@PaigePradkoTherapy Год назад
I do not believe I ever said that about ssri’s. There are studies that show that benzodiazepines affect your ability to learn and consolidate new information.
