As a hardcore ERRA fan, obviously biased, but a few things really stuck out as unique for them. The song was def instrumentally driven imo so I think JT’s harsh vocals not having a ton of range fit fine here. Him joining Jesse in the chorus with some clean ish stuff is not something I’ve heard before and that stuck out. The slow down before the pre-breakdown part at the end was a new flavor of ambience from them that I thought was refreshing and well executed. Loved the little triplet section as well before the slow down. Overall this had everything I could have ever wanted and more. But music is all preference man, nice review.
I noticed JT's cleans after when I heard the song again! But so glad he's bringing some cleans, definitely was missing them after hearing some in Texas In July
JT doesn’t have the range Garrison had but he’s one of the best live vocalist I’ve seen. He sound exactly the same, his breathing technique is out of this world. He compensate for the lack of range with the perfect delivery. My favorite by them is Augment and I’ve been following them since the Myspace “era”, no pun intended. They were just starting and Garrison was one of the main reason I started screaming myself. But I still really enjoy Erra, they’re catchy as hell and they’re one of the rare band I can still listen to daily without getting bored too quickly.
I've never been into erra that much either, I always felt like they were missing something. I do like this song tho ! I don't think it's anything amazing but a good song to say the least. I've also saw even live before.
I personally am a big Erra fan but this song was only running at about 80% when I first heard it. Now after like the 5th listen I can appreciate all the parts and aspectsof this song and that's what I love about this genre. The more listens the better a track gets! I'm probably in the minority but I think frostbite and dreamwalkers are a bangers by them for sure! Keep rocking yo
I love Erra personally but I could understand why you feel the way you do. If you listen to this band with eyes closed and take your attention off vocals, you'll see where they really hit hard. Their instrumentation is other worldly, IMO. The way their music ebbs and flows can invoke a range of emotions and feelings. Dementia is hands down their best song to me. I love this song as well but can totally understand your take on this. Keep reacting, love this channel! 🤘
@@TundraCH Agreed 100%. Many bands have vocals at the forefront with instrumentation as a supplement. I feel it's the exact opposite with Erra. Vocals take the back seat with these guys.
@@ec-fah-q-classof76 It's just that JT doesn't fit his vocals with this band. He's much better in TIJ. I love Garrison though that I think he really fit the unclean vocals in erra
Impulse is my favorite Erra album but it's all good. I feel like Bro wouldn't like Impulse because of the production quality so Birb would love it. The song Pattern Interupt is a favorite of mine.
Check out their album "Impulse" A friend sent me their link for newest single at that time. I threw it on, turned it off after about a minute of my buddy and I listening. Saying something like. "poor mans born of osiris" Fast forward, I end up getting an offer to do FOH for Your Memorial on a short US run. The lineup. Your Memorial, For All I Am, Erra, With Life In Mind I ate my words that tour, Ended up offering to mix them for the tour, for nothing. Was also fortunate enough do another run down the road. I love these guys as people and as a band. They are my boys! To see their gradual change, all be it from maturing, member changes, whatever. They have continued to be ERRA. They have a sound, you might like it, you might not. In response to "this not doing it for you" - Whatever man, who cares. You gave it a chance, in it's entirety. I find that a lot of people that don't enjoy them, it is because they already listen to something that better suits their 'sound'. **By their I am referring to the listener So they aren't filling a void for them. I feel like that is what initially kept me from getting into them. Then I listened to the entire first record and realized that they were doing this the right way, since day one. And now that you are coming into them now... I feel like you have created an expectation for them.
Try Erra - Rebirth, I know for a fact you will like it. Not to be one of those guys but Augment was a lot more rhythm based which I think it's what you like. I know you say the riffage doesn't quite click which I agree Erra's tempo changing has gotten a lot more aggressive. I just love Jesse, everything he touches is amazing Erra, Ghost Atlas
Erra fans are weird. Myself included. However, the “Augment-only” Erra fans get on my nerves because it’s literally and strictly based on a need for Garrison. Multiple facts need to be stated. The reality is that Augment, musically-wise, is *still* in the roots and background of Erra’s releases even after Augment. The breakdowns of Erra have a consistent theme from Augment even with the change to 7 string guitars. The melodic guitar parts progressively grew and evolved, sure. However, post-Augment Erra still has shared and common themes with Augment. I really don’t get the discontentment of post-Augment Erra in this sense. At live shows when Erra play Augment songs, i feel a disdain for them since it is old and unknown. This is my personal experience in Southern California shows. I still appreciate those songs live since i’ve been a fan since Impulse but! this could be universal. Idk. hypothetically, if JT and Erra did an Augment 2.0 album, those original Augment-only fans would probably [or would definitely] hate it because of JT. So dumb. 🤦🏻♂️ For me Drift was a no skip, Neon had 2 skips for me (monolith and hyperreality), and I became obsessed with Eye of God since Jesse stated that it is their signature sound. Then Snowblood released and I literally listened to it 5 times in a row analyzing it and came to the conclusion that this will be the best album Erra will release, production-wise and musically-wise. I have optimism that JT will be diverse with his vocal talents. All this to say that I respect your stance since you are coming to Erra in a later timeline. I’ve been a fan since Impulse but am obsessed with the Drift-Neon Erra era (lol) and I would be interested on your stance after this album releases! Also, i love the recommendation i read here of closing your eyes ignoring the vocals and paying attention to the instruments only to get you to be an actual fan of Erra!
Honestly the solo on Hybrid Earth is what sold me on the band a long time ago and this song has quite a similar solo that is just as technical, I am surprised that Birb still has trouble enjoying them but oh well
This is a banger comment, I am a Drift/Neon fan myself, and actually I prefer JT over Garrison. Dementia was really the only song I got into from the previous times (for obvious reasons) Eye of God is very good and this new song is out of this world incredible and I too believe we are on the cusp of hearing the absolute best work Erra has ever put out, I have very high hopes for the upcoming album
This band has always been polarizing for me. I LOVED all their early stuff (Andromeda, Impulse, Augment), but haven't really gotten into the newer releases as much. I think the departures of the original vocalist and rhythm guitarist (Garrison and Alan) really made them change their sound. Garrison had such a unique style and wide range of vocal techniques, and Alan's melodic riffs (he is heavily influenced by Misery Signals) were a FANTASTIC complement to Jesse's technical/solo skills. Even Ian's (who was only on the Moments of Clarity EP) vocals were still good enough for me to really enjoy the band. While I liked JT in TIJ, his vocals in ERRA just don't really do it for me; your assessment of "monotone" is very accurate IMO. And while Jesse still kills it with the shreddiness and cleans, there aren't as many inspiring riffs or "groovy" parts like in the older EPs/albums. I guess I'm just the stereotypical "old" ERRA fan that METALBRO was referring to here, but I just feel that it's the absolute truth! I WANT to like the newer stuff more, but it just doesn't have that same "it" factor that the older songs had for me. That being said, this is one of my favorite "newer" ERRA songs after just one listen! I'm hoping it's a sign that I'll be able to really get into this new album!
agree with everything you said and I feel the same way! Impulse/Augment are two of my favorite albums ever so it’s tough to get into their new sound honestly. Along with everything you said, the lack of the melodic guitars really makes these newer songs waaay less emotional for me. Tracks like Spirits Away, Heart, etc.. could be me to tears at times and these newer tracks don’t even come close unfortunately
I've just wrote a comment before looking at the comment section and we share the same views man! I agree with everything 1000%. I wonder where Garrison and Alan are now :'(
The more you listen to this song the more it grows on you... That’s what I’ve found with this band... You can miss a lot until you dive deep into their music!! 🤘
The initial listen of this song when it came out, it didn't catch me. And I loooove Erra. However this video being my second listen, I enjoyed it a lot more. This was a little different, but imo they've done better. It was very ERRA though, with the technical and fancy guitar work that Jesse does. Regarding J.T., I really love his vocals. They're so identifiable to me (I noticed his vocals instantly in a Dayseeker song), and I just really enjoy how his sound.
I'm not gona lie, going into this I was not in the mood for Metalcore and I was feeling burnt out abit. But this Song really resonated with me! Those fast Harmonics sound so good and I love the proggy Elements. Even if it follows the same Troupe: harsh, cleans, harsh... This Song was above average for me and I felt the passion behind it. So yea going on my Playlist and this is coming from an someone who doesn't know Erra...
I've gone through stages of listening to tons of Erra to not really listening to them much, but this single definitely has me listening to them again. Also, I agree that JT's vocals can be monotone sometimes especially in comparison to him in TIJ, but I do like the power and clarity of his vocals.
After this song and eye of god they are at my top list for sure. oh and i read someone in the comments saying that their songs sounds the same. Ultraviolet, Breach, White noise, Spirits Away, Skyline, Dreamcatcher just to name a few. Probably the last album wasn't as high as they used to get in terms of quality music but they said that neon was a simpler album than their previous works. Their production its top notch almost in every album. Nice video.
I felt the same way about the song feeling very typical ERRA, but as I’ve continued to spin it because it is definitely good, it has grown on me hard and become one of my favorite tracks of theirs
Best ERRA song since their 1st album. I'm a fan of ERRA when they started, since then i could not enjoy it. But this is a return to form. Jesse is a monotonous clean vox so if they did a greatest hits album you wouldn't really know what was their 1st song or recent song haha. I've seen them live and I couldn't distinguish one song from the next so the repetitiveness is definitely there. Obscure words and Vaalbara are my 2 fave songs by them. Metalbirb im the same bro I just cant enjoy architects or polaris etc so we all have our bands we like
I'm right there with you Metalbirb. I couldn't explain why either, but Erra has never really resonated with me DESPITE the fact I can objectively admit that it's a good band. I think it all comes down to that gut feeling that anybody can have. Like how I could bow down and worship Edge of the Earth by Volumes, but you didn't seem to enjoy it as much, or hold it in such high regards. Everyone has this 👍
The issue with erra is that most of their songs basically sound the same. Like I feel like they've reused this chorus from like a dozen of their older songs lol. I love the band, but they definitely don't experiment with their sound. I feel like if you've listened to one of their songs you listened to them all.
Can’t believe people are bitching about JTs vocals. He’s a fucking beast, idk what some people are hearing. Maybe this isn’t his most impressive showing but he’s a monster none the less.
One of the reasons I keep coming back to your channel Metalbirb is because I know the things you say about the songs are your actual genuine thoughts and it never seems like you're going overboard on the reactions or pandering to the band. These videos always seem super genuine to me and that's what I feel a lot of reaction channels kind of lack. I'd much rather hear you say you're not the biggest fan of a track rather than lie and say it was so good and you enjoyed it so much if you really didn't. Anyways that's just a long way for me to say that I love you videos bro!
Nah, I really agree with Metalbirb here - I really like ERRA, they tick all the boxes for me - but for me to keep listening to them I really need something to draw me into it. So many bands are doing cool shit right now, and ERRA just doesn't catch my attention like it used to. I also think that the vocals in this band just aren't good enough to keep up in the genre - Jesse has good cleans but it's nothing groundbreaking, and there's just something about JTs vocals in ERRA that just hit so flat. I liked that JT was clearly singing a bit here, and hopefully that can result in some cool shit. I really think it needs to be the vocals that step up to take ERRA to the next level, in some way. But they're in desperate need of some kind of innovation beyond 'cool new guitar sounds'. And I say that as a huge guitar nerd - I would generally love that kind of thing, but it just feels like the only fresh air that ERRA has been offering for a while.
As a huge erra fan, I loved it. Fair points tho I'm hoping for a little more from the record but they usually never fail. Would love to see a reaction to the record when it drops❤
Gotta say I'm not an Erra fan, I don't think they suck or anything like that, but this song just had me feeling like they're just another djenty metalcore band. I dug the solo and it is a high energy song which I like, but the whole time I was listening to the song I couldn't help but think if you threw this song into a playlist of other djenty metalcore bands, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference. But despite my less than optimistic view of this song I will definitely check out the album whenever we get that, I'm open to see what else they can bring to the table.
Loved Eye of God, this song I really liked but it didn’t totally blow me away. I really loved Drift however since it I’ve been slightly disappointed, but I’m hoping this new album is a banger. These singles give me hope it’s going to be!
As a big fan of ERRA since Drift backwards, I was somewhat satisfied and somewhat let down by this song, I think the moments are catchy and the breakdown and solo where good, but kind of like Neon it felt a bit formulaic to me (thankfully a better production than Neon), the reason why I don't include Drift in this is because it felt like they where truly impassioned during that album, but their newer stuff doesn't give me the same feeling, it's still a good song I would give it about a 7/10, but ERRA can do better in my opinion
I really liked the past two erra tracks, but i 100% agree with metalbirb about the vocals. I never listened to TiJ, but in erra his vocals are very monotone, and that was one of the things that really made Neon not grab me. There are for sure plenty of moments in there that I like, but as a whole they don’t grab me like Periphery or other bands like that do. But they do seem to be progressing more towards something i like. Eye of God is still my fav by them so far, tho.
If you want to get into these guys, their stuff with their original frontman Garrison Lee is genuinely fantastic. Impulse and Augment are honestly must listens in my opinion. To be honest, I've kind of soured on them slightly due to not seeing the appeal with JT's vocals (he's not bad, but his lack of range in comparison to Garrison really throws me out of the mood for this music. I like the song). Isolation Blue off of their Andromeda EP is also a banger.
I can't remember listening to Erra before, I liked the track! It started off giving me familiar metalcore vibes slightly above average but not amazing, it's the proggy vibe that they bring in which keeps things interesting and not feeling like it's the same as so many other metalcore tracks so this seems to be a very decent introduction to what this band do, maybe that's your issue metalbirb you're wanting a bit more than some proggy-ness to set this band apart.
I surprisingly really enjoyed this, now with that being said I didn't not enjoy the cleans whatsoever but the harsh vocals and instrumental was pretty sick!
Mad respect for you always sticking to your honest opinions even if they're not the popular one. I can definitely agree erra has a signature sound and if you're not into it you probably won't be in love with anything they drop.
I don't know what it is about ERRA either, maybe it's that they're too shreddy? I actually enjoyed this song a good bit, but there were still a lot of forgettable parts to it. And not to be one of those prototypical metalcore elitist douchebags but I do also find Impulse and Augment to be their best work. Still loved a lot of their stuff from Moments of Clarity and Drift but fell out of interest with Neon. Personally I feel like a band like ABR is one of few bands that has been able to consistently make albums that sound very similar but that are still "good" or "interesting". I don't know man, it's all subjective and preference and I want to enjoy these guys so much because who doesn't love great music but something about their writing just doesn't click for me either! Like they clearly have all the talent, they're just not putting it together for me. Looking forward to hearing this new album though.
Agree that this song is lacking, I much MUCH preferred Eye of God as it was a bit more of a throwback to the Impulse/Augment days which many believe to be their peak. Vocals are fine and JT has improved over the years but Ive always felt the loss of Alan hurt Erra the most. They’ve not been the same since.
I've never been into erra that much either, I always felt like they were missing something. I do like this song tho ! I don't think it's anything amazing but a good song to say the least. I've also saw even live before.
I agree with you. I’m not an Erra fan but I like some of their songs, and this one doesn’t bring anything new. It’s generic Erra. It’s just a supposition but I think they probably wrote this one this past year (or maybe a year before haha) and they wanted to release it before releasing new content. Anyway, nice song and nice reaction. 🔥 🤘🏻
I am with Metalbirb. JT has always felt like he could increase his range in Erra and Texas in July did give me that expectation as well. Honestly I havent liked a lot of erra stuff since JT came on, but his singing was cool.
I agree that JT’s vocals doesn’t seem to bring “enough” or add any depth. I have no complaints from Jesse of course but it would be nice to add some more vocal depth and flavor to an already brilliant band. This song I can say has been composed really well. Jesse adds those dissonance runs and harmonics with his guitar and Jesse’s high melodic clean vocals really sells me the most from ERRA. A great example is Spencer from Periphery. Spencer can do it all vocally and could sell almost any band. I could hear JT adding some clean vocals himself, but I think the overall challenge to step up ERRA is to add someone who can sing just as well as they growl or scream. More dynamic at least
It’s a great band I like songs like skyline from them a little more, but none the less the djent is real, the guitar solo was dope, and those double kicks into that breakdown were awesome and as was the breakdown!
Impulse and augment are 2 of my favorite albums of all time, but their new music in my personal opinion is all the same with little to no change. Not a bad song but I feel like I've already heard it already
I agree with Metalbirb. These guys are a great band - instruments are awesome, the vocals are amazing, the songs are well-written, and I've seen them live twice and they kill it live... But I never really come back to them. I don't know what it is.
Because they are not iconic band. It doesn't matter how complicated the riffs and everything as long as it's not memorable or timeless, it will be forgotten for years. Only I came back listening to them probably the Augment and Impulse and that's it.
@@fredrickbalois It's just not my cup of tea. I do have one friend who is the most die-hard Erra fan I've ever met. I think that's a little harsh to say they're not iconic. They've definitely grinded for years and made a name for themselves. Sidenote: I love JT. I think he's one of the sickest vocalists out there. But I prefer TIJ. Erra is still a sick band, just not my thing.
@@alecdawg11 I underestimated JT for being monotonous, but when I heard the false divinity by TIJ which recently released, it sounds different. I am only a fan of erra because of two first albums. Their self titled sounds promising as I listened to the whole album, yet still not on par for what I heard on two first album. Metalbirb already explained why he preferred ERRA nowadays on his Patreon compare to early ERRA because I know he is fan of modern metal and I don't agreed for what he said, thinking he disagreed this snow blood then suddenly he liked the whole album. Ps. Not really a fan of modern metal these days with the exception of bands like Invent Animate which is better than ERRA for my opinion. Do ERRA can top the IA heavener or even their ep?
@@alecdawg11 Yes they made name for themselves, I recognize their hard work to be in the position to what they are now. But for me, if Alan and Garrison never left, they will be top the charts.Their self titled album was their real comeback and put themselves back in the game because their drift and neon album are completely messed up for me.
Been a fan of you guys for a while and knowing what your into and what you like, it makes no sense on why you don't like them. I feel like you have a grudge... you have reacted positive to so many bands that were far worse then this and threw shade to erra. I just don't get it ?!?!
Seven Sky PTH is an incredible band but another prime example of a very distinct sound that isn’t for everybody. If Mike Portnoy rates Fortress as one of his top albums ever, you know there’s something special about the band. Periphery also drawing lots of inspiration from them, Spencer in particular. But they hold a very special place for MetalBirb and I, we grew up with that band being one of our favourites (and local) and we’ve seen them almost too many times to count. Again it all comes down to taste, but you can’t deny they are a super talented group. I personally love both Erra and PTH very much 🤘🏻
I agree with metalbirb, its a good song, it has great parts, but for me they just have a formula that makes everything sound the same. It sounds gimmicky to me. Even that trem-harmonic breakdown riff is sick, but, they use that structure way too much. They should use all the talent and style they have and compose more creatively. JMO
Without Alan, there’s no soul. Without Garrison, there’s no power behind the vocals. I’ll always love Erra because even bad Erra is an 8/10 at the worst. Just have to accept that we’ll never get pre-drift Erra again.
Couldn't agree more. There was a very apparent shift after Alan and Garrison left the band after augment. Those were indeed the golden years imo. I'll always be a fan but I definitely agree with ya man.
evdboy2 makes sense, Drift to this song sound all very similar. The guitar work sound verrrrry Jesse, which isn’t a problem at all. But the Alan flavor really balanced it out and created a very unique and tasteful prog metalcore sound that Everyone knows and loves.
Big Dildus exactly! Like Yin and Yang. I’d argue Jesse and Alan were one of the best duos of all time. Alan had the emotional riffs and Jesse came in with the progressive, technical riffs. Perfection. It’s too bad they had the falling out all those years ago. Now when I listen to Alan’s band and Erra, it sounds like two separate entities that need to come back together. Alan and Jesse have made up as of a couple months ago though but I doubt with Alan’s family obligations that he’d re-join Erra full time.
Man I've been an Erra fan since 2012 and I loved Impulse and Augment, but I just haven't really gotten onboard with anything after that. And I completely agree about JT. I followed that dude when he was just doing vocal tutorials on youtube and he sounded so good in Texas in July, but I don't feel he fits Erra like Garrison did. And you can definitely notice Alan's absence since he left, the melodic riffs are just not there. This song isn't memorable to me. Ah well :'(
Erra just became really boring after Augment. And y'all can kill me for this, but I really don't like Jesse's cleans. New screamer sounds like the old one. Hybrid earth will be the best song to date by them and I will still check them out but I'm afraid nothing will stick anymore, the songs are just too forgettable and the cleans are just boring.
