When it first came out I was mesmerized and totally hooked , 'till this very day .. The music , the atmosphere and , as you say , is a cinematic masterpiece . I can see it again and again . Totally brilliant .

@@shvicat I love this film! It came out same year as Deliverance which was based on the Novel which came out in 1970. I believe Aguirre was inspired by Deliverance but it somehow upstaged the movie as it's a much more grand version of the River Adventure genre. Crazy Herzog made this much grander film for 1/6 of the Budget of Deliverance!

"The bible scene is taken directly from history. Pizzaro's cleric offered the bible to Atahuelpa who asked what it is. When told it is the word of God he held it up to his ear." That's quite a story when you think about it. The native, Amerindian spirituality had a different relationship to nature compared to Christianity. Theirs was a spirituality felt in the wind, elements of the sky like the heavenly fog that clung to the steep Andean mountains, the flowing spirit of the waters that could be as sacred as the river Ganges. They talk about feeling and being filled with the spirit of God in Christianity but so many of those phrases are empty phrases, at least to me, but when you are closer to nature you fell it and sense it even as you approach the flowing waters. Your "hear" the spirit first. The same way you don't SEE God - ever - but if you stop and LISTEN, you can hear his word in nature. You even FEEL its presence in the coolness in the air. That coolness provides relief and refreshes the spirit. What starts as a whisper of the spirit keeps increasing until that moment when you are the divine roar of the power of God. The moment when you actually see the waters of the river you are WITNESSING the divine spirit at work, The waters that hit the rocks joyfully bound over them and blissfully rejoins the other waters on a espiritual journey to be reunited with a vast bountiful ocean. There's not "Lake of Fire" the way Christianity teaches us is the fate the damned and even those who "refuse" to accept the written word of God. This is how many people who didn't have books and couldn't read experience the Creator in a profoundly different way than in Christianity. The Indian was trying to use his highly sensitized and well developed sense of hearing that was attuned to listening to God. To the Christian way of experiencing he was literally using the wrong and incorrect sense. Did Christians SEEM to be tone deaf to the spirit of God when the Amerindians first encountered them. You even experience it in a different part of your brain. The WRITTEN word of God - I think you hear the word "logos" sometimes in Christianity is a more CEREBRAL kind of Creator. Cerebral but also kind of RIGID in emphasis on its unbending and absolute divine law. Just putting it in terms of God's word AS LAW, continually driving home that point. "Nature-ally," the Indian puts the Bible close to his ear, kind of the way kids put a seashell close to their ears so they can hear and sense the spirit of God. People write a lot in discussions about God in church history talks on RU-vid, continually chiming in that Jesus is the only way. You have to accept divine law this way. The waters of the river only flow one way. If you diverge or get stranded, like the men on the raft who got caught in those inescapable whirlpools at the other side of the river, they are doomed. When they get caught that way they are already dead.

The film is very raw with the on-location filming and hard work. in the jungle.

It's a tradition all reviewers use the same pool of jokes about Christianity and when the christian fans get annoyed they think we were offended when in reality we just want new material cause we have heard all these jokes before.

Well, the movie itself is hitting at christianity, what does one expect. And rightfully so, as christianity to this day kinda ignores christ for the most part ... just look at USA...full of christians, full of gun and Trump lovin evangelical hypocrites ...
