Lauri Volpi altro squillo brioso. Specie Lauri Volpi. Ovviamente a mio giudizio.
Fra quegli estremi aneliti la morte a me parrà, parrà. E solo in ciel precederti la morte a me parrà! la morte a me, a me parrà e solo in ciel e solo in ciel precederti la morte a me parrà, la morte a me parrà!

Yes it is a B, although that's an old tradition: Aureliano Pertile took B's in the old 78 rpm recording. Domingo was basically a big lyric tenor rather than a spinto. But he does a nice trill on Ah si ben mio.
No tenor in his sound mind would dare sign a high C on stage, unless he is a leggero as Juan Diego Florez. I'd say Domingo is a dramatic tenor, so much so he is now a baritone.
Jose Benigno Caceres No Domingo was never a dramatic, nor really a spinto. He's a big lyric. For a dramatic check out Francesco Merli on Donna non vidi mai. And yes plenty of dramatics could sing C's, even D's on stage!!
Jose Benigno Caceres Listen to Pedro Lavirgen, to Bonisolli. Actually, that video was suppose to be Bonisolli but in the open dress rehearsal, with audience, he refused to sing full voice and had an argument with von Karajan, and left the stage; was then when they called Placido who was in Nice, France, to replace Bonisolli. Placido was simple a full lyric, not even a big lyric, extremelly musical, and very intelligent how to use his voice. Still after many years singing thousands of performances in all tenor Fach, he still -sometimes- sounds fresh, but certainly NEVER a baritone, something, I can't understand why he is doing it, singing such roles as Rigoletto, Boccanegra and sounding like a lyric tenor.
Dear Uppity, You seem to be implying that only the people that agree with you have integrity. The BBC opinion is NOT the standard in the opera world. This Trovatore is very good and Domingo has sung over 130 different operas, more than any tenor in history. However Mr. Domingo has few signature roles. Perhaps Don Jose and Otello and I'm being generous. His quantity is a great accomplishment, but quality should also be a consideration. The BBC justified his number 1 standing for PD based mostly on quantity of roles. We were no doubt fortunate to have him, but not in the number 1 spot. Enjoy
@@sugarbist Signature roles: Cavaradossi in Tosca (performed it over 400 times --> a record), Hoffman in les contes d'hoffman, Otello, Canio (Pagliacci), Turridu (Cavalleria Rusticana), to name a few. He was also the best Verdi tenor of his generation.
@@bolleke702 Domingo performed Cavaradossi 37 times at the Met. Hoffman 32 times, Cavalleria 3, I Pagliacci 14 and Otello 40 times. For the most part, the quantity is there and some quality as well. I heard a fine Trovatore with PD in the late 1970s which was excellent as well. However placing Domingo in the number 1 spot by the BBC just doesn't sit well with me. I believe PD had a medium size spinto voice with a fine velvet quality, but the squeezing in the passaggio and higher with obvious sour high notes after the 1970s seemed to be something that stayed with him until singing a baritone repertoire. Cutting phrases and high notes short and transposing arias beyond acceptable practices was another oversight by his fans. Circa 1988 he campaigned to lower the Universal Pitch, which eventually did not happen. I saw him circa 1993 in I Pagliacci at the Met. I was very enthused about the event of seeing the world class tenor, but I unfortunately came away disappointed. Choking in the passaggio and higher made him almost inaudible at times. Omitting the 2nd B-Flat in No Pagliaccio Non Son was not a big deal, but the first B- flat in the aria was strained and not very audible. It's not just the high notes, but cutting phrases short and squeezing in the passaggio sticks in my craw. His Zarzuelas are very fine because of the lower tessitura, where his voice does not become strained. A fair to a very good or even excellent tenor is fine with me, but a great tenor in the number 1 spot? I don't think so.
@@sugarbist I was not talking about that nbr 1 spot, that is indeed subjective and debatable. And indeed, by 1993 he was already in slight vocal decline and maybe he had a bad night. If you want to judge him, judge him by his 70's, early 80's recordings. After all, you probably compare him with Corelli in his prime also. Indeed he has some flaws, but they all have flaws. (i.e. nobody is perfect) He also has a lot of qualities: very nice legato, beautiful rich timbre, full lyric quality, perfect pitch, very present and fluent low notes, very good acting skills, musicality (understanding of the role), ... Opera is a total package. For all the skills Domingo has, and his contribution to the world of Opera, one has to put him on the number one spot. (I really can't think of anyone else) If you only take out the singing however, that is maybe a different story. A lot of great singers in the past to choose from. Domingo is certainly one of them. (with his own unique qualities) But as is Gigli, Corelli, Pavarotti, Del Monaco, Di Stefano, Bjorling, Bergonzi, Caruso, ...
