AHF backsword vs sidesword

Two basket hilt weapons facing off against one another. Nick (red stripe) is using a 34" bladed English backsword. Mike is using a 36" bladed Schiavona, a typical continental basket hilt sword, both styles date to the early/mid 17th century. These vary from the sabres in recent videos in that they weigh approx 30% more and with much more substantial guards they handle a little differently, as well as offer a lot more protection.
Both fencers study a variety of historical European martial arts, though not the Italian sidesword or early English backsword traditions, they instead draw upon experience in sabre, broadsword (late 19thc era), rapier and others. Therefore this is not representative of a particular style associated with those weapons.

I wish this was the type of fencing in the olympic games.

We are a historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) school and therefore as a club we exclusively teach and train in European weapons. Many of us have done other martial arts/sports including Kendo, various unarmed EMAs etc, and we are always happy for people to bring their styles into the sparring.

Great display of both swords by the both of you. Subscribed! Unlike those other channels where the uploaders talks trash about other sword types as well as other sword techniques (mainly longsword cultists as well as Katana cultists), this channel is fairly displays meant to be watch. Thank you, keep em' coming. Especially your spear vs videos!

ImThinking3 Thanks, but please be aware that there will be no new videos posted to this channel. We have merged our two instructor channels into this one I am now posting into. At the club we teach and practice with a great range of weapons, and like to show both the strengths and weaknesses of them all in as fair and realistic a fashion as possible. Everyone has a bias as to what they most like or enjoy, but that isn't a reason to not appreciate other weapons and traditions.
@ImThinking3

Academy of Historical Fencing I agree with you on the bias. I favor any spear/bow over anything else. But I love the differences in weapons. I have already subscribed to the new channel. Thank you and keep up the awesome work!

I am going to put together a video of all the equipment we both use and recommend soon, this will help for both seeing what we use and helping people find the equipment they want.

I thoroughly enjoy these videos, thank you for uploading them. A close up of the blades would be nice so that we can see what you are working with without having to consult my books and guessing.

I'm definitely liking my Schivona. Good cutter and agile in the thrust.

Long time subscriber. I use your videos to help my own swordsmanship and I have to say, this is some of the most beautiful swordsmanship I've seen. Perhaps the weight of the blades gives the opponent more time to react, but there were so many beautiful parries and ripostes. I love the schiavona. One of my favorite swords of all time. Alas, there are so few productions available today.
@Nikos3000

Thanks, Much appreciated. The weight and rigidity of the blades do slow things down a tad, and force and/or encourage more moulinets. Still the majority of what is seen here is used when training with half weight synthetic swords of course, but the fight with these steel trainers is more cautious with much more concern for defence, simply because both fighters know a hit from those swords hurts. Schiavona is indeed a lovely sword. Both swords in this video were made by Darkwood Armoury in the US. They are a bit pricey anyway, but when combined with postage and import to the UK, even worse. We are yet to find a better model for less though.

Windlass Steelcrafts used to make them. I actually saved up for the sword, and lo and behold, once I had the money, it had been discontinued. In retrospect, the sword was not received positively by the sword community. I have a couple DSA swords. They all seem blade heavy. They appear nimble enough in this video though. Thanks again!
@Nikos3000
@Nikos3000 10 лет назад
Yeh I'd avoid Windlass swords. They never feel quite right. Blade taper is usually poor, lacking distal taper. Their blades tend to be soft and they rarely handle right. The Backsword here is 1.1kg, the Schiavona 1.2kg.

***** Ah!! I overlooked that. I guess I just saw Dark&5$* Armory and just assumed it was DSA. If I'd been reading more carefully the "here in the US" would have made me double check since DSA is based in Canada. Pretty awesome that you live around so many enthusiasts. I have to search very hard to find training companions. VERY VERY hard to find someone even half way serious about it.

A sidesword is typically double edged and can equally cut or thrust. It is usually characterized by a guard that allows the index finger to wrap the quillion (crossguard) for control. Technically a backsword is just a single edged sword, but it is usually used to mean a basket hilted single edged sword. Which the index finger cannot wrap the finger and cannot thrust with such ease and dexterity as a sidesword.
@Nikos3000
@Nikos3000 11 лет назад
at times it will as feints are made or parries. Sometimes cutting at a blade can be useful in itself, allowing safe step into distance whilst blade has momentum to carry into a second attack. But anyway you should see from the number of hits made that we aren't. There are easily 20 solid hits made in this fight, including some really substantial thrusts and head cuts.

Sounds great! I've been saving up money in order to get started with some of my friends. Do you have any recommendation for books (and websites selling said books) about medieval fencing? I don't really enjoy reading things on the internet for long periods of time so I would much rather enjoy a book. Thanks for the channel!

As I'm new to side sword myself, this was quite a fun video. Form seems good, the Falsa's are pretty nice. I Still have to learn to control my sword in such way that the faint seems authentic or that I don't plan my feint but use it only if the opponent blocks. So much things to learn But of course, sparing is a completely other ball game.

I have not seen that many leather plastrons being used. Most fencers use a SPES, PBT or Absolute force jacket by itself, or with a fencing (like Leon Paul) plastron underneath. I know some of the Polish groups use a type of cotton or leather plastron with built in neck protector, SPES sell a cotton model like this, but I do not remember who makes the leather ones.

There are many great translations of original works such as Jeffrey L. Forgeng Art of Combat (Meyer). However as a beginner, you may well be better served by starting with a modern interpretation if you cannot reach an experienced instructor. Check out Christian Tobler's books on longsword as a start, and also perhaps the agilitas longsword training dvd's.

Nikos3000, although this might be a bit off-topic, but can you please tell me where to get good leather plastrons for wear over fencing jackets/gambesons (like those used in many HEMA tournaments)? I believe them to be good protection when stabbing with Regenyei federschwerters.

Can you recommend Darkwood backswords and schiavonas? I've been meaning to buy one for some time but I'd like to know a little more about them first.
@AcademyofHistoricalFencing
@AcademyofHistoricalFencing 9 лет назад
Yes, they are very good. The shipping and import duties to those that live outside of the US make them too expensive for what they are, as they are already quite expensive. The only irritation is that all blades are threaded rather than peened, and this means they will rattle loose constantly, as well as pommels constantly spinning, and that is annoying on something like a Schiavona pommel. Overall good swords though, and excellent service.
@Nikos3000
@Nikos3000 11 лет назад
Not seen that one personally. I have mittens from them. Service was good, but I don't like the mittens much at all. Protection is great, but I really dislike the grip and feel so barely use them.

What fencing masks do you use in the AHF? Would you discourage a 350N mask for sparring with heavier weapons (longsword mostly)?
@Hesric
@Hesric 10 лет назад
I've just discovered these vids,I'm curious,not a fencer myself. Have you ever used such weapons as axes or blunt weapons? (Clubs,maces,morning stars) I've seen lots of videos about blades but not heavier weapons such as them.
@Nikos3000
@Nikos3000 10 лет назад
We've done the odd bit of experimentation, but the reality is there is no way to safely train with them in any realistic fashion, remove the mass and they are a different weapon all together. Also, we are a school that focuses on working from surviving fight/fencing manuals, which documented primarily the use of weapons people carried and used in civilian life in the 15th-17th centuries (and also military sabre of the 18/19c). So those type of weapons rarely come into it.

It seems that way, but track the movement of their swords and imagine how they would look if they were not intercepted. If they were allowed to follow through with their attacks, they would be striking their opponent's body. They are creating legitimate threats.
@MrTryAnotherOne

Why type of blades were you using? Those aren't the regular blades that were originally delivered with the swords, were they?
@AcademyofHistoricalFencing
@AcademyofHistoricalFencing 8 лет назад
+MrTryAnotherOne Yes they are both Darkwood swords with the original blades they came with from Darkwood. 36" sidesword blade on the Schiavona, and 34" backsword on the basket hilt. I am now posting from our new club channel. Please come and subscribe!

So as a guy who is interessted in swords. What is exactly the difference between those 2 swords? They look the same to me.
@Nikos3000
@Nikos3000 9 лет назад
A basket hilt can only be used with a hammer grip. Whereas a sidesword has protection further forward of the tang shoulder/quillion that allows the index finger to over that quillion, as a rapier would normally be gripped. This allowed for better thrusting and point control. Also a backsword has a single edged blade, whereas a sidesword typically is double edged.

Duksing Chau What do you mean by hammer grip? The basket is held with a hammer grip. Do you mean an open hilted cruciform hilted sword, the typical knightly sword?

the basket hilt would have the index finger over the quilon and the hammer grip wouldnt
