When jazz fans talk about the greatest pianists, Ahmad isn't mentioned nearly enough. Listen to his left hand trills. And catch Ben Webster, just hangin' out, smokin' a cig.
Your grandfather was a wonderful musician and master of taste and fine brush work! I tried copying his brush style after the "Live at the Pershing" album came out around 1958 or 1959. I spent my life as a "weekend" jazz drummer and always had a deep respect for your grandpa and the other pros. I never made it to that level, very few do. That's why we love 'em so much!
As a very young jazz fan, I luckily stood in front of the Pershibng Lounge and heard Ahmad playing Poinciana ..... 64th and Cottage Grove 1955 I think, I couldn't get in ...but heard the tune.
His subtle tones coupled with the seemingly effortless intricacy of his fingering makes for one incredible performance. I just picked up his vinyl 1960 album on Argo "Happy Moods". I can't wait to take it for a spin.
