In my opinion Mr. Jamal has has two great periods in his career: first, from the early 50's to the early 70's, with his great first trios (Ray Crawford, Israel Crosby, Vernell Fournier, Jamil Nasser, Frank Gant, etc). Most of the seventies and early eighties introduced a bit of commercialism and electronics in his music, somehow putting his pianism into shadows. He emerged mightily in the nineties, as this video clearly shows in depth, and he is playing beautifully until now, 2016, at 86!! A good example of a high profile jazzman who has not become outdated or decadent. Long Live Ahmad!!!!!
Ahmad Jamal--Piano James Johnson III--Drums James Cammack--Bass My favorite Jamal trio 2nd only to Frank Gant-Drums and Jamil Nasser-Bass -- for me....
This is a great performance. We should pause and appreciate how young James was on this tour, and being part of such a heavy trio playing largely improvised music at such a deep level. Dude was only like 22 or 23. I know because I knew him during this time- I was a young drummer just a couple years under him on the scene. He was someone I really looked up to. Such a mature and sound and unfussy vibe. We played in some of the same groups of musicians, subbing for each other all the time. He’s a good dude, and now that we are into our 40s it really amazes me how young we were playing with amazing older musicians, especially the guys like James, who have family members who are influential and important to the jazz scene and the art form itself. Peace and love to all jazz lovers and musicians ❤️
Feliz 2024, seguro que sera tan estupendo como lo sois todos los que habeis compartido en algun momento esta joya. Besos y mil gracias Esatchmo, que maravilla¡¡¡
Id be very interested to know how he came to play a Bosendorfer that night when he is a decades long Steinway guy. Steinway takes this kind of thing very seriously. I must say it would be nice to hear him more on a Bosey. The mellowness and colorful resonant bass agree with his stylistic approach. This piano got quite a workout that night!
