You should definitely do a video on Summertime Rendering! This series is so unknown and underrated! it deserves more attention. Maybe You can sell like a Murder Island Mystery, something like that

I think the approach to recommending anime to newbies is to give examples of genre for them to pick for themselves and then give follow up recommendations if it clicks. for example sports anime- Haikyuu!! if you like Haikyuu!!- Prince of Tennis, Hajime No Ippo, Slam Dunk fantasy- Ranking of Kings if you like Ranking of Kings- To Your Eternity, Berserk (97), Spice and Wolf Sci-Fi- Akira if you like Akira- No Guns Life, Cowboy Bebop, Psycho Pass and then if one or more of those click you can use them as cross examples for future recommendations. like say if someone liked Bebop and Ippo you could give Megalobox as a rec

i agree! find out what their favorite western movies and shows are and then recommend some accessible series that check the same sort of boxes. even if they don't become a full on anime nerd, it's never come across to me as wasting anyone's time with the rec.

Crust often refers to low quality. When it refers to age, it specifically refers to old video games, because it's in reference to lowpoly models, low-res textures, and compressed voice lines. It's the crunch.

I am firmly of the opinion that 'last season's anime' is the best stuff to watch because it's all done and I can watch it all when I want to, and I don't have to feel like I'm inside a specific cultural bubble of 'we have to talk about things right now,' so I'll prolly check this Summertime Renders out. **EDIT:** I did and Summer Time Rendering is now one of my favourite anime of all time, holy hell, that thing whips so much

For me, the first half of Summer Time Rendering reminded me a lot of The Promised Neverland season 1. Starts of with an "oh s***" moment to draw you in, sets up early on what the threat is for our hero without explaining everything, and then, as the mystery is slowly revealed, our leads are making these tactical plays and counterplays against a competent and very dangerous enemy. It doesn't keep the plot quite as clean and strategy-oriented as TPM, but the ending still wrapped up everything in a very narratively satisfying way.

Honnestly I don’t think it matters if it looks “good” or “bad” but rather that it’s inherently unethical in production and puts artists out of the very little work they already get. The video could look better than any anime ever and I would still maintain its shitty.

my main issue with these recommendations is that they are very long. If I'm recommending anime to someone new to the medium, I wouldn't ask them to commit to hundreds of episodes right away.
@paulvillerius848
@paulvillerius848 Год назад
It's probably confirmation bias. Anime/manga fans get hooked on a series and follow it the whole way through, and that makes it their entry point into the wider fandom. I started on long-running Shonen Jump manga, but I know that they're not to everyone's tastes, even though RU-vid keeps recommending me videos of people reading One Piece for the first time.
@DrBunnyMedicinal
@DrBunnyMedicinal Год назад
It's also (as alluded to by Yazy and Geoff but not explicitly raised) exclusively hard-core Never-Ending Shonen. I mean, all of those series are widely beloved for a load of reasons, but that's not at all representative of what *is* available in anime. And as you say, the never-ending number of episodes of DragonBall and One Piece especially is a big bar to entry all by itself.
@ConvincingPeople
@ConvincingPeople Год назад
Yeah, I adore Hunter x Hunter and find the Chimera Ant arc in particular deeply emotionally compelling, but that arc alone is nearly as long as the entirety of Monster, itself a pretty long show. What's more, people do have this frustrating habit of treating shounen anime and shounen action/battle anime as the totality of anime as a medium, generally quite unintentionally, and that's… really frustrating. I get that those shows serve as a gateway for a lot of people into the medium-not me, weirdly enough; the thing that got me hooked on anime as such was watching Azumanga Daioh and Welcome to the NHK! in segments on RU-vid-but like, even setting aside that this isn't a universal experience (as noted), it's just not going to click with everyone where something more specific to their existing tastes might, or indeed something out of left field yet intriguing might.

If I had to pick a top 5 for anime newcomers, my picks would be Death Note for an accessible thriller, Violet Evergarden for emotional drama, Yona of the Dawn for fantasy and romance, Haikyuu for shounen sports hype, and Spy x Family for broad appeal with a little something for everyone. My heart wants to recommend niche darlings like Mushishi and Death Parade, both of which I actually showed my mother in her fifties who doesn't know a damn thing about anime and she really enjoyed!)
@DrBunnyMedicinal
@DrBunnyMedicinal Год назад
I don't know about Violet Evergarden as an intro, because that's VERY heavy on the angst/Feels(tm), but there absolutely **needs** to be at least one KyoAni show in any Anime Gateway list. Hyouka, or Tamako Market would be good, but ultimately K-On would be perhaps be the best choice. (Even though it's not my favourite KyoAni effort.)
@ElysianLys
@ElysianLys Год назад
@@DrBunnyMedicinal Hey, for some people, the best entrance to a medium involves having their kneecaps shattered! I know plenty of angst goblins who would be captivated by the level of depth, because the perception of anime is that it's for kids or otherwise shallow, silly fun. Never underestimate the power of a good life-ruiner to hook someone and make them a lifelong fan. That's how I got in with Fruits Basket!
@DrBunnyMedicinal
@DrBunnyMedicinal Год назад
@@ElysianLys Well, those folks should absolutely start off with Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket, at least season 1 of Iron-blooded Orphans, then maybe Violet Evergarden and definitely Grave of the Fireflies. If that doesn't utterly break them, they can try some Russian cinema for a change and watch Come And See, which I have been reliably advised WILL do the trick. As for Fruits Basket, no argument it has it's heart-breaking parts (Momiji's story about his mother, not the least), but I still feel it is ultimately an uplifting story. So many of the cast come out of it battered but not broken, and the ones that were broken going in Hatori, for example) generally have at least some healing by the end.

@ConvincingPeople
@ConvincingPeople Год назад
Honestly, I think people kind of oversell "anime bullshit" in a series' relative accessibility or lack thereof? Partly because when people talk about "anime bullshit" they tend to conflate Japanese cultural specificity and niche genre signifiers with, say, raunchy material which some might find objectionable or distracting, which are in many ways very different things, but also because how outside of one's prior experience a particular work is can be part of its attraction. Like, that's why a lot of us like anime specifically: Because of the ways in which it is different from a lot of other media. That said: Paranoia Agent rules. Absolutely stellar introduction to the medium.

Honestly surprised Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Trigun, and maybe Outlaw Star were not on that list. Ironblooded Orphans Spy Family is another good entry one One Punchman Deathnote Something like that gives you a wide spectrum of what the medium is in various ways. Foodwars: "What about me?" I love you Foodwars but you are definitely intermediate level for those that want to go down the rabbit hole. Edit: Megalobox and Yu Yu Hakusho two starter kit recommends too.
@ConvincingPeople
@ConvincingPeople Год назад
I'm less of a Cowboy Bebop fan than most but it is an interesting work which bridges more typically "Western" and live-action Asian cinematic influences with things you can only really do in animation in a similar way to the recent Chainsaw Man adaptation (which I love to bits). The original Trigun, however, while a little rough around the edges, is very fun and pretty accessible while also being very "anime" in a way that's kind of hard to quantify. Gundam is its own rabbit hole and I do not know how to broach that particular question one way or the other if I'm being real with you.

Summertime Rendering is great, up until you think about the perspective of the villains for like 5 seconds. Spoilers below. So the whole thing is based on time loops and how when Shinpei dies, he branches off into an alternate timeline where he has the opportunity to try again. However, that doesn't change anything in the universe he died in. He is simply jumping to another timeline. It's not like the timeline he died in in the first loop is destroyed or erased or anything, and if he manages to take out Haine and the priest guy, that happens in the universe he shifted to, not the one he left. So, at the loop on the 24th where the whole island is consumed and Ryunosuke (or the sister counterpart) domes him with a shotgun.... Haine won. She did it. She consumed the whole island, sans Shinpei. He can fuck right off to an alternate reality and stop it all he wants to, it isn't changing the reality he left. Technically there is a reality where Haine completed her goal, we saw it happen. All that tiny little idiot had to do was jump to the reality where she won and reaped said benefits. Now, that being said, all this timey wimey bullshit is always more complicated than it's worth, so if you just suspend your disbelief and don't take it to seriously, it doesn't matter. I loved the show so much, I watched it a second time in a week with my wife. If you want a more complicated and even more well thought out time travel movie, watch Primer. It's insane. Thank you for your time. I hate myself for thinking too much about this.

I wanted to like Summertime Render, and I REALLY did in the beginning. The first few episodes are *chef’s kiss* good. But gradually it began to feel like every twist was almost purely for shock value with no noticeable foreshadowing. things just seem to happen. Also, I know it’s a thriller, but this one was really lacking in character development or development of character relationships aside from the most basic of cliches. It’s just PURE plot, which isn’t my cup of tea. The lore sure was cool though! That almost got me through it, but I ended up dropping it around episode 20.

100% agree with Yazy about that anime recommendation list. I think something like Gundam: Witch from Mercury would do way better as a new introduction to the medium, because it's an artistic achievement you couldn't just do in another medium easily while telling a very good story easily recognizable to anyone with a general history of fiction: the prologue is completely self-contained story about a small family experiencing dramatic events as they're rocked by the storms of a wider world, it's under an hour, and it's free on youtube, so the barrier to entry is incredibly low. The overall anime borrows the structure and themes of Shakespeare and is thus recognizable to most of the world thanks to the influence of western culture. There's no fanservice or sexualization of underage characters at any point, there's barely of the anime rules lawyering bullshit that's endemic to shonen battle shit, there's no isekai. Save that shit for niche interests after the 101 is over IMO. Just because we're talking about anime doesn't mean we have to focus on the most stereotypical ass anime possible, otherwise we'd be recommending Rent a Girlfriend and making sure nobody ever gets into this medium ever again lmao edit: WfM also has the romance angle covered. If it must be a hetero romance for some reason, Insomniacs After School probably works better than like any other het anime I've ever seen. I think Re:Zero is like as close as you can get to a decent Isekai, but I hate that entire genre to the point where anything I like that people call isekai I feel compelled to argue why it's not, like Otherside Picnic (urusekai is a different word from isekai!!). And the last time I watched a sports anime was Keijo so uh. can't really chime in on that one lmao

58:10 (my thoughts after watching the anime man's video about this) [ *I may add more* ] If it's for a specific person I'd ask questions first. If it's just a general one to capture the feel of anime. 🤔 1. Attack on Titan. 2. My Hero Academia 3. Fruits Basket 4. SAO Progressive 5. Mob Psycho Why? 1. for the mystery, war, politics, and thriller, it starts with typical anime tropes but immediately slaps you back into the messed-up world. 2. Fills the school, tournament ark, coming of age and Shonen spot, as well as not immediately having super high stakes, also fills that feeling of battle and big punch outs that can lead you into dragon ball, JoJo, Baki etc. It being based on super heroes also will help if you're already into DC & Marvel. 3. I'ma be honest, I've only seen a few romances, and it's a bit weird, so I just slapped this on here to fill the Shoujo, romance kind of spot. 😅 4. SAO... but movie, more focused on Asuna, supposed to be better, fill that in another world or in a game spot without going full Isekai 5. It focuses and the more human aspects of characters and the real struggle of the main character. It's a great start for shows like that, and I think anyone can see a part of themselves in these wacky characters. It's also set in Japan with the whole school vibe and club just like fruits basket leaving a pattern there, and it's a comedy and beautifully animated. Given 10 options, I would branch out a bit more, but with just 5, this is what I got from the like 200 anime I watched/know of; and I think they lead into other shows well.

So this is probably going to get me a lot of heat, but I have the most respect for artists out of just about every profession because of the time and the effort that went into learning and making the art. But however to use the human child example, how a child learns to be better at art is learning for other people's art, composition, line work, proportionality, reflection, colors, all are learned by artists from other artists and what they did. I wouldn't say that the child is stealing the art because he is simply walking through an art museum and learned from the artwork for reference, neither would I say an ai doing the same with an image of said artwork. And about how ai can produce an example copy of a piece of art, so could a skilled enough artist if that's what they're trying to do, and I wouldn't say that that person would be stealing the artwork either. Why should an artist be compensated for having their art used as a reference, when humans do the same thing; cannibalizing artists hard work to learn it for themselves, just as the ai is doing? But this isn't going to completely eliminate artists, just has handmade items are still around and always will be. Hell if your into art, the vast majority of the time it's not even the art itself that matters, it's the artist and the meaning behind the art that makes it valuable or important. And ai isn't ever going to make that change

15:00 ... either this was made by an AI, in which case it can't have copyright protection because AIs are not human, or it was made by a human, in which case it broke copyright law by using artwork from others.

oh come on, why is it so hard to get a good anime starter list for people? here's what I go with: death parade, vinland saga, Attack on titan, fruits basket, Monster, megalo box, a silent voice, redline

The idea of automation in art is odd, like in terms of comics I don't like Superman just because he's superman, I like Superman because Grant Morrison writes him, I like Superman because Jamal Campbell or Jorge Jimenez draws him What I like are the works of the artists on these things Of course there's more nuance to this than I can fully explain in a youtube comment but those are my basic thoughts

I was asked recently by someone who never watched anime on what to watch first. I said Avatar the Last Airbender. Told them to finish it first to get used to Animation with an overall plot running from start to finish, it has its fun fluff episodes that still have call backs to later on but once they are done with it then have them come back and talk about what they want from the next experience.

The whole argument that they don’t the time to learn how to draw so it’s unfair to gatekeep art is so insane. Imagine if someone was like that for sports. They created a cyborg suit for playing basketball and thought it’s unfair if they aren’t allowed to use that to play in the NBA.

It’s extremely hard to recommend anime to first timers. It has to have broad appeal, not too long (26 episodes max) and not too horny.

There is no such thing as the perfect anime to recommended anyone. People are so different and varied to anything can turn someone off or on from anime. Trying to find something that has no anime bullshit to recommended is impossible because all anime has some bullshit its anime after all. Trying to find a perfect Aime to recommend someone because it's not embarrassing rather than a show or series that you genuinely love but has shortcomings and flaws is the wrong way to introduce anime to someone new. Anime can be bloated, weird art style, weird, sexist, xenophobic, homophobic, cringe, inconstant, too long, too short, to high concept, too dumb hiding these things isn't going to make a new fan a fan. But if I look at someone and say please watch One Piece it's something that is really a part of me, something I really love and something I want to share with you, not even the perfect most well written excellently performed anime can beat that recommendation. Michael B Jordan shared his love for anime with all of us. Like most anime fans he wants people to love and enjoy anime. And what did the anime community do they shamed him. They acted like gate keepers who knew all the right questions and had all the right answers. In everyone knee jerk reaction to the list of anime they failed to see the forest through the trees. Here is a really mainstream Hollywood celebrity telling people to watch anime, and the community response was no don't watch anime. So, what M.BJ. is a Shonen head does that make him less of an anime fan? No. So, what if the list is all Shonen anime does that make them less anime? No. Maybe everyone right and the first 100 people that look into theses anime series won't become lifelong fans, but that doesn't mean we should discount the 101st that will. I choose to celebrate MBJ list. You go king share the series that you love. No matter how good or bad or different they are from what I would like, I know there are people out there that will fall in love with these series just like he did when he was young kid throwing up ninjutsu hand signs or doing Kamehameha in his bedroom watching toonanime.

I think it's a good start, with troupes that aren't off putting to the average non anime fan... *but I opted to remove it from my list to place AOT and MHA* to balance out darker story that subverts and more wholesome story that gives yah the troupe and training and save the world vibe
