Less a thing Geoff was wrong about so much as predictions that didn't age well, but I'd love to see a follow-up on series that you were SURE they'd stick the landing only to fall flat on their face, like Babylon and KADO. (The latter of which still stings.) It's really nice that your perspective continues to grow and change and that you're willing to reconsider points you've argued before, so thanks for sharing and I'm looking forward to more podcast hangouts. As somebody that's been around for all of these takes, good and bad (god, I think since your Undertale review, which fucks me up to no end), super excited to see where you both go from here!

This was something I was actually expecting from the podcast, though as you correctly pointed out, they were less Geoff being wrong as much as predictions that didn't really pan out. In a future episode I would really like to hear Geoff's take on the rest of Babylon, which at this point is definitely something that won't warrant its own video.

reasons black clover is like naruto: MC wants to be the best guy and the leader reasons black clover is like blue exorcist: there are two twin brothers who are orphans raised in a church. the older one is taller, handsome, calm and quiet, and is conventionally talented and powerful; while the younger one is short, loud, extremely physically strong, and his power is extremely unconventional and relies on the power of a demon that they are related to. both brothers are members of an organization where they have to climb the ranks of knighthood to reach the top (even the ranks themselves are basically identical), with the younger brother getting stuck with a band of misfits, and the older brother getting to rub shoulders with the eccentric powerhouses of the upper ranks of the org

I've been through the whole pirating thing, and so on both with music, videos and anime. There's a lot of facets to it, and I think a lot of fans are assholes about it, but in general, I have been exposed to more stuff and bought more physical media because of my piracy. Since current trends are about lost media, I repeat the same things I did back then, which is that people should buy physical more often and keep physical media...

It makes me real sad that my favorite anime gas such a toxic following. Makes me infuriated that they're stopping you from talking about this and making people more interested. Jojo's is accessible BECAUSE it's broken into parts, forcing people to watch in order just makes it feel like One Piece to get in to. I started with JoJo part 1, went to part 3 because 4Kids (at the time) only had those for free on demand. I thought is sucked! Then I went back and watched part 2 and got hyped for all the rest. I agree part skipping is fine (I actually tell people if they get bored to skip a part none of them are prereqs) but my personal experience was that doing so lessened the experience for me. I maintain that JoJo part 2 is my favorite and a great representative of the show as a whole (though not the best part, that would be 7, 4 or 6)

With piracy, though I'd prefer p2p it's illegal in most jurisdictions whereas with streaming sites it's even allowed in the most restricted regions i.e. the US. I used to download everything using torrents until my Canadian ISP kept sending letters saying I could be liable and then forwarded my ISP to law firms in the US. I mean yeah technically as it stands they have no legal avenue as I'm a Canadian citizen but that doesn't stop the Shaw from throttling my connection and taking special interest in my internet activity.

Nobody actually starts the Metal Gear series by playing Metal Gear 1, most skip to the third one, Solid 1. Pretty much no one actually started Dragon Ball at Dragon Ball, they all started at Z. I still stand by what I commented back in the "skip Jojo parts" backlash shitshow: if I think a series' beginning will be a bad place to start for someone I will recommend them skipping to a better launch-off point. They can always go back later after they are already invested in the story.

I’m all for the ethical consumption of literally everything, but that does require a level of class privilege. In the early days, Adobe never cracked down hard on people pirating their software bc they knew those same people would be paying users eventually. Your piracy discussion gave me flashbacks to when I had an entire argument with my high school economics teacher about why piracy is fine actually. I personally disagree with some parts of what you said about piracy (at least what could be picked up from how you put it, you obviously didnt go into too much detail), but I also only pirate stuff that literally isn't available elsewhere unless you buy it from Apple or Amazon or whatever, and in the cases I do pirate I know getting it legitimately would help corporations more than creators. I also make sure to spread word-of-mouth about anime I like because I want as many people as I can get to know and support good anime. I have the same thought for games. Why would I buy a game that's out of print for a thousand bucks that all goes to some random nobody when u could just... get it for free? Piracy is a tricky topic but in my opinion there are definitely reason to pirate media.

Call me crazy but I think kakegururi is like Sherlock Holmes. The reader/watcher isn’t supposed to be afraid for the protagonist but be in awe of how they use their wiles to outsmart their opponent.
@Ceighk
@Ceighk 2 года назад
The tension in Kakegurui doesn't come from whether Jabami will win - she WILL win. It comes from the fact that she doesn't actually care about the consequences, she just enjoys the thrill of possibly losing. Ultimately, she can't be trusted not to put all the people who depend on her on the line just for the thrill of it, to keep pushing the stakes higher, and potentially to fuck them over if it makes the game more interesting for her. Yes she ends up saving the day, but she does so because she's an addict, not a hero, and therefore can't be wholly relied upon. (Some versions of Sherlock Holmes also take this approach, so I think the comparison is apt, there's just more to it. It's also notable that they are both ostensibly from the perspective of a relatively passive character who is swept up into the actual protagonist's world)

This was a dope video for a couple of reasons 1. It’s always cool to me to see RU-vidrs revisit old videos and takes either for a good laugh or to re-evaluate what they said and address them as their present selves. 2. You actually feel differently and have grown into a different person/content creator and can give us different opinions on these things and even tell us a bit about how you felt in that moment as opposed to now. 3. You have a bit of a behind scenes look at how you thought about generating content and engagement 4. I had no idea the backlash for certain videos ever got that bad. That’s the dark side of RU-vid or social media in general most people will never see because their platform is nowhere near as big as yours but despite what you may have done to rile them up it sounds like they went too far. I watched Phantom Blood 1st , Battle Tendency 2nd , Stardust Cruasers 3rd and I have yet to watch the other arcs of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Kissanime I remember had Malware ads on it and i didn't watch your Erased Video. I only watched your Sao Videos on Why is sao Loved and about you reviewing the Light Novel Sao Progressive Volume 1. I own 34 Sao light novels at home of the Aincrad, Fairy Dance, Phantom Bullet, Mothers Rosarion, Early and Late, Alicization, Unital Ring, Kiss and Fly, Moon Cradle and Progressive arcs and I've finished reading and enjoyed them all several times by now here.

Glad to see the channel's return! This video offers some great insight on how someone who's been in the RU-vid game for long enough can change their style and behavior, not to mention the absolutely horrible side of dealing with hateful comments. Everyone always says they can brush aside the hate thanks to seeing all the great comments left by others, but the Jojo debacle (which I had been completely unaware of) can prove that it can be hard to do that sometimes. Others have already made the same comment about turning away from the mics, but there's also the occasional overlap of voices due to the way the mics are pointed. I don't know how manageable this is in your new apartment, but the Dead Meat Podcast's old setup of the two facing each other from across the table (i.e. mics pointing right at their mouths but away from each other) seemed to work really well for them. They also have a cat who likes getting up on the table while they record, so you'd even have room for Bobby and Junkrat to interrupt!

I think the reason why I support piracy even though I don't actually pirate any more has a lot to do with the way that copyrights work in modernity and Nintendo's practices make a very compelling natural argument which makes mentioning them feel so poignant. The purpose of copyright was to grant creators exclusive control over their works, for a limited period of time so that they could use that time to make money off their work free from market pressures of bad actors who would simply copy them, adding nothing of any value. Importantly though that time was limited because we wanted others who had something to offer to be able to build upon the greatest works in our society, ever improving things. Disney didn't write The Little Mermaid, Alice in Wonderland, or Snow White, but because those works no longer qualified for copyright he and his studio were able to build upon them, modify them, and adapt them, and in doing so society benefited. Unfortunately we repeatedly lost sight of the societal purpose of copyright, and at the behest of corporations, extended its duration from 14 years originally (with option of a single renewal of another 14 years) in 1790, to 28 years in 1831, to 28 years with the option to renew for another 28 years in 1909 (56 years total), and in 1976 they changed it to be 75 years, or life of the Author + 50 years, and then again in 1998 to 120 years or life of the author + 70 years. We went from 14 years passive with a max of 28 years if you were working on it, to 120 years base or Life of the Author + 70 years, whichever is longer. But by the time copyright expires now no one who was around to experience the thing will ever get to add to that cultural work. And no amount of extra time to make money off of something is going to encourage a dead guy to make more stuff, and most great creative workers don't have family that are uniquely capable of carrying on the legacy of that work, and also want to! All of this is so that companies like Nintendo and Disney can keep selling the same thing without competition for as long as they like. They're holding a monopoly on culture. Moana, which is no longer actively in the public consciousness already (and its only been 7 years) wont enter public domain until 2136! The original Super Mario Bros. arcade game was originally released in 1985, and you will not legally be allowed to play that game without Nintendo's permission until 2105, and almost every single person who was born before the NES was released in 1986 will be dead by then. Let me rephrase that again for you: You will never legally be allowed to tell a story about ANY IP that was created during your lifetime unless you work for/with the company that owns it. Copyright is bullshit. Let the culture flow. Its ours, it rightfully belongs to the people who grew up with it. Its their culture now, so let them have it, let them rework it, retell it, and spread it to others. Long dead are the days of folk songs, oral tradition, and cultural stories. These were all core elements of the human experience for thousands of years before we had written language, thousands of years pre-history, and we've had that stolen from us so that Sony Pictures can have the exclusive rights to try to suck money out of us with another Men in Black movie whenever they want; so that Universal can make a 13th fast and furious movie because they didn't milk enough money yet out of the first 12, an animated series, and two additional short films they've produced across the last 21 years (which would still give them another 7 years under the first copyright time window,) because $7 BILLION dollars isn't enough for the suits who contributed absolutely nothing of value to the creative work they now own and will own until everyone who had anything to do with the original work has been dead for almost a hundred years. Copyright is Bullshit. If you're sailing the high seas friends, may the winds be ever at your back.

I think I lost interest in Yugoh afeter watching some episodes of Yugioh Duel Monsters, GX, 5Ds and Zexal and I never saw any of the other seaons of Yugioh like Arc V, Vrains etc. I think more of my Sao knowledge was from Gamerturk, Kleines filmrochen and CJ teachings than yours tbh here Geoff. I myself was propmted by a few forums online and other youtubers to get the books although not all my purchases of those books were internet prompting and some I thought about getting myself.

I've been pirating since '04, the first anime being Tenjho Tenge, back then it was basically because I couldn't wait, selfish I'll admit, but I would still buy the official US releases, at least back then, for a good solid 10 years or so. However in post-2016 when everyone lost their fuckin' minds and became political activists overnight showing the true colors of the media cult of what was and still is today, in controlling a narrative in what people should and shouldn't be watching for _"Modern audiences."_ I pretty much stopped giving a flying fuck about Western Media, including the US Anime licensing companies. When Fuk-i-mation & Cunt-chyroll went ballistic on riding that post-gamergate/metoo feminism wave with VA's insisting on not shutting the fuck up on twitter, and making more unprofessional changes to certain anime that to this day still deny or refuse to apologize for, adding up in the years following with the mess of misusing money, the fucking bullshit with Vic, and the mergers, the very confusing as fuck mergers, and aimless direction of where it was all headed. There's also the other bullshit like the CR Anime Awards, and that mess known as HGS, but I digress. It doesn't matter anymore, because it's all under one big mega corp now, Commiefornia's proudly transitioned Soyny PlayStation: _"because fuck the Japanese for their pesky misogynistic & pedo anime, manga & video games."_ _"Screw the Japanese creators, screw the Japanese audience, they have no place in our diverse world of equity & inclusion unless it's a pregnant man, or women that must cover their body."_ So no. It's completely not worth my money, not a single fuckin' cent to pay for anything under US redistribution when it comes to anime or manga, online or otherwise. If Japan wants to, they can start up their own online services and make Anime Netflix, just not call it Netflix, if Microsoft can do the same and call it gamepass, Japan can do it just as well. The will, the potential, and clearly the money is all there, Japan just needs to *_capitalize_* on it. Til then, the high seas are completely open for me, and anyone else with the smarts to get passed all the intrusive ad bullshit. Torrents? Fuck Torrents. Direct DLs are the most efficient methods ever, so as long as you know what your downloading.

Hey, welcome to Alberta, it kinda sucks, but is also kinda great at the same time. It's weird here. We have a lot of Jeff's, seriously, every school I've ever been too and every job I've ever had, there's always been at least one other Jeff. Clearly you have to change your name, there are too many of us. ;p On another note, it's cool too see you look back and talk about regrets and stuff. While I'm sure videos like this are less popular, I personally think it's really good to see. In terms of Reki, personally, I've always thought he just got famous too early. The original SAO was... meh, but it was a really cool concept stuffed into a format that didn't suit it. Then he got super famous without the time to really develop as a writer. At least that's my educated guess about why the Alfheim arc exists. Having read most of his SAO stuff, I do see him improving as a writer, especially with the Progressive books. Is it amazing, no, but I still rather enjoy it despite it's flaws.

Kakegurui should be taken more as a show like Pokemon, Yugioh, or even Kobra Kai, but instead of ludicously powerful animals, card games based on egyptian gods, or karate, the entirety of the character's world revolves around gambling. Somehow everything leads back to the show's central premise, and the characters have huge, in-your-face personalities to make each encounter revolving around the same activity all feel unique and interesting. It's more of a character show than anything else. A 'character study' is going too far with it. You're not going to dissect the personality of Weevile Underwood, are you? He's just a screeching nerd midboss. Similar things could be said about Kakegurui's fingernail-collecting midboss. Similarly, you know Yugi or Ash will pull a win out of their butt out of nowhere half the time, but that doesn't make the encounter itself any less exciting in the moment.

I agree that the JoJo watch order backlash was a total circle jerk. I heard so many commenters and even some anime youtubers ridicule that watch order without giving any reason for why it isn't a good idea. Personally, I think that I probably would have enjoyed JoJo's Bizarre Adventure more if I'd watched it the way Geoff recommended instead of the regular order. Experiencing part 1 for the first time after seeing part 3 would have been cool imo; on it's own, part 1 just feels uninteresting to me, but as an origin story to the hero and villain, I think it would have been great if only I had some idea of who the hero and villain had become before hand.

On the SAO thing, I think its great you've backed off of the "you should feel bad for liking it" thing for anime in general. It took me a while to come to this conclusion but: Most media is absolute trash. Most movies, shows, books, Comics, Games, etc, its almost all trash and it always has been. But everyone likes trash, they just like their own brand of trash, and that includes me. Very few pieces of media can truly be lauded as masterpieces, or great works of art, and basically nothing is universally appreciable. I may have amazing, well thought out arguments as to why the thing I love is great, but that doesn't make it a universal truth that its good. Ask anyone who has never seen an anime before to watch the original Madoka Magica and the majority of those people will have no idea what just happened, and have no appreciation for what it did to the whole of the genre for the next ten years. The same is true for most media. And even if you understand something, and can appreciate it for what it is, and see the greatness within it, that doesn't mean you like it. I appreciate Re:Zero, and it pushed me to see some things about myself that I'm glad to have the opportunity to correct. I think Re:Zero is an important work to the body of art and culture that is anime, but I don't like it. I don't enjoy watching it. Its uncomfortable at times, and reminds me of things that are just easier to forget. Will I watch it and show it to others some time? Probably, it is important to me, and had a huge effect on me for a while, but I don't like it. So yeah, SAO is trash, but we all like trash sometimes and there is nothing wrong with that. Just... be ready to grow and learn to love things for all sorts of reasons, and don't let SAO or any other piece of trash for that matter, be the only thing you consume.

I think the reason Geoff's Thing Bad era never really worked for me (his uncharted video was particularly a sticking point for me, I love him, but god that one was SHIT) is because, unlike his stated inspirations, AVGN and golden age NC, dude just didn't have the presence or the voice for it. AVGN and late 2000s, early to mid 2010s nostalgia critic work because at no point are you asked to root for them. Rather, the universe punishes them at every turn for the crime of being alive, and it's framed as the universe being right. In the NC's case: "look at this moron, he thinks he's a legit critic! Point and laugh, children at home, as I - an angry and vengeful god - make his life hell". Geoff wanted to be like that, but his voice doesn't have the octaves or the sound to reach the hilarious, daffy duck energy of "back when he was good" Doug Walker, and he was always framed as being ultimately right, unlike the AVGN, who built literally every aspect of his persona with the stated goal of appearing as sad as possible. Geoff's roast format has a much better angle, with him posing as the snarky riffer to the dumbassery on screen. Inviting the audience to be in on the joke
@Manganization
@Manganization 2 года назад
There's also the consideration that games at least have the virtue of being mechanically bad. Something like manga and anime has a bit of, but it isn't so much a deal-breaker as a game that is just awful to play. Most of the games that AVGN screamed about were games that were mechanically broken. Anime critiques in general tend to choose shows that are mostly fine or immensely popular and then dunk on them for extended periods of time than is necessary. It's made worse when the criticism made are for the most shallow of reasons eg:( this show is repetitive/formulaic. Okay, elaborate, please. A show being formulaic itself isn't a bad thing. Explain why you think it doesn't work.)

I actually disagree, I think Geoff's delivery style being not as raw intense and emotional as NC or AVGN works in his favour because it focuses the criticism on the criticism

Jeff was always right about skipping parts. There are just people who are very dogmatic about reading a series the way it was presented. But JoJo is an anthology series by nature. It is literally designed to be picked up and digested without having to be filled in about previous parts. There are very little in the way of connecting parts together. But I do also understand that some parts are elevated significantly by having prior knowledge of previous parts. Two of these are Parts 6 and 8.

To be honest, JoJo season 1,2 are ten years old and can be hard to get into for newer viewers. Even 3 kind of drags a bit. Parts 4 and 5 are a better entry to the series to get viewers interested. They are self contained stories for the most part.
