In this video share with you the tools that I would use to enhance my academic writing and provide a step-by-step guide to writing quicker.
Prompts I used:
1. This is a file containing multiple abstracts from scientific papers. Use these abstracts to create a scaffold from which someone with no experience could structure their own abstract for their paper.
2. I am currently writing a paper for peer review and need help writing the abstract:
Create a referenced Introduction or Background statement about organic photovoltaic devices that I could use for the first two sentences.
Include
- Introduce the field of study and the specific topic.
- State the problem or challenge that your research addresses. In my case removing the need for harmful solvents during manufacture and using water-dispersed semiconducting nanoparticles
3. I am currently writing a paper for peer review and need help writing the Introduction:
The paper is about OPV devies and the problem that the research addresses is removing the need for harmful solvents during manufacture using water-dispersed semiconducting nanoparticle
Write
Background Information: Provide a brief overview of the field or the problem being addressed.
Problem Statement: Clearly state the problem or challenge the research aims to tackle.
Significance: Explain why solving this problem is important.
4. Find a reference for this statement:

I'm just a bit confused and need to know what the best tool is for academic writing? (I need to be able to justify my research hypothesis. Writing a well-researched paper requires a diligent approach towards reading and analyzing source material. While AI tools can assist in the process, it is important to avoid complacency and strive for excellence. As PhD students, it is crucial to acknowledge and respect the challenges that our parents faced during their own academic journeys. By adopting a proactive and dedicated attitude, we can overcome obstacles and achieve success in our own studies.
@yoloswaginator

100% agree, because I respect the challenges my ancestors faced during their academic journeys (doubt there were many) I refrain from using the internet or even calculators altogether and rely on an Abacus. That‘s where I draw the line.

Hi Andy , thanks for all your great work as always. Do you have any suggestions for AI voice to text ? This would be for recording lectures to then process into notes. Academic papers need to adapt to new standards of consuming content. It is a waste of time for both the researchers and the reviewers. There is no major benefit for the field of study much less to society as a whole. Society is the actual funding entity for most research (tax payers) so we should be demanding actual solutions from academics.

Horrible advice! Reading abstracts is already boring in general, mostly since most authors rewrite the same boilerplate banalities about a subject again and again, citing the same references etc. And now, this tendency will accelerate with AI. Then, we definitely need AI to detect that the abstract has not been generated by AI 🙃

@yoloswaginator
@yoloswaginator 11 месяцев назад
This might work for you, but don‘t assume that this is what „one“ always does. For me, first setting up some rough structure helps me iterate fast, and a tentative abstract helps narrow down the potential paths the paper can take during the process.
@VladimirBlagoderov
@VladimirBlagoderov 11 месяцев назад
@@yoloswaginator You are mistaken structure for an abstract. The structure of a scientific paper was stable for at least 60 years: introduction, methods, results, discussion; with additional bits and bobs when needed. If you write an abstract before a paper it is like having an advert before you got a product. That's how things are done in marketing, not in academia - do you want to consider a career change?

This is where the buck stops for me. If you are using AI tools to do the job for you... where the heck is the 'journey' of learning how to write an academic article or thesis? While I do appreciate some of your videos, to me using AI to write articles is a very clear demonstration of academic misconduct and sheer cheating. Where is the challenge? Where is the critical analysis that humans should have if they are to enter academia? How can you demonstrate any cognitive competency if you are not making the effort, you are not developing it? If you don't like academia, you certainly have other options, but I do not think it is helpful to air these cutting-corner videos. I am catching students using this AI already and they are far from having learned anything in the process other than asking a robot to write their assessment.
