Dan Fitzpatrick comes to Thinking Digital to discuss how artificial intelligence will dramatically change formal education as we know it. While that might sound threatening to teachers, Dan foresees a future where AI can bring huge improvements to education making our system far better for students, educators and society.
Dan Fitzpatrick is the author of the acclaimed book, The AI Classroom: The Ultimate Guide to Artificial Intelligence in Education, offering insights and tactics for harnessing AI in education. Dan’s former roles include serving as Director for Digital Strategy at Education Partnership North East, and as a senior leader at a secondary school.
Presently, he assumes the role of Director at Thirdbox.org, Director at Edufuturists, and Director of Scout Industries. In 2023 alone, Dan has trained approximately 6,000 educators worldwide, guiding them in the integration of AI into education. Additionally, he has partnered with hundreds of small business leaders and marketing professionals, such as those from Welsh Water and Cleanspec Cumbria, to enhance their practices using artificial intelligence. He has featured on prominent media platforms such as Good Morning Britain, BBC Radio 4, ITV News, and This World on WION, where he discussed the implications and potential of AI in education and beyond.
Dan holds an M.A. from Durham University, a PGCE from UCL, and a Post Graduate Diploma in Design Thinking & Innovation from MIT.

Where does the "democratisation of creativity" begin and the "theft of creativity" end? In fact, where does the "democratisation of creativity" begin and where does "deception" end? These are additional layers of education that must be addressed.

I am a former educator and I can see the AI on the wall. Because of access to almost all information at our fingertips and no need to memorize, we need to analyze what kind of in person education we need. We see our kids so distracted and screen driven, but is this there problem or have they already adapted to the future…and educators haven’t caught up?

AI is about to teach a lot of children incorrect information. Everyone should carefully educate themselves about the intrinsic limits of these technologies when it comes to factual consistency (due to their reliance of statistical inference and confabulation).

Everyone should likewise educate themselves about the biases and agendas of whoever is running their education system. That is why family critiquing sessions of TV ads are among the best childhood learning experiences for life.

This is a misconception. There are guidelines that can be set based on how a particular AI is designed. People seem to think that GPT4 is the only AI. This is not true, it’s just more well known.

@@gregbaker3701 Most people get their news from Facebook and Twitter - meanwhile factual checked sources are dying off. I have no confidence that consumers will not seek the cheapest, and most bias confirming, option.

You brought up equity. That’s where schools can make the difference. We cannot deny that all parents are not going to use an educational system like synthesis for various reasons.
