3rd year teaching assistant here (I’m 24 years old, my boss is 40) for a Psychology paper. I just had a student blatantly use ChatGPT (and our University has such poor plagiarism consequences that almost no one ever gets punished) and I was so mad at the idea of having to mark an assignment generated by AI that I just copied their assignment back into ChatGPT and asked it to heavily critique the students assignment.

I’m an English and History Teacher in Australia. Teaching grades 7-12. Since the beginning of the year I’d estimate 30-40% of my assessment tasks (not exams) are majority AI generated. My school uses an online service to detect AI plagiarism, but the kids counter that by using AI rewording/summarising software to counter that. The entire English department was told to suck it up and mark them as if they’re legitimate. If I had to guess I’d say that in 5-10 years there will either be serious legislation changes to the national curriculum we have, or a total revamp of the entire education system here.

Content idea big A: Call up people from chat in discord about their experiences with using GPT for their essays. Wether they got caught, got away with it or got falsy accused. Similar to when you talked to chat about their jobs. And yes, false accusations for using AI language models to write essays and whatnot is more common than you might think. As a certified old and bald boomer, i only know three people that are, as of now still in uni, and two of them got falsy accused of using AI for certain assignments and the other one got away with using one. Might be an interesting convo with chat 🤷

Here at Rutgers University they let us use chat GPT. The standards are high enough that something written by chat gpt won't get a good grade anyways. Chat GPT also really really struggles with citations for anything in higher education so if you have chat gpt write your paper and include citations, it gives you links that lead to 404 pages etc. Another way professors have sort of fired back is AI graded annotations. Before this semester professors really had no way to make sure students were actually reading the course material but now they use tools like Perusall which automatically grade annotations based on quality. It has made the day-to-day class load higher for everyone.

It's so interesting discovering new things, and I never understood the students who would waste their time during classes, like you're not doing anyone favors. But I do understand that its not always the student's fault, since a bad teacher can suck all the joys of learning out of anyone. I got lucky that most of the teachers I had were great teachers or at the very least ones that had passion for what they teach, so me and most of my classmates were at least engaged always.

It's not really cheating if you do all the work and put it into gpt to make a cohesive essay. It cuts down on editing time. Before gpt people used to give a jumble of ideas and findings to an english major and pay them to put it together, then do a final edit themselves to emphasise key points. If you tried to do it yourself, the professors (in STEM fields) would give vague feedback like "you're ideas are heading in the right direction, but your paper needs to better put together ". I don't blame them since their expertise is not in english writing. They probably had someone else collate their work when they were students, and as professors they get their subordinates to do it. Personally, using gpt then doing small edits with grammarly has taught me a lot about how to structure essays. Eventually, once I get good enough at it I'll just cut out the middle man (gpt or some other ai) and do it myself in one go.

I teach philosophy at a small liberal arts college, and was a TA at an Ivy within the last year. For whatever reason, so long as you don't use the standard prompts for assignments, AI generated responses (or responses that are significantly AI generated in some way) are usually bad and obvious. Like, they'll either contain things that very clearly go beyond what the student knows, will give a literal bullshit answer, or will closely copy a web source that's caught by the usual plagiarism filters. LLMs haven't been a big issue for a lot of the philosophy teachers I know for this reason. Now, if there're students who take a generated response and improve it, then that's probably not detectable, but also shows that they know enough to shore up the problems in the generated response, and hence is not too bad. My guess why this is all the case is that a lot of online philosophy sources are just wrong or low quality, so LLMs have effectively been trained on dogshit w/r/t philosophy (minus the standard prompts for classes).
@NickHuntingtonKlein
@NickHuntingtonKlein 9 месяцев назад
I'm a professor, and AI is clearly something powerful students should learn to use, but it's also a huge bummer - the point of homework (if it's done well) isn't to produce stuff, it's to make you practice the material. You're going to forget everything I tell you if you don't practice what you've learned afterwards. I wouldn't even mind GPT being used for style improvements or actually turning ideas into text as long as you worked out the ideas and content yourself first so you actually understand what you're having it write. Outsourcing the answers to GPT, or a copy/paste from Google or from the one person who posts all the (usually incorrect) answers to the class Discord means you're truly wasting your tuition dollars. Yeah I could make all the assignments be in-class but I refuse to rework so much of class just to basically be a cop, making a worse experience for students who would actually do it themselves. At some point the arms race is lost - I do what I can but if you won't practice there's only so much I can do, good luck on exam day. And for the record I did try an experiment with having GPT grade essays. It wasn't very good but also I didn't spend much time refining the prompt.

Once you get taught how to actually pad your essays by using quotes from your sources that shit comes together so fast. 1.) Make claim 2.) Introduce quote 3.) Insert quote that justifies claim (long as possible for more words) 4.) Explain how quote justifies claim in your own words. Then just do it again and again until you hit your word count. Then write an intro/conclusion and call that shit a day. You can prepare it in sections for each quote and then just jigsaw that bitch together with some connective tissue joining it together and you have a research paper that argues for whatever bullshit you want it to.

It's interesting, at my university the whole faculty got onboard with ChatGPT. They baked it in to the curriculum for English and coding classes. They teach us how to use it ethically and how to cite/give credit to it. It's pretty neat! Especially for coding! The way they are ensuring students aren't just outright cheating is what they call "homework defense" where you have to describe what you made line by line, which wouldn't be really possible if you just asked ChatGPT to write it. I think something similar could be done for English as well. It does add a bunch of extra steps though which sucks.

Convenience is the death of learning. Just because a technology has a lot of "potential" doesn't mean it is going to be used in an appropriate manner. Don't get me wrong, the modern education system has many many flaws, but the use of AI is almost always an attempt at exploiting those flaws. Homework assignments, essays, etc. are meant to support students learning. Students do work outside of class to learn better, but with stuff like ChatGPT the goal becomes more about working around the courses rather than actually learning anything. Ideally, the issues that this whole thing has exposed would result in more effective change in our education systems, but history has shown that bureaucracy is more likely to figure out ways around the use of AI just to avoid any actual effective work being done. Call me a pessimist, but I don't see anything major being done to improve learning in the cards for a while. It'll be dependent on individual teachers, which is pretty much the exact situation we were in before. Because the system is weak, how much you learn is pretty much purely dependent on either the abilities of the teacher or your self-motivation.

what do you need to learn you can already google everything and know, that's the same thing they were saying when calculators where first a thing that oh no people won't learn how to do complex math now since the calculator can just give you the answer and its going to dumb down our society blah blah blah and now you can't imagine doing complex math without a calculator or not google something to find a reference/answer for something get over it don't make the same mistakes they made in the past when it comes to new technology and just accept it and move on @@secretsilver3662
