The featured game is from the Top Chess Engine Championship, Season 13, Division 4. Leela Chess Zero, equipped with two 1080 Ti's, played as white against Chess22k which was run on 43 cores. The opening was an Open Sicilian, Classical where Leela opted for an atypical 11th move. This early atypical decision would set the stage for the remainder of this 79-move encounter. If one gives up their good bishop for a knight, there ought to be strong justification. What good reasons would the neural network have for doing so in this case?

It’s because Leela and Alpha play chess absolutely beautifully, unlike humans who can make mistakes and can’t really abuse super-long-term positional compensation.

Interesting. A video on that topic would be instructive. There are also analysis tools for Go now based on the LeelaGo Zero project, and Go RU-vidrs are coming to grips with the new AI tools springing up in their game. Chess folks have had a much longer time to get used to the idea, but for Go players it seems pretty alien to them for now.

I find watching people play chess boring in general because I don't understand any of the lingo and I don't really like watching people play chess. It's nothing personal at all. But with AI, I don't need to understand all the move sets, openings, etc, to find a learning algorithm playing chess fascinating. I felt the same way watching Alpha Go play Go (I understood nothing there are well) and watching an 'AI' play DOTA (I don't like DOTA). I did not mean any disrespect, chess just isn't my thing. I mean, I'll play it casually, but watching pros just doesn't do anything for me. I have nothing but respect for the work they put into their skill, however.

ALAKTORN I hate Leela as much for killing her good bishop as I love her for proving you right :D I can see AlphaZero and Leela doing it, but I can't do it and that annoys me as much as it thrills me to see and try :) I think the masters will produce a trend showing the implementation of the AI's examples. I for one am looking forward to seeing that trend and the many explanations of strategic changes.

Leela: Chess22k, everybody should know there is an issue with the Bad Bishop in the e5 Classical Sicilian. You didn't solve this problem, and you undervalued the great space advantage both c4 and e4 gave me. The spatial advantage allowed me to efficiently transfer my pieces from one side of the board to the other. What good is having a Bishop on the board if it's unproductive? Too weak, too slow.

Google would have to be willing to do that, but it only took them four hours to train Alpha Zero whereas it took volunteers four months to train Leela, and Leela is only just over half as trained as Alpha Zero was. I would think Google one day might let this battle take place, but maybe not before they train Alpha Zero for another four hours... imagine its strength then!

I don't think so. This is because there is no INCENTIVE for google to do that. Deep Mind created Alpha Zero to show their prowess in ML(by beating a chess engine based on heuristics(stockfish)). Since Leela is basically a copy of Alpha Zero what is the point?

Jordan Fischer Leela wasn't trained by volunteers. She is trained by playing against herself. People on the internet play against fixed versions of Leela.

Just incredible... Maybe a really good positional player could find 14.Qe2 but for someone to find things like 39.Qg4 or even 46.Bc6... I love how complex these engines have gotten that they're not only tactical geniuses but also able to be so flawless in positional and long-term play. As you said at the end, how do you even improve as black?

39. Qg4 isn’t hard to find. I’m rated 1.4k on Lichess and while I didn’t find the move, I noticed the back rank issue and that mate was stopped by the Queen. So it’s a simple deflection. As for the other two moves, yeah, those are such weird positional moves to me. Moving the Queen to let your Knight move *four* times in a row to reach a better square? That just sounds so slow and silly, yet it worked perfectly. In terms of how black could improve, maybe there was some way to sacrifice the exchange on the c4 Pawn with the Rooks? To get Pawn + Bishop for a Rook, and activate your other Rook. I guess white can probably defend against it, I’m just a bad player I wouldn’t know how to improve. lol Black seemed to be making too many “nothing” moves as Jerry calls them though, maybe if it saw white’s long-term plan it’d have come up with something better, like a King-side Pawn break or something, no idea.

I did think of trying to get the knight from b3 to d5 but rejected it simply because it would take 5 moves to do so; I'd probably have pushed h4 immediately and gotten myself into trouble. I guess the lesson for me is to be a bit more patient :D Black didn't really have much to do so improving the position first seems like a decent idea.

Absolutely loved this analysis. There's nothing more satisfying than cementing minor pieces into impenetrable fortresses that restrict your opponent's movements. So nice to watch the progress unfold. At 7:50 did you consider crashing one of the two rooks into c4? You would exchange a rook for a pawn and a bishop and break open the c-file.

I tried putting that into Stockfish real quick and it just seems like it’s losing for black. After the captures black is just down material and doesn’t really have compensation. The open file is better used by white’s 2 Rooks than black.

More engine games, pls. The technology is really heating up with innovation and producing fascinating games. Esp. neural network games, but also take a look at the up and coming Ethereal engine (currently winning top spot in division 3 of TCEC). It seems really strong and elegant. Sees deep.

I really liked this video. These little quizzes are nice, it's not just 15 minutes "watch this next move" but encourages people to actually think about the position. Also I like the fact that you skip a lot of moves you seem to consider obvious or boring and focus on just a couple of positions. Keep it up.

5:50 Move 22. Maybe Black does well to sac the exchange by taking c4? I know that engines don't like being down material, but it comes with a pawn or two, opens up lines around White's king, and maybe even lets the dark squared bishop join in the fray by hopping back to d8 and then b6.

I thinking about 2 things: 1. Take knight when he is on c4, during reposition from b3 to d5 by the light bishop (Be5xKc4). 2. Give the rook for bishop and pawn to open it. For example i think about it when position is completly shut down (stockfish dont like this my thought for ~0.7 to ~1.5 point).

Jerry can you explain why the black team did not exchange sacrifice on move 22. Black does get the bishop and a pawn and soon the pawn on a4 falls. Wouldnt that have been better?

Because it doesn't. After 22. Rxc4, 23. Bxc4 Rxc4, white would have 24. Rxa5, grabbing blacks a5 pawn. If black grabs the rook on a5 with the queen, he hangs his own rook on c4 to whites queen. After 24. Qxa5 25. Qxc4, white both defends his a4-pawn and is simply up a clean exchange with a queen-side pawn majority.

Athinira good point. Then how about after 24.Rxa5 black replies with Rxe5 with the same idea that if black rook is captured then so will the white rook on a5. Another option is to prepare the exchange sacrifice with b6..just solidify a5?

7:50 -- In answer to your question on whether there's a way forward for black, my only thought is to sac the exchange after Rd3 with Rxc4, Bxc4, Qxc4. I don't think it can work, but it's all I have.

9:58 I think if you had explained earlier why Rxc4 wasn't working, then this "high class waiting move" of 30. Ra3 makes a lot of sense, transitioning to the exact same position, with the exact same inevitabilities, but with the a4 pawn protected (as a sidenote, the king wouldn't want to go to a2 if the a4 pawn could be sacrificed for). It's also important to note (and probably Leela's main reason for playing the move) that black is pretty much in strategic zugswang, and that not only is the rook move a slight improvement, but it is the only move that doesn't change the nature of the position or interrupt the responsibilities of the pieces at all, allowing white to lose a vital tempo. Losing this tempo in zugswang allows white to make the black queen in reality be the one losing the tempo, allowing a free 31. Qf1 which is proceeded by f4. 31... Qc5 was played instead of Qb6, because if 31... Qb6 32. Rd3, then the queen must go to a7, because after 32... Qc5, 33. Rd5 attacking the queen further improves the position as if it were just a better version of the previous position if the black queen wants to avoid losing a tempo. This tempo generated builds momentum for Leela to breakthrough optimally. It may seem like a small meaningless computer move but its fascinating to think how this is an integral part of the mechanism, and it beautifully leverages the fine balance of the position.

Turns out it was thermal shutdowns on the GPU because of over-heating. The GPU server TCEC rented doesn't have proper cooling. It was worked around with lower power limits on the GPUs late in Div 3 (when her 5.5/6 win streak began). She couldn't quite win enough once the hardware issue was addressed to still promote to Div 2, sadly.

@7:50 exchange sack the rook for the bishop and pawn. As whites rook is now on D3 and Blocks whites queens sight to protect C4 pawn. Earlier, king on A2 is NOT safe as the same exchange sack also works And black gets an intermezzo picking up the A4 pawn with check. 2 paws + biscuit for the nookie and a fawn pawn for black on the A- file, just saying 🤔

The whole line is actually still pretty fresh in human play, and (the in actual fact highly logical) 11. B:a7, eliminating a knight that can control d5, is a real "killer" to what was previously, and for a long time, thought to be quite an easy equalizing line, with the maneuver ...Nc6-a7(-c8-b6), for black: Jerry is correct, the idea to put on a freezing blockade of the light squares on the Q-side is a true menace for black. No real wonder Leela plays this way as well.

23...Rxc4 24.Bxc4 Rxc4 gets rid of White's fortress at the cost of a rook for bishop and pawn, and also adds pressure on a4. This might have been a way out, at least against a Human opponent

I think the most instructive move(s) here are 14 and 15 white. The lesson being; if you have pieces in fine position and no real plan of attack, invest moves into improving your poorly positioned instead of forcing a tactic.

Would 12 ...Be6 not be better instead of Qb6? What's that queen move doing, actually? It's only sitting there to get a knight-kick. Capturing the knight with ...BxNb3 next would never give white that supreme control over c4 and e4.

One improvement for black would be to play the Berlin defense instead of the sicilian. e5 is better than c5 because it helps the Bf8.

What about 22 ...Rxc4 move? You would get the bishop and the pawn for the rook, and a4 pawn will certainly fall next, but most importantly you would destroy white's strong structure on the queenside.

I'm a bit confused: Why would they be equipping a chess engine with high-tier graphics cards, like 1080Ti's? I would've assumed that you would want a high tier CPU with multiple cores, since the CPU is what deals with executing operations, and the higher operations, the better the chess engine.

I wonder if 14 ... Be6 was a mistake? Instead 14 ... Bd7? Black loses his good bishop but the pawn on a4 might be difficult to maintain if the piece on b5 is traded. Likewise, if a piece on d5 is traded, there's the possibility of pushing d6-d5 (even sacking the pawn) to give his black bishop some play and try to pressure the center files and a-pawn

I know you always talk about how good of a position white has at times, but you never really commentate or have anything to say about some of the general defensive moves and what they attempt to do for black in such a bad position.

At 7:58, instead of Black's retreating their Rook back, why not sack the exchange by Black Rook taking White Bishop to create an open C-file for Black's pieces (which also kills White Bishop's diagonal)? What am I missing?

It's really hard to find an improvement for black. SF suggests playing Be6 way sooner and prefers it on all of these moves: 9. a5, 10. Na7, 12. Qb6, 13. Raa8. However, looking up those lines after Be6 it seems they might all just transpose to the game position anyway. This might be a true improvement though: Instead of 12. Qb6, play Ne8. This is a nice maneuver: 13. Qf2 Raa8 14. a4 Be6 15. Nd2 Rc8 16. Kb1 Nc7. In this line black challenges white's strong ls-bishop on b5 with the remaining knight and lightsquare bishops should get traded. This seems to solve a lot of black's problems and interfere with white's idea of a lightsquare blockade.

They actually played the reverse of this opening in an earler round, however after the book moves: 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 immediately chess22k deviated and played 3. Bb5+ (result was a draw). So we don't know how Leela would have handled the position.

orochimarujes the took on B6 is hanging after which you really just exchanged a good rook to a bad one and black can finally activate its pieces really well with Qxb6, Bf6, Rf2 and the tables turned, now the white king is in trouble.

The huge problem is the passed part imho, black will probably have to give something up for that pawn, especially since white already controls that promoting square with the bishop...

Sometimes, it feels like that there is not way the computer would want to get into such a position to clamp down an entire side of the board. I mean, the "little" decision to take out the Knight doesn't seem like a spark to lead to such a position. I doubt any human being would ever come back with such a move, or even the idea of having such a position, especially created at that very moment with Bxa7.

At Move 22 for black, wouldn't grabbing the c4 pawn be a better move? Black could potentially have 2 pawns and a bishop for the rook!!

At move 25, when black is moving his king around why didn't black insted play a move like h3 or g3 to create a flight square? Does it really create that big weaknesses?

I guess you meant g6/h6 as you're talking about black. g6 creates a weakness on h6 and in some lines white's h4 hits harder when g3 is played. Example line: 25. ... g6 Rb3 Qc5 Qd2 Qb6 Ka2 Qd4 Rd3 Qc5 : This position is crushing. White can even take a time out, here Qxa5 and return to d2. h6 isn't a bad suggestion though. It's not obvious how white punishes it immediately (still white's position is at least just as good as in the game). But keep in mind, black has to play Kg8 eventually anyway at some point. Also the lightsquare bishop could later easily control the h7 diagonal to renew backrank mate issues. But backrank mate-stuff wasn't really a big theme in this game anyway (except for that cute little tactic with Qg4), so you might just be wasting your time with moves like that. Black's problem was that the q-side got completely locked down, so that there would later be no counterplay to white simply attacking on the k-side, and that is a longterm problem to which I don't see a solution to for black.

What's the use of a time increment if they are engines? Is it just more calculating? And if so, how do they choose how much time to spend calculating on each move?

Increment insures that no engine loses purely because of running out of time. The engines will always have at least the increment to calculate variations.

there are 5 divs on this tournament, the participants on the top 4 divisions are based on the previous tournament's standings. The last divisions which is division 4 is invitational and that's where Leela started in this season.

Why wouldn't black just sacrifice the exchange, taking the pawn on c4? Opens the queen side, bishop and pawn for a rook (and likely to win the other pawn). What am I missing in that position? Is that really that bad of a trade?

after 39 Qg4 isn't it possible for black to play 39... Rxd3? Sure, the black queen will be taken, but after 40 Qxh4 then Rxd8+ 41 Ka2 (Kc2 would lead to the white king being exposed and the black rooks becoming extremely active through Rcd8 which after Bxf4 would force the white king back to A2 anyway, which means the black e pawn in not free) followed by 41... Bxf4 and the bishop is defending that past pawn with one active rook on standby and another can be activated soon. I think this is a much better position for black in comparison to the one in the game, even though it's still unclear if Black can manage to survive. Ideas like playing R8d8 or Rf1 with f5 to connect both past pawns afterward and securing that pawn's advance is black's plan to win.

My favorite leela encounter in div4 was one of the very last games where with black she plays f6 and take shelter with the king in f7, what a bozo defense!
