ChatGPT and the suite of OpenAI projects (particularly Bing's new AI offering) have been in the news a lot lately and it got me wondering, what would happen if I asked ChatGPT to plan an itinerary in Paris? Would it work? Would it be amazing or terrible?
In all honesty, I found the results impressive. Granted the itinerary itself was obvious and impractical, but it wasn't the quality that impressed me so much as the interaction and the fact that it could spontaneously generate an itinerary at all, let alone an itinerary for Paris that was loosely sensible. Would I recommend following it? No. But is there a huge potential in tools like this for travelers in the future? Absolutely.
I also think that there are a lot of people in my related fields, whether creative or tourism, that still don't think of this as a game changer (whether threat or helpful tool). I don't have any answers myself, but it's something I'll certainly be thinking about a lot.

FAQ:
How long have you lived in France? Almost six years now, holy cow.
What do you miss most about ho- NACHOS
You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a "Draw My Life" video that explains a lot here: • Draw My Life
Where are you from originally? - Pullman, Washington - a small university/agricultural town near Idaho (and yes, the potatoes are amazing).
What do you film with? - I've made a lot of changes recently, but I try to keep my gear list up to date if you want to see what I use and buy some for yourself: bit.ly/JaysGearList
What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.
Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.
Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here: • Why I Want to Live in ...
Do you speak French? - Oui. • Un Jour en Francais (E...
Do you make money off RU-vid? - Ha, sorta. I wish. It took me over 500 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $5/mo to help me make better videos: / jayswanson
I don't trust this Patreon thing - can I just paypal you? - Here's my ko-fi if that's your thing (and coffee is your game): ko-fi.com/jayswanson
But I want to send you something tangible! - I do have a wishlist on Amazon, though it's a bit complicated with the international shipping situation. So instead people often drop off or ship things to the Peloton Cafe in Paris for me.
Thanks for watching!

I’m a travel advisor and there’s been talk in our industry of ChatGPT and AI “replacing” our jobs and I don’t see that happening any time soon, as you’ve demonstrated…there are so many better itineraries and guides out there if travelers want to plan their trips independently, such as writers and vloggers such as yourself. No need for an inaccurate and impersonal system that just draws from other text it finds online (it’s basically copying others’ writings but doing so without the ability to organize by location, travel distance, time, etc, as you’ve shown). Maybe in the future it’ll improve but I think it has a huge way to go and from what I’ve seen most people prefer travel advice that has a human, personal touch to it 😊

I'd definitely agree in the short term. I think it'll be fascinating to see how things go in 5-10 years. The main thing I remind myself, to stay sane at least, is that I only need a certain number of customers/patrons/supporters of my work to continue doing what I do. I don't have to take on the whole world. Something you'd think I'd already know, but a potentially disruptive technology like this helps me see it even more clearly. It helps it not feel like a threat.

I found this video amusing. It is hard enough to learn your way around a new city without having an AI program sending you back & forth across it in different directions multiple times. I well remember my first arrival when I refused to give into jet lag & hit the ground running. Decided I would get "oriented" by going on the bateaux mouches, after that it was time to take the Metro (just for fun) without having any idea of where I was going. I was so fixated on becoming famiiar with the city my first day in that I refused to stop for dinner & insisted we could get a piece of fruit in the street market & keep going. So far my popularity with the friend I was with was quickly waning. So I indulged in a stop at a bar. That mixed well with jet lag. By this time it was about 10:00PM & I suddenly had no more energy & needed to get to the hotel & my bed ASAP before I crashed & burned. How did I manage all of this? No idea. Young & clueless. If only I'd had access to something like you guide...... People should really get a guide created by someone who had a first time in Paris & has lived there as a citizen for a while. Much better than Michelin! ; - >

The ChatGPT itinerary chosen is IMO a very typical itinerary that tourists think they can do. They don't necessarily realize the distances and logistics that it entails. For those of us that know Paris its obvious you would change places around a bit to better organize your time or do it on multiple days. As you said it is doable, but just not in a very organized or logical way. One still needs to think it thru and not blindly follow ChatGPT, but it was a very good exercise (pun intended). Very informative Jay. This is a great video to demonstrate what not to do and how with a little bit of effort one can organize their itinerary oh so much better.

I also don’t want to jam so much into the day it’s not enjoyable. Now to map things out. But I like planning ahead so I can make the most out of my trip. The response from chatGPT will be only as good as one's prompt, like any good search prompt. Adding phrases like "high efficiency of time" or 'least walking distance", etc. may have made your experiment less frustrating and scattered. Remember the decades-old rule with computers, "garbage in, garbage out." Trying several prompts and screening for the best response would most likely be more useful. Loved this video, Jay! Great work!

My tip is to buy stuff from s/m and make your own baguette. Also using the bus lines is really the way to go, because you can see so much of this huge city without walking. And another tip: before your visit in the museums make sure they are open because there might be a strike.

Interesting vid. I've watched well over a dozen ChatGPT vids and feel one needs to differently phrase the question you did in order to have things in the same neighborhood. I've recently used ChatGPT regarding SEO to go back and change some of the text/titles of my vlogs that aren't getting the views some of the others do and find that there is some increase in the number of views. And I do agree about your postulation about both good and bad about working with and under AI. But for RU-vid creators, I think the most urgent, immediate concern is the court case next week that could remove protections from RU-vid (and most social media sites) when people get information from a video that they use and it causes injury, either to themselves and/or others. I think it could potentially destroy RU-vid, although their political lobbyists might be able to work out some sort of compromise. In any case, I'm going to keep using ChatGPT for a while to learn more about the pluses and minuses. Thanks for this video!

I, literally, first heard about ChatGPT at a conference in January and now I can't seem to get away from it. I think this video highlights something that seems to sometimes get lost in conversations about AI tech. It's a wonderful tool that can help us accomplish a task, but we still need to be involved in how what it comes up with is used or presented. Without human direction any AI tech is about as useful as a hammer or car or a computer or a paintbrush without human direction. Machine Overlord jokes aside, we control our technology - not the other way around.
@JaySwanson
@JaySwanson Год назад
For now for sure. I think that NYT article I referenced raised a good point (linked in the blog post I put in the description), that the danger lies in a chat bot being able to convince someone of something dangerous and to act on it on its behalf. The bot itself would never be aware of the damage it was doing, it's a tool, like you said, but it could still lead to some dark places. Definitely a good conversation to be having more broadly I think
@ProfessorBurlingame
@ProfessorBurlingame Год назад
@@JaySwanson Couldn't agree more. And, again, when the tool goes to dark places, as tools are sometimes wont to do, then it's up to us as the humans who make and use the tool to correct it. We're always responsible even when the tool has a "mind" of its own.

Hi Jay! Would you think about having someone edit your captions? I watch with captions often because I’m sometimes in a noisy environment and in this video every time you say Marais, RU-vid auto-captioned it as Murray. Not that any Deaf person watching this video would necessarily be confused, but it’s kind of crazy making to see that over and over when it’s such an easy fix. Thanks for listening, this video is great and you’re right, ChatGPT is a terrible travel planner.

I haven't had any desire to see what Chat GPT has to say about anything ever since I heard what the French have done with the homophone "Chat GPT." Your video shows perfectly, though, the places that I wish to avoid on a short trip. Conversely, the cumulative effect of your "20 in 20" videos has been to make me realize that a good travel strategy might be to make several short trips and just focus on a single arrondissement per trip. Like: "OK, I'm doing four days and three nights in the 13th," etc. That will give me focus and keep me away from the tourist traps. I've sort of rediscovered your channel recently; finances have prevented me from re-upping my patreon membership, but I plan to do so soon. Sorry! Thanks!

Though overpriced, first-timers who want that incomparable wow-I'm-in-Paris delight, sitting outside sipping hot chocolate at Deux Magots will definitely deliver the feels. Such a fun content twist to do ChatGPT (though it gives me mild anxiety too)!

I think that anxiety is being felt pretty broadly atm - you're definitely not alone

Great video! I'd rather buy "Paris in my Pocket" than use an AI to take me around Paris. 😊Wondering if that Sando shop will make your guide? It looked delish!

It absolutely will. Just gotta update the doc we're working off and it'll be in! 🥪

Seems like this app/guide is really gaining traction. Makes me think of Rick Steves, leveraging video content into guide publication.

Eh beh! That's a "chasing momuments" ChatGPT itinerary. I'm curious about that Japanese restaurant for lunch. When in Paris, I stay in the 2eme around Richelieu, so that looks like my neighborhood. I'll be back for a month this spring and have been noting the Asian places that I've walked past, but haven't yet tried. I enjoy your videos, and I've been going to Paris 1-2x/year since 2008 (except 2020-21 due to pandemic). I returned last May 2021.

Lots of great Asian cuisine up in the 2e, Rue Saint Anne makes it easy to find something to feed that craving

Chat GPT came up at work a lot this week, with teams trying to figure out how they can utilise it for projects. P.s the Dome of the Sacré-Cœur is my favourite spot in Paris! Counting down the days until I am there later this year 🥰

That was interesting. As a former travel agent, I still don't think people understand the importance of SOMEONE HUMAN helping plan your trip. Understanding the fine nuances like distance, their client's needs, tastes and personality, etc. (I also have many artist friends who are really upset about AI art, but that's another issue). Go rest your feet now, Jay. 😆😉

Hey! I am headed there with my in-laws and two kids. Would it be best I buy a 4 day train pass ahead of time or is it easy enough to buy it at a metro station once I am there?
@shinyshinythings

It’s very easy to buy passes at the stations.

Jay recently released an updated video on getting around Paris - you can check it out here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Qn4-ac0sPDQ.html If you're looking for information on regional trains across France it's best to visit SNCF's website directly, though you can buy tickets at the big train stations it's usually cheaper ahead of time.

I would like to visit with the theme of art in the forefront. Do you have suggestions for such a trip. Not only viewing, but also visiting impressionism history sites, urban and plein air opportunities, art stores, and on a shoestring because........artist.
