Aidan Coleman announces his retirement from the saddle live on Luck On Sunday, having failed to recover from a knee injury.
The 35-year-old suffered a fall at Worcester in June 2023 and has been battling to return ever since, undergoing several surgeries on his knee and a shattered tibia.
Coleman, who will possibly be best remembered for his association with the recently-retired Paisley Park, has undergone a lengthy rehabilitation process but has conceded he will not recover sufficiently to resume his riding career.

I partly have Aidan Coleman to thank for my love of horse racing. I visited my Grandad one Saturday morning back when I was around 18 years old and he was "studying form" and asked me if I fancied a bet on the nags. I had no idea what to do, or how to study form etc. Anyway, I saw a horse in the newspaper called "Flintoff" running at Haydock and as a cricket fan at the time I thought sod it I'll have that horse each way just for the namesake. It came 2nd at 66/1! it was such an incredible buzz, I know it didn't win but the horse ran a belter under Aidan at big odds and it was my first ever bet. I'll never forget watching that race with my Grandad. Great memories, I've been hooked on racing ever since. I'm gutted for Aidan that he's had to hang his saddle up early at the age of 35. How he got Paisley Park home at Cheltenham in the Cleeve Hurdle a couple of years back I'll never know SUPERB!!!. Excellent horseman! Happy retirement Aidan, all the best fella!

That was a shock, Aidan had to finance his own specialist rehab and physio to enable him to walk again. Wanted to give Aidan a hug after his voice started shaking about not now having a job. He is intelligent, tactful and articulate, there has to be a role for him somewhere in racing, surely?

Top man Aidan. A fantastic jockey in his prime and I think he’ll make a fantastic pundit. Comes across very well in this interview and has plenty of knowledge to pass on

Good guy is Coleman - always honest and very rarely found wanting at any stage of his career. Hopefully he gets something lined up ASAP - I think he would be a great racing manager for somebody or even do a nice gig in the media.

Such an interesting interview - the PJA should offer Aiden a paid role advocating against Sunday night racing. It seems no one apart from the gamblers want Sunday night racing as it puts to much stress on the horses (even the horses that do not race on Sunday nights are disturbed when the horses return from racing), and the stable staff and jockeys never get a day off racing. What Aiden said about summer jumps was valid as if a jockey takes off 3 months in the summer that jockey will lose a ride for an owner/trainer. So it means that jump jockeys basically have to work all year which is totally unrealistic if you want to avoid burn out. So brave about your leg - and I really wish you well with your physio.

I am a gambler, and I think that we have far too much racing, never mind Sunday evening. It will be Christmas day next.😢
@flower-ss2jt
@flower-ss2jt 5 месяцев назад
@@latchmere100 I should have been clearer, rather than people who gamble wanting Sunday evening racing, I should have made it clear I am referring to the gambling companies who want to maximise income by having 7 days of racing every week. If I had my way there would be no racing on any Sunday, except for P2P, and no racing on Good Friday or Easter Day, Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. That will give stable staff a rest.

Agree not one to knock a lad. But when Paisley was in his prime he was awful on him. Think he lacked the confidence to ride the best horse like he was best horse. You had Walsh who was the complete opposite even Barry they’d thrive on the big day
