This is what most people misunderstand. That Aikido is The Way of Bushido. In it originated with the Samurai Sword. Sword Hand, Sword Arm,Sword Body, Sword Mind, Sword Spirit. Just got my new Bokken yesterday. And it just feels good to hold. Thank you. Bruno Gonzales has great vids of the use of the sword with Aiki.

So... My understanding of Aikido comes entirely from my understanding of cutting. I took Aikido classes at a local dojo, on and off, for about four years of total training time. While I was training there I was working as a cook at a restaurant across the street from my dojo. So I would often spend an hour or two training, only to run to work and spend 6 hours cutting and cooking. Something about having the task of using a knife juxtaposed so immediately next to my aikido training, helped feed both disciplines. The reason I say this is because I realized that nearly every Aikido technique I learned used the same principals I was using with a chef's knife. A cut is nothing more than applied friction. Cutting with a blade, is the application of focused friction. On the other hand a river can cut through a continent while being miles wide. If you gave me enough time and enough sandpaper, I could cut my way through a wooden table with splayed open palms. It is precisely this open and gentle form of, "cutting," that I believe Aikido is entirely based on. Where a samurai might drag his blade, the aikidoka drags his open palm. Where a more militantly minded individual might cut a wrist, neck or other joint, an aikidoka will steer, twist and or torque it. Instead of cutting a man down, the aikidoka cuts down his balance, posture and intent to cause harm. While I'm sure my observations are elementary, it is Aikido's focus on the elementary that makes it so universal. which is why, to me, there is just something about learning the essence of cutting that feels like a key to the universe.

Very cool to see how the sword movement structure gave rise to the empty hand system. Very similar path for Xingyiquan (aka Hsing-I Chuan), where its empty hand system is based on the movements of the spear.

In many cases even more dangerous than a sword. It's not a blade (of course) but underestimating what a experienced practitioner can _do_ with a bokuto is what makes it (more) dangerous. Is misleading weapon in an expert's hands. Musashi is a good example.

Finally correct explanation of "mysterious" aikido movements. Yes, they all based on bare hand enemy attacking the swordman (samurai). The bare hand was probably peasant or similar. Bare hand tries to get hold on swordman's hands to stop the sword. That's why attacker's strong grip is usually required, otherwise not making sense in fistfight. Hold the grip or be killed. Swordman movements are to get rid of attacker's grip and distance with him to be able to use the sword. Medieval kill tactic to become modern sport. But somehow this aspects is not often communicated, so Aikido movements are looking like not making sense in modern fights.

Aikido originates from aikijujutsu and the latter originates from Aikibujitsu or Bujitsu. It's been ages since I realised that Aikido and Aikijujitsu have movements linked with Kenjutsu. Correct me if I'm wrong.
@airon3348
@airon3348 3 года назад
Not quite. Aikido has its technical roots in the Daito current of jujutsu. "Aiki" is a relatively modern concept cherised by Morihei Ueshiba that Sokaku Takeda incorporated into his jujutsu school name under the influence of the later and reverend Deguchi. This happened during his stay in Ayabe, at the Ueshiba's home (aka. "Ueshiba's Villa") in the Omoto compound (circa 1920). Therefore it did not exist previously as such. The original name of Sokaku's art was Daito Ryu Jujutsu (大東流柔術). Now, the Daito Ryu sword technique is Onno-Ha Itto Ryu sword school. Sokaku Takeda was a master of this art and he incorporated these techniques into his Daito Ryu. A classical example of this is the very first technique in the Daito Ryu curriculum _Ippondori_ which is exactly the same technique of the first kodachi _kata_ of the Onno-Ha Itto Ryu. However, Aikido does not contain any relation to Onno-Ha Itto Ryu. The Aikido sword techniques developed by Ueshiba basically come from the Kashima Shinto Ryu and were called "Aiki-ken" by Saito Sensei. The Aikido sword (Morihei Ueshiba sword-technique) is the one taught in Iwama, Ibaraki prefecture. A little example of the origin of the Aikido sword techniques here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-01L5zoUtt8Q.html

@@airon3348 but what about aikibujitsu, bujitsu and aikibudo?
@airon3348
@airon3348 3 года назад
@@artevix The term "Aiki-bujutsu" does not exist in classical Japanese martial arts and rather it seems a justification on the part of some to try to "give" more historical background to aikido. The term "Bu-jutsu" only means "martial tricks" and is a generic term that can refer to any classical current of Japanese martial arts. "Aiki-budo" was a term used by Morihei Ueshiba during the 1930s until shortly before the end of the Pacific War when Morihei was at its peak with his dojo the Kobukan. Tokimune Takeda also came to use this terminology for his Daito Ryu.

This makes me respect Aikido more. And even with Wooden Sword or a similar blunt object like a Broomstick, this could still be effective. I know Aikido gets alot of criticism and I certainly don't blame them. But perhaps Aikido really does shine with a medium length sword, staff, stick whatever. Arigato Gozaimasu for the demonstration.

@@AjaychinuShah Ninja blow dart? Presumably that's happening at night, in the dark, while my guards are drunk and sleeping at the guardhouse. Or perhaps the ninja was a woman who I allowed in my chambers, and my guard was down due to her intoxicating beauty. Samurai nunchaku? I wasn't aware they used that so much. If Samurai, then more likely they would use a sword. Those techiques are recorded, and have been taught and adapted for the modern era when it has become frowned upon to kill people. As you can see in the video, we have a beautiful, non violent legacy that we can continue to practice.
