Trained at this dojo in November 2017 with two of my friends from the UK. Just one session as we were travelling around northern Japan. Made very welcome by the dojo cho. Met Gen at the dojo, a Zen Bhuddist priest who took us on a private tour of an ancient monastery the next day 👍

What I learnt from doing Aikido was how angular my body was. In the search for a circle, I hit and continue to hit many bumps along the way. During Corona virus lockdown, I realised how important it is to fall properly. Maybe like life itself, when we trip and fall, better to know how to roll properly than to crumble on the floor.

A really informative video that shows a wonderful group of people learning and practising together, with mutual respect at all times. The dojo is magnificent, although I've never practised Aikido I used to do Judo as a teenager in London in the 70s and so I've seen a few Judo dojos. The Aikido family of this dojo look like they dedicate many hours to their art, they work hard and have fun together. It's a truly inspiring Aikido school you have there, congratulations.
@perrypelican9476
@perrypelican9476 4 года назад
Mark Donovan how does mutual respect make you able to protect yourself and family against an attacker who has no respect, who doesn't bow before punching you and kicking you violently. What is aikido for? Please explain how aikido teaches you to defend against an attacker. I only see learning to throw fully cooperating opponents who must put their arms in predetermined places being careful to not hurt anyone. It looks great and is very acrobatic and nice to watch but as a self défense thing, no.
@markdonovan1540
@markdonovan1540 4 года назад
@@perrypelican9476 that is a good question. Everyone will have a different answer. I can only say that for a person who has trained in a disciplined way how to control their movements, their balance and improved reaction speed and spacial awareness together with a non-aggressive mindset, yet alert and responsive; this kind of development will always be useful in any kind of conflict situation. I have personally avoided escalating situation by staying calm, yet being ready to act to defend myself. I also try not to put myself in situations where there is a significant likelihood of some kind of conflict. That in itself requires good awareness and reading of situations, so that you can avoid something before it kicks off. I haven't always got it right, and on a couple of occasions things got out of control, but I somehow managed to avoid serious injury to myself or the other person. Maybe I was just lucky. In my opinion, any martial training in a gym or club or dojo is always going to be a simulation; otherwise we would end up putting eachother in hospital or worse. Is one better than another when it comes to using it for real? That really depends on the situation and the person, but developing skills of movement, sensitivity and a warrior spirit (as opposed to aggressive reflexes) will always give a person a tremendous advantage in not just a conflict scenario, but for life in general. Which I think is what these people are about, it's more about developing good values and culture as a human being and not just single-minded kill or be killed mentality. If we have to fight someone for our life, then we do whatever we can do, and what will happen cannot be predicted. However, the best defense is to avoid that type of situation. Staying healthy and learning how to control your ego through many thousands of hours of skills practice etc. will undoubtedly make you a better person for any situation that life throws at you. Life is for living, it's short but it is also wide, so embrace the things that make you feel good in a wholesome way and that keep you healthy physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually (however you may conceive that to be). After that, you deal with whatever you have to deal with. Sometimes the attacker threatening your life is invisible or microscopic, like this virus. So it's not just about martial skills in the purely physical sense. Sorry, my answer was quite long, I just wanted to give you the best answer I could. I hope it helps in some way, even if you have a different opinion about these things, that's ok it's your choice. I wish you the best, stay safe and healthy and look after your family, friends and neighbours as best you can, or any stranger that you happen to meet that might need your help.

Mark Donovan don't worry about long comments. I appreciate you for taking the time to express yourself. I agree that aikido has positive aspects as you explained but most dojo's do not prepare students for street fights in any way. If the masters examined tbat to their students then that's cool but if they sell aikido to potential students by saying how good it is to defend yourself then it is very bad because it will give students false confidence and make them more likely to stay and fight than run away. The one that really worries me is their knife fighting training that is very close to totally useless because every attack is a cooperative one move with no recoil. Knife attackers do not stick the knife straight at you and intentionally miss so you can grab their wrist. They slice and stab repeatedly. In order to learn to defend yourself you must practice against an opponent who wants to hurt you and who does nit cooperate. If you only get used to fighting against opponents who cooperate then how can you ever be effective against a real attacker. The answer is simple. YOU CAN'T. The good dojo's are honest and either tell you tbat aikido like they teach it is nit for fighting or they include real life attack scenarios in the training, along with real sparring where both people want to beat the other. It's logical. You seem to think it's better than nothing. Well so is jogging or playing tennis. Teaching people techniques that do not work in real life fighting, but telling them that it is effective is MORE DAMGEROUS THAN DOING NOTHING. There is nothing worse than false confidence, thinking that you have skills to defend yourself when you don't. You will stand up to an attacker when that is the last thing you should do. The attacker will not attack you in any way like your opponents in training, so every strike will be something that you never trained to deal with. What aikido students must be told by their teachers is to run at all costs because you are not being trained to fight in any sense if the word.
@markdonovan1540
@markdonovan1540 4 года назад
@@perrypelican9476 yes, I totally agree with your comment about teachers being honest about the things they teach. I don't see anything dishonest in teaching or learning knife defence techniques as a skill, but to use it for real is obviously not what people have in mind. I too practised similar techniques over and over again, with proper hard nut people in a rough neighbourhood of London in the 80s and 90s, so I can understand your point perfectly. I'm not saying that it's better than nothing, I think you have misunderstood me on that. I was trying to say it's a different approach, and different goals also. I know boxers that were hard as nails and with years of fighting experience, yet they got stabbed in the neck. You cannot prepare for the unknown as much as you think. Even doing more "realistic" training can do the very thing you say is bad, namely making people think they can deal with a dangerous situation when they can't. That can happen to anyone, you can never ever underestimate your opponent. The two times I made that mistake I suffered for it: in one I was knocked out cold and in the other I suffered kidney damage due to multiple attackers who jumped me from behind. But we live and learn. I know of people I sparred with who died during full-contact sparring training, I know top instructors who got involved in a street situation and nearly lost an eye and an arm when a young wild, untrained youth produced a large sword and started slashing wildly. I know of people, friends of friends, that were shot and killed, stabbed and killed etc etc. But none of this has ever made me think there exists a method, a technique, a system to defend oneself in such situations. The best defence is simply not to be there, not to engage and lead a peaceful life. Practising Aikido or MMA or Krav Maga or Shaolin Kung Fu etc. all can provide the practitioner with many health benefits, I've always considered the self-defence aspect to be like a "side-effect". It's there, but it may or may not be effective. Each of us chooses the path we wish to follow, sometimes we will be challenged along the way, and this will either kill us or make us wiser, hopefully the latter.

Aikido is an art of peace and harmony within oneself and respect towards others. I like this martial art. Everything is circular, gentle flow, from a slow to fast movements with a centered awareness similar to Tai Chi Chuan. Both arts teach how to efficiently use a small amount of force to enable a woman or an elderly to effectively defend against a brute massively muscular and bigger opponent. Soft overcomes hard, the weak overcomes the strong concept.
@Jtheantagonist

Aikido is beautiful art but no way it is effective in real life defensive situation especially against a stronger opponent.
@markdeguzman6556
@markdeguzman6556 8 месяцев назад
@@Jtheantagonist Have you tried combat Aikido? Effectivity lies in the mastery of any martial art. I believe masters of Aikido like Morihei Ueshiba and masters of Tai Chi Chuan also have mastery of Fa jin and Chin Na which are effective against bigger opponents. Once a martial artist progresses beyond the choreographed "dance" or set of forms and postures and develop both agility and the ability to direct their energies in the right direction, their art will be effective against a bigger opponent who only uses brute strength. But ten years of disciplined practice may not be enough to reach Ueshiba's level of mastery because those masters in the past always had the opportunity to practice their art in real battle of life and death not merely engaged in sports or practice sessions with peers. Ueshiba serve the Japanese Army during the Russo-Japanese war, so he constantly trained with a warrior's mindset not a hobbyist's mindset.
