In 1989 I met at karate Nidan who requested to spar with me. I immediately did this technique on him. He was amazed. The fight hadn't lasted five seconds before he was thrown to the ground. The next week he and his son became my students.

My teacher discourages any up/down movement when doing techniques. However, when I am doing techniques as tori and my uke does not come around to face me when I enter and cut down then I often end up going to the other side of uke like the "Tohei" type irimi-nage. I personally feel like the Tohei irimi-nage uses more of a pulling effect at the end of the technique, which is not the best. I prefer to use the tenkan effect along with the connection of the arms of uke and tori. Great video!

what an interesting concept, opens up a real can of worms regarding what is "correct" form too, which is also interesting!

I started tai chi at 46, my instructor brought me into ki aikido at 49, he then retired ( still my tai chi instructor) . Swapped schools,new sensei, started again, achieve my orange belt last year and I've managed to train my rolls, solo drills, learnt the forms of 9 and 31 jo katas on weekly basis since we locked down here in the UK in march. I've started to struggle with it all now we are in winter as I need to train indoors. I keep hitting the piano ouch. Your videos are fantastic and given me much needed interest yo51 train so when we get back to partner training I'm going to be So centred they will be challenged. Thanks and keep them coming. I am trying for a black before I'm 60.

Good on ya! With rolling it's all about finding a shape with no corners that works for you body, and ensuring you have enough push or momentum to get you back on your feet and defer the force of gravity! :) good luck

@@AIKIDOSILVERDALE the breathing is difficult. Do you try to breathe out in one breath as you go from standing to point of lowest energy ( i tried different finishing points) ? Its going to take some practice.

another interesting disappearing iriminage was Noro sensei's 'flying iriminage' seen in this video - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dd19h_vkQPo.html

Anybody knew why was Master Tohei always sitting or seemingly wheelchair bound years prior to his passing in 2011? Nothing ever was mentioned about that. I’m rather amused coz he was such a robust sensei with his Ki mastery. O’sensei was often seen standing doing techniques right up to his prime but not Master Tohei. Hope someone could share here.

@@AIKIDOSILVERDALE Now that sounded clearer. Let me rephrase. “Master Tohei was often seen immobile, seated from the all those late photos of him taken. I’m curious if he had some major operations done to his legs due to accidental mishaps or natural ailments. I would not discount the fact old age was a contributing factor as most elderly did, that even a frail Ueshiba sensei was seen standing performing techniques up to his death but not Tohei sensei.” By the way, are you from Ki society and has close affiliation with them? If not, it’s alright. I just need someone who knew them and could relate and share. Thanks.
@AIKIDOSILVERDALE
@AIKIDOSILVERDALE 3 года назад
@@BoyG10 No contact with the Ki society. Not even really a believer in it as a concept really, but have huge respect for Tohei as he was a great martial artist, not just aikido but a decent Judoka too. He suffered a terrible bout of pleurisy as a child which no doubt left his respiratory system weakened, so I suspect that is what caused his disability in later years. His death was reported as due to "inflammation of the lungs" so likely pneumonia or similar. With regards to O sensei still practising in his later years, you are mistaken. He died of liver cancer which left him very frail for a long period of time.

Without athletic ability and speed, you won't make this work against a real attacker.
@AIKIDOSILVERDALE

Did you actually watch the video?? Know, the part in the intro when I say "this is more a demonstration of principles than a demonstration of the technique"?
@gregorious123
@gregorious123 3 года назад
misses the point entirely. Iriminage like this is a reactionary movement where nage enters into the attackers space after they have initiated the attack. In ki aikido there is a principle of put yourself in your partners place, in other words swap places or get behind the attacker. A calm mind can actually react quicker than a speedy attacker. That takes years of cultivation though. But that's the goal of shin shin toitsu 心身統一合気道. To unite mind and body. Only then do you see the relativity of attackers speed.
