I feel like the biggest problem with many martial arts is they don't train you to read an opponent or react. Too much of the training is based around "you do a roundhouse at my head, and I'll respond." there MUST be sparring, so you can learn how to react quickly to unpredictable moments.
@AIKIDOSILVERDALE
@AIKIDOSILVERDALE Год назад
Completely agree peter, we use resistance and sparring as part of our regular training - we are lucky to have experienced people from Boxing, BJJ, Wing chun, TaeKwonDo and Muay thai in the club so we get to mix it up and se what works in what situations (and for who of course, as everyone has to find their "go to" solutions under pressure). Appreciate your comment

I think the reason there are so few defence against kicks in Aikido is because not many Aikidoka are ever taught how to kick! tis is great and simple to implement

I think this is the 'missing' piece in Aikido practice. We learn how to deal with various punching and grabbing, but what about kicking? Just last week I had this conversation with my sensei, since in our dojo we have some shodans with black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and myself I'm doing Karate too, so we talked about practicing some techniques to deal with kicking.... and... of course now we're experiencing Lockdown 6.0 in Melbourne! So we have to wait to put this into practice.... so this video is very interesting as a starting point on how to neutralize the kicking.

@@ocaikiclub2859 Not always possible logistically in some countries, but our point is valid - all arts should have a functional balance of skill I think

Also, what do you do against say, a wing chun practitioner who'll do a front kick and a punch at the same time?
@AIKIDOSILVERDALE
@AIKIDOSILVERDALE Год назад
It would of course depend upon the specific situation, reach of the opponent, and where their balance was unstable, but as a former Wing Chun practitioner I'm a great fan of the Lau Gerk leg catches, again IF appropriate. For someone with a longer reach (which is often the case for me as I'm hobbit sized) it maybe be simply changing range and using a leg lift to deflect the strike and try to take the opponent offline. These things are hard to say as there can be so many variables. Thanks for the question, interesting stuff!

THE AIKIDO principles are NOT narrowed to those 'basics' alone. Steven Segal (as an example) uses various other MA forms with his basic AIKIDO style practices. time 3:30 as another food for thought

Aikido is an misunderstood martial art

and part of the reason is how it is misrepresented by many that teach it, also the lack of technical ability 'at the top" especially in japan and the USA
@antalantal2366

That's very good for explaining but, if your purpose is also training for self-defense, I hope you are also dedicating time to practicing more committed and realistic attacks.
@AIKIDOSILVERDALE
@AIKIDOSILVERDALE 2 года назад
This was obviously VERY slowly demonstrated for the purposes of the video, as I said several times. TBH we don't do much of this because if someone kicks higher than the waist most of the time its quite easy to avoid, but we do practice low kicks, they are much harder and doing a "technique" of any kind against them is much harder, we train them more just to have them in our arsenal.

Must admit that he seems like a great Sensei, but in reality it will never work. I did ninjutsu for 5 years and was destroyed by a muya thai boxer. That’s why I switch to Thai boxing and never looked back. One of the advantages of Thai boxing is we get conditioned. Nevertheless aikido is definitely an interesting art. 🙂🙂🙂stay safe my friends 🙂🙂🙂 Would also be interesting to see how you would defend from fake kick
@AIKIDOSILVERDALE
@AIKIDOSILVERDALE 2 года назад
Thank you, and he is! Did you watch the entire clip? He clearly states against an experienced kicker more of these are ambitious at best, but that sometime people do swing a kick at you, especially if untrained and then there are often options. This video was more about the fact that most modern Aikido dojos no longer teach kicking or defence against kicking whatsoever which seems crazy. Have another watch, all the way through LOL :) Thanks for commenting.

yeah, dont understand why aikidoka just wont give up, they always look for the "missing piece", but they dont understand that there are no missing piece to begin with, entire aikido scene is a cult for people who dont cut it in judo

Well done for the most incorrect comment on this video so far. 1. This channel promotes cross training, and the improvement of all arts not just Aikido 2. Aikido has its roots in Jiujutsu, as does Judo, so you could argue judo is just a sport version of an actual fighting art. 3. The "entire scene" shows you know nothing about the current state of Aikido. Sensei Dunken and many like him around the world are part of the new generation of Aikidoka that have been changing the way the art is constructed and changed for the last decade. As they say above, you and your big mouth should show up to one of their dojos - I'll come along and film it for free! I love people that make comments like this, when they know there is zero accountability. If you are going to vent your anger at something, at least provide evidence of your own skill level, for all we know you could be just taking a break from your homework ...
