I truly love Andrew Gouches Bass playing for years now and thought of doing a transcription of this astonishing piece of music, where Andrew Gouche got the most out of this classic Chaka Khan tune as Musical Director.
Fast Gospel Runs, effortless switching between Slap and Fingerstyle Playing, great unisono lines with the full band/horn section, huge sound with his 6-String MTD which is tuned one wholetone lower, just fyi. I tried it on my Yamaha, it basically works but needs some practice and thinking about certain finger positions to get the fills/runs on point.

This is Gouche's arrangement of the song h did when he was musical director for Chaka Khan. It is a great arrangement and I'm sure most of the R&B and Gospel bass players have learnt his bass part or at least taken a few licks from it.

Spectacular! Man I wish I could play like that. I'm actually going to take a little crack at some of it. I estimate that six second sequence between 0:18 and 0:24 should keep me occupied for about 2 years. Maybe more... 😞

Yes, it`s a nice gospel type of run which you can find in many variations - At least the harmonic concept behind these fills is (kind of) easy, cause it's just based on the pentatonic scale but played with a lot of musicality. Just imagine that working some hours on this short fill (starting slow, understanding the concept behind it, messing around with different keys) will also push your abilities for playing such fills in general over any other song.

Hey Adam, its quite some time ago, if i remember correctly theres just a little compression through the diamond bass compressor. The Yamaha Bass has a knob for scooping out the mids, which i also used. Regards

Hello! Great playing 💪 I'm looking for new bass right now (I'm session musician) and I would like to ask you is there a lot of sound postproduction/outboard preamp/EQ etc here? The B string sounds really great - powerful and tight. Whole bass sounds very even. I'm really impressed. Thanks!

Hey Kosma, thx! I can't remember the exact signal chain and i also sold this bass a while ago, which i regret, because you are right, it had a very good B-String and was even across the whole fretboard. As i can remember, there was some compression involved mostly i boost the lowend a bit but nothing drastic, that would change the natural character of this instrument. The Yamaha BBNE 2 can be a great session instrument - If you want to purchase something cheaper you could also watch out for the Lakland 55-02 Skyline Series and search for one with an ebony fretboard - These go around 1400 Dollar i think and with the ebony board they kind of sound similar. I tend to use Fender 5-Strings nowadays because i can get more growl out of it. The typical Yamaha Sound is somehow 'nice' and always clean but cant get 'dirty' if you know what i mean. Regards

I got to give it to you. You are very good.... Understand there's nothing wrong with being a copy CAT, as long as you're coping the right cat. Andrew developed this style and shared it with everyone. To be truly grate, one must be unique. I will end it by saying this. You've got the it factor. You are a beast with that guitar.

Nice playing , but I think Andrew overplayed that tune and every other one during that time period like crazy. He is a church guy so it probably wasn't Coke . Maybe just the "Holy Spirit" LOL Seems to me he was in that band strictly as a showcase for himself. I was feeling for Chaka, she was really having to fight hard to keep up with that. My guess is that is the reason why she fired that whole band. For me, Melvin Davis is a much more musical fit for Chaka's music.

Cant remember exactly. I tend to switch back and forth between different brands but mostly i use nickel strings. I love the RXN5B from La Bella, but also the Daddario EXL and the DR Pure Blues Strings ... They all sound good ;-)
