After watching chevahaulic ( • air dryer for air comp... ) and his video on drying air for the compressor using an old AC condenser, I found this Kenworth truck condenser and went to town.
I added an 18lt drop tank to catch the water and away it went. So far so good.

That looks like the Cadillac of systems. If you don't mind an observation. The section of compressed air starting at the compressor and ending at the top of the radiator contains: 1) the hottest air, 2) air with the most moisture, 3) up-hill movement. That section needs a trap at its lowest point (down near the BFP). I believe that while it is running and especially when it shuts off, condensed moisture in this section will move downward and collect against your backflow preventer. Based on seeing your, I plan to make some changes to mine as I recently upgraded my compressor. I do another video to illustrate the changes.

That's a smart idea. Never really thought about the first pipe but it makes sense. I'll see what I can put together to include a drain on the upwards pipe. Thanks :) I love adding new things to the shed and setup. He who dies with the most tools......

Wonderful setup! I plan to build one, thinking of changes: - fan(s) on the radiator hooked to motor power (as others have said), muffin fans should do it. - radiator is somewhere cool. - a clear bowl moisture trap, either before or instead of the catch tank. - add a drain hose to a plumbing drain, bucket, or outside

Great ideas. That would work brilliantly.

Hi Stephen, niece and neat set up. One comment I have is that all lines need to fall away from the compressor head and be able to drain off at the lowest point, otherwise condensate may run back to the compressor when switched off and pool on the finger valves or head and cause corrosion. one of those cheap water/air separators with a glass bowl directly on the outlet line will show up any condensate that tries to run back to the compressor. it does nothing for the air going pout of the compressor but catches the water trying to run back to the head.

I found mine on eBay. Brand new for a Kenworth truck. Maybe call a large truck parts company up and see how much they are from them. Make sure the bottom pipe/outlet is at the lowest point. A lot I saw have both pipes half way up the sides and that to me didn't make sense to help the water drain.

Nice setup,I know a thing or two about airconditioning, you'd get better heat rejection and a quicker temp drop across the coil if you added a fan to the condenser coil wired to start and stop in sync with the compressor you wouldn't need anything powerful just something to push some air across it and you'd most likely find the moisture would condense quicker and boost the efficiency of your setup.

Awesome build, very neat and clean. Would you happen to have a part number for the condenser? I like the way the inlet and outlet are in the same location. The ones I've found are either not located close to each other or are a funky type hookup that would be difficult to connect to.

I did a quick serch on eBay and got this. Very similar to mine. www.ebay.com.au/itm/1999-2000-Kenworth-C500-Truck-New-AC-Condenser-/200479264031?hash=item2ead7ecd1f:m:mwgbhefWgkrbsWoRvdxfbZA

Just type in Kenworth Truck AC condensor and it will bring up a lot of them. Try and get one like mine that has one round pipe going through the whole thing. Not from a pipe/reservoir to blade type tubing as I don't think this would be a strong. Round is better in my mind. You will know what I mean when you see it.

I just did a search on eBay and found it. As long as it’s similar design, it won’t matter what model it is I suppose. I think the Kenworth truck model is T908 T940 or T604. AS long as the pipe starts at the top and finishes at the bottom in a continuous pipe, it should work fine.

Ok, an update, the little rubber hose in the inlet side of the condenser was not good enough. I was doing some spray painting and after about 10 minutes of constant compressor running, the hose failed. I took the fitting to a welding shop and they made a connection out of some aluminum bar stock and welded it to the fitting. No more rubber hose to get hot. I kind of knew it wouldn't last lol.

Nice project and very much like what I want to do for my everlast plasma cutter. Yeah, using rubber hose on the hot side of things is never good LOL.
@MarkSchuster-ym3iy

Stephen Simpson they make rubber hose that has reinforced grading. You can buy it by the foot. Instead of directly connecting hard pipe to the compressor, I used a 1 foot piece of this as it absorbed vibration. The vibration carries in the hard pipe and say you have your pipe mounted to a floor system. Well that just adds to the noise in that room. Break it with a short piece of reinforced rubber tube and it helps. My large compressor is a 5hp 80 gallon son born . It's quick recovery but it's fairly loud, I kept that compressor. Around 185 pounds I had that hookup for 10 years with no failure

Hi Mark, Thanks for the reply. After I had the fitting made, I attached the braided hose to it so still has a soft connection. Its been perfect since then :) I have also since this video, made a sound proof box with fans etc and egg shell acoustic foam. So quiet its insane. I can go outside the shed when it is running and not hear it. Perfect.

Do you lose air volume running it through the little tubing?
@stephensimpson5283
@stephensimpson5283 5 лет назад
Not that I notice. I do a bit of spray painting and don't notice anything. I think because it is going through the condenser before the main tank, it doesn't seem to matter. If it was after the tank then maybe it would but it would work as it is supposed to. :)

It looks like a nice and tidy setup you have there Stephen, I have the same TradeTools compressor as yours did you set it up for spray painting ? l
@stephensimpson5283
@stephensimpson5283 7 лет назад
Not really but it will be doing some eventually. I set it up for my air tools and thought I might as well set it up to get rid of the water if I can. I have done a little bit of spray painting and it seems to work really well. Not a drop of water.

On the fittings, found atc.ca/pdf/atc/Fitting_Crimper.pdf and truckair.com/catalog/2008PDFs/013-Fittings08.pdf. There are male insert to flare adapters for a few $, links below. Guessing a single tube type condenser is better than a parallel flow type for condensation? Easiest to find condenser is a T2000 condenser, equivalent of Kenworth 486-684-5008. One page shows fittings as "Inlet #8 MIO, Outlet #6 MIO". MIO (Male Insert O-ring) mates with FIO. #6 is 3/8" OD tubing, 5/8" thread size. #8 is 1/2" OD tubing, 3/4" thread size. Male insert adapter to flare: #6 partdeal.com/santech-adapter-3-8-in-no-6-male-insert-o-ring-to-male-flare-mt1385-by-omega.html. #8 partdeal.com/santech-adapter-1-2-in-no-8-male-insert-o-ring-to-male-flare-mt1496-by-omega.html.

The condenser I found has round pipes all the way through. Others that I see go from the inlet to a collector type pipe then into blade shaped pipes covered with cooling fins. I am thinking that the round pipe throughout would be stronger for pressure than the blade type? I'm not saying it won't work but maybe hunt a bit more for one similar to mine. They are out there. I've found several on eBay since I did my setup. Those fittings though, what a great find. Well done!

Yep, Already done. There are two of them further along the delivery airline. Never had a drop in them which is perfect. I moved the compressor position 90 deg and re-did the hoses. Made a few long drain hoses so I could drain each tank. I always get water out of the little tank but get nothing out of the main compressor tank. Simply amazing system.

I found it on eBay. I just put in a search for a Vehicle A/C condenser and found it. Try Kenworth Air conditioning condenser T908, T940, or T604. As long as it has an exit at the bottom so the water can run out at the lowest point. Works a treat. I'm amazed at the amount of water that comes out of it and my main tank is still dry.

It can be a smaller one. I went with this size as it increased my air capacity a bit as well, oh and it looks cool on the wall lol.
