In this video, I address that Air Force and military recruiting is down. But I want to tell a story that hopefully provides motivation or inspiration for those who are on the cusp of joining the Air Force or military but are afraid of the struggle or hard times you may face.

I’m currently enlisted. One of my sergeants told me his philosophy is that people shouldn’t complain about something if they aren’t willing to put themselves in a position to eventually change said thing. That stuck with me so that despite whatever “hard” I come across, I remember the vision and end goal to get me through it.

That concept does not work when you have Petro Dollars. You can't fix anything no matter what rank you have when you fight for Petro Dollars. Our fraud based economy ensures the US military is a dirtbag meritocracy. You can only change the US military from outside now. It's just a dirtbag meritocracy fighting for a fraud based economy.

Loved comment! You and I are in the same boat I feel! My recruiter spent an hour with me and even ended his time with his honest feedback, I'm over thinking. I'm leaving all the other great talking points out here but, he is correct in his read of me. I want to set myself up as an older recruit with the certainty I crave to commit long term (Career); no easy decision, and fact being this the first real decision I'll ever be making in life. Hesitation warranted'ish 🥲 I'm such a late bird in life. I made some goals this passing summer and committed to my dreams, I became written in Arabic, Hindi, Braille, ASL-500 signs, Russian. I know now for a fact language is a passion and perhaps gift I've been sleeping on. I decided to revisit other study areas I feel will aid in my goals inside the Air Force... I'm astonished by what I was capable of this summer. I'm about ready to take the step and join. Honestly, with the advice, philosophy, explanation by my recruiter; the Air Force IS the job place, coming in with a specific job (Which I had) only limits me as I might be capable of so much more (I have learned this summer), that much I've learned 2022. I understood that days after the convo and it sparked in me this pursuit to inventory my knowledge, sharpen and add to it, and add myself to a huge family filled with opportunity I've always dreamt of. It'll be hard, challenging, filled with tests I imagine, but I know now I want that. And the benefits of meeting like minds... I watch every graduation and I cant wait. Sounds like you do too lol. Nice reading your comment today, ty and wish you well; fellow over thinker 🙃 This channel is a GEM! FACT!

I’ve got this feeling most of the time. I graduated high school in 2018 wanted to do something else and ran away from it. Personally, I just feel like I’m out of options and I’m stuck and this may be the only way out for me as a person to succeed. I’m very introverted, I suppose fear of the unknown is what really sets in my mind and scares me to join.

I joined in October 2019. I have just now finished my year of training at DLI and I can comfortably say it was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I wasn’t sure I was capable of it to begin with and honestly there were several times when I didn’t think I was going to make it. No matter what your your doubts are, you are capable. Find a path. Find someone to lean on. I know that without my closest friends that I’ve made over the last year, there’s no way I would have made it to the end.

I think you're absolutely right that people are tending towards the easier jobs, not that these people are lazy but not as many people seem to care about challenging themselves anymore. I've had some of the most laid back good paying jobs where I essentially sent a couple emails a day pertaining to engineering and that was the job, but I dreaded going to work everyday because I knew there was no challenge in it, mind numbingly easy. That's why I'm working on commissioning with the Air Force rn because I want the challenge and responsibility.

Awesome video sir 💯 I’m thankful for your content. It reminds me of my childhood & not understanding why my father was so hard on me. He was extremely physically hard on me & extremely emotionally hard on me. I had so much anger & resentment for a long time. But one day, my eyes opened & my perspective changed. My anger & resentment turned into feelings of gratitude for my father’s tough love. Life is extremely difficult & painful. The “Hard” tough love just gave me inner resilience & equipped me with the tools to handle a hard life. I’ve never ran away from “Hard” however, I did run away from the USAF since I was in high school. I almost joined when I was 18 but I lacked maturity. I’m 38 now & just applied for the Oklahoma Air National Guard yesterday. I’d rather live with “Hard” than live with regrets.

Good stuff Jody, your videos have been a good inspiration for my process. I have a medical issue that I've been trying to get a waiver for and everything I've seen and everything people have told me is that I won't get in. I pushed and pushed until finally last week Thursday I got to go to MEPS and I got a high enough score to get any job I want. I then took my physical and passed everything with 1s. Now I'm still waiting for my waiver and approval from a surgeon general but I'm not giving up. I've taken the easy street for the last couple years and it's left me feeling empty, I want something more. I want to provide service before self, sharpen my integrity and above all things become excellent in all that I do. The core values of the air force rang loud and true to me. I'm not giving up, I'm going to keep pushing until the air force tells me to stop and even then, I'm going to go further. Fly, fight and win!!

Jody, excellent video and advice. To get promoted ... do NOT think about promotion ... but work HARD, do the absolute best, always give your boss more than asked, understand your unit's mission, keep learning on the job, be respectful to others, be the sharpest Airman, be 100% reliable ... then you will be recognized as an outstanding Airman and get promoted. True. Joined 1981, retired 2002. The only thing making my career worthwhile were the challenges I undertook. They changed me as a man. I carry those successes to this very day. Air Force Supervisors: Challenge your troops! Give that E-4 responsibilities an E-6 normally has with an (alternate) additional duty (with supervision, of course). Younger troops: You want to grow? Then, during deployments volunteer for greater responsibilities. ALL: Learn your craft, know your history. Your AFSC wasn't established last year - there were decades of troops serving before you - what technology, weapons systems, policies, procedures did they encounter? What's changed since then? And, why? It's relevant to your culture, which directly relates to the job you do today. Finally, great post JodywithaWhy. Much continued success, and much respect to all currently serving!

The pay is comfortable, the job is easy, but I’m going to talk to the spec warefare recruiter this week about becoming a sere specialist. I guess what I’m trying to say is easy street is nice, but not very fulfilling! Find something hard that you enjoy and you’ll live a fuller life

This is such a motivational video thank you. I’m currently a TSgt in the Air Force with ambitions of commissioning someday. Hard work is truly the key to success! I’m reminded of the Pareto principle that says that roughly 80% of outcomes come from 20% of causes. Meaning just 20% of your efforts result in 80% of your outcomes in life.

Hello, I hear you completely. I'm a 31 year old PE teacher in Tokyo. My whole life in Japan has been comfortable and rewarding but very complacent. I have a BA and an MA but I feel like I haven't found a passion yet or something thats a challenge enough. I'm looking to join OTS and hoping I can do the whole process from JP before heading back to the US . I really appreciate your videos, they've been greatly informative and made me make the final desicion. I'm in the best shape of my life and I feel like I don't want to let this opportunity pass. Thank you sir.

Great video! You hit the nail right on the head honestly. I'm 19 right now and im looking at enlisting soon hopefully. Right now im debating on the Army or Air Force. It really hit my when you said we keep trying to do something easy rather than hard tbh. My mindset has been go Air Force and have a better quality of life overall but promote slowly (so ive heard), or go Army which is a bit more challenging than the Air Force and promote somewhat quicker (again so ive heard), but have a lower quality of life.

I completely agree with this sentiment. The number 1 reason im getting out after my contract ends this year is actually because in my experience the military is too easy and isn’t challenging enough. In my opinion it’s structured in such a way that it rewards mediocrity as long as the minimum requirements of the individuals job is met. It almost feels like the organization wants people to just mindlessly do their job and be a cog in the machine and not aspire to do the most and become the best version of yourself. Because if that happens you will realize you can make so much more in the civilian world. It needs people to shut up and color or else the wheels don’t keep turning. In a way I feel like the military is holding me back. Just my two cents 👍🏽 good video brother

I'm enlisted as a reservist right now. I enjoy watching your content since it broadens my Air Force experience. My recruiter called me and told me that I could get either an admin job, a maintainer job, and a medic job. I thought to myself, "I didn't choose to join the Air Force job to take an easy path. My Army reservist friend said that he took admin because it was the easiest, and I had no intention to going that route (though I still respect my friend)." I went with the medic job because my recruiter said, "It is a hard job, but it is a rewarding one." My tech school is harder than BMT, and maintaining readiness has its issues that I'm wrestling everyday, but I do not regret choosing the hard.

Thank you for this video. I have been struggling to lose this last 10lbs to qualify. I lost over 40 got to my weight they wanted me at and they pushed it back again cause they measured my height wrong then went back in did a measure again and they corrected it. I’m at a plateau and was lost because the army measured me and so did navy but the airforce has a hold on me since I was a little girl. Never wanted anything as bad as I want this, it’s hard but that end goal never went away. I was always hoping I could get taped to qualify but I can definitely see the challenges the goal comes with and never lose sight of it. Thank you!

Love your videos I never comment but I had to this time. I joined the AF last yr at the age of 39. And I can say I was scared to death of BMT. Not bc of the yellin and stuff. I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to keep up with the younger generation. Shoot I’m almost 40! But I knew I had to do it I had no choice. And to my surprise it wasn’t as “hard” as I thought it was going to be. The younger people encouraged me as I encouraged them. They called me “momma bear”! Bc of my life experiences I could share things with them and help them see things from a different perspective. So I would say BMT was a great experience for me. Yes, there were hard moments! But we got through them. Now I’m stationed overseas and I’m enjoying it this far. I will say I wish the military got paid more.! My checks look real sad! And it’s heartbreaking we preparing to fight for the country if need be! Yea cola has definitely decreased a lot I heard and being overseas you need that bc everything is more expensive. If I had any advise for anyone it would be, Just do it!!! What’s the worse that could happen? You have nothing to lose, but so much to gain! Don’t be afraid go 10 toes down! Do your research also don’t take the recruiters every word bc they do lie! And get everything in writing!!!

You have touched on some great points. I agree people do want the easy street, but the Military is behind on incentives and compensation for the military workers. McDonals is a more attractive option for new recruits in terms of money and benefits. Bottom line Military needs to stop calling civilians “too weak” or “undisciplined” enough to join. Their job is to make people want to join and insulting your potential recruits won’t work. This is coming from someone who has been in for 10yrs Air Force.
