In this video, we will discuss how much pay military members really earn in 2024. A lot of people think the military is poor, and don't receive good pay, but I will prove that's wrong.

23 year old, no drivers license or skill, no job experience, lost to what to do in life, have an associates degree in IT that I haven't used since I lost community college, and trying to work off the pounds. The Air Force and/or Space Force sounds like a good way to change my life around, but that could be my emotions calling. I want to pay back my parents for not giving anything back to them, but the trip away from people you stayed your whole life is a tough move. I appreciate this video's existence.

Since your comment really resonated with me and my own life, ill put my two cents here. Ask yourself why 7 times. Why do you want to join. Answer that and ask why again, and again. Really get to the root of your desires to what you want to do. And if you can answer that, just take the leap of faith brother. Ik youre trying to lose weight but really start the process by walking into that recruiters office. Change all those “wants” into something you will actually do. Im a 24yr old guy whos about to ship out on april 30th and your dilemma sounds exactly like mine. I wish u the best of luck man

I mean, I mean no offense but having a license and a job was kind of the basics when I was growing up to prepare us for tge real world. Like I was talking to my coworker the other day and he was telling me kids are encouraged to bring their parents in on their job interviews. Not like wait in the lobby or in the car but actually sitting in on the actual interview. Same damn room. I mean I get it, different generations have their own thing but dang.
@cassettecobra3848
@cassettecobra3848 3 месяца назад
@@user-fm1zz4vi9s Yep, its really embarrassing for my generation. I was born in 2000. I really wish I was born in 1981 instead so I could grow up to be independent, grow up with video games, and make good money before everything went downhill. My brother had a license and a job before he went to college. I was one of those shut in kids with parents who didn't push or force me to do more due to being neurodivergent.

Use every benefit you can to set yourself up for success when you get out. I know too many people who say they regret joining the Air Force and that it didn’t help them, but they never used the VA home loan, never contributed to their TSP, didn’t go to school while they were in and weren’t going to use their GI bill

Great video. I joined at as an old man 38 year old non-citizen E3 four years ago to do one 4 year enlistment to get my benefits and citizenship and dip out, but I've extended as a first term airman and plan on staying in longer just cause the benefits, medical, travel, compensation, discounts/free premium credit cards adds so much value for my family. Not to mention my job at my base is the cushiest position I've ever had. If you take all the benefits and pay into account it would be more than my previously stressful job that I worked for over a decade. If I could start over and was fortunate to be born in the great US of A I wouldn't even bother with college and join a military branch right out of high school.

My only advice to the younger military folks just recently joining is do not hesitate to go to sick call if you are hurting. that was my biggest mistake while i was in even though i was hurting i never went to sick call because toughness was always taught and also i was afraid it can hinder me from getting promoted. Wonderful video, as I almost graduated college and will be joining as an E3, and will get TA for my Master's Degree. Based on your video I will earn around the equivalent of 70K a year. Joining the military will allow me to marry my fiancè, get my MA, learn some skills, save for retirment, be indipendent and save some money. If you are smart with your money, its definitely a great career choice even as a college graduate.
@Jodywithawhy
@Jodywithawhy 5 месяцев назад
Not giving marriage advice, but that $70K will feel more real once you’re out of the dorms. Some people don’t like the logic I used in the video because they count the dorms and dining facility as free, which means their base pay is the only one that counts. Getting married allows you the privilege to move off base and collect the additional incomes. Good luck on your journey and thanks for the support.

Yes, many people forghet how hard is to get a decent job these days, even after you graduate college with internships. The military is a more stable career, and in some AFSC you have a better work/life balance than some civilian careers. I strongly believe that it can lay the foundation for your future, and give you a point of reference and leverage if you ever plan to transition into the civilian world after vs going directly as a clueless 22 yrs old with little work experience, no discipline and no real salary and independence backing it up.

Thank you for the video. I was an AF civil service person who in now retired. I remember about 15 years ago a Tech Sargent in the AF left after 10 years to be able to "provide more for his family." He got a GS-09 civil service job in the same general area where he worked as a Tech with the target of being a GS-11 in a year to two. Well, long story a little bit longer he was a good guy but to his dismay after he paid taxes and health insurance, etc, etc ... he realized his final pay was less than when he was a Tech and he might get back to where he was as a Tech Sargent when he made GS-11. By the way, not complaining but if you are a civil service person who starts at 22 with a degree you have to work 34 years to make full retirement because the minimum retirement age is 57 in most career fields (no joke) I wish everyone the best, but it's always best to sit down and do that math before you do anything like change careers, retire, etc, etc. Good luck all.

The pay and benefits sure have changed since 1979-84 when I was in the USCG. I received as an E-2 on isolated duty (lighthouse 4 miles off the coast of Maine) just $584/mo. I did get 2.5 weeks off every 5 weeks though. When you’re on a lighthouse and there’s only one other guy, you’re basically turning to 12-18 hours a day so having 2.5 weeks off was well earned.

You can come in as an E-3 going enlisted. It’s a lot quicker and easier process to go enlisted, but the pay and scope of responsibility is a lot less. After one year of being enlisted, you can apply to become an officer. Hey Jody good video, what if you're not on active duty but Airforce National Gaurd, Would you only get BHA pay and all benefits mentioned during Basic training and when you're studying in a dorm for your job in the military?
@Jodywithawhy

Yep. That’s exactly right. But you’d only receive the BAH and food allowance if you’re married. If you’re not married, they’ll deduct it because you’re living in the dorms. Once you’re back to your duty location, you’ll be paid for the weekend drill unless you get an active position.

I'm going to OTS in like two weeks. My advice is start being that go-to guy in the office and making bonds with people. When it comes time for people to write recommendation letters, you'll want people who can speak positively about you. Ive seen people who were super qualified for the job but didn't create the bonds or came from a new base and got turned away for an officer position. But definitely get that degree done! Hey Jody, thank you for your continual contribution to curious minds. I’m seriously considering joining the Air Force active duty. My hope is to resonate with someone out there because I know I can’t be the only one going through this. My wife was in the Army for the first 8yrs of our marriage. I have a job now that pays 45k a year but it’s not enough to support my wife and two sons. We live at my parents because we can’t afford to buy a home in this market. It’s worth more to my wife and I to have our children homeschool than placing them in daycare and public school so that she can work. I can move up in my job, but I’ll have to be there for 10+ years before breaking 65k. I don’t want to say Air Force is my last choice. My last choice is to stay where I am doing the same thing for years while wondering if it would have been better if I had joined the Air Force. My wife and I know what the military is like and feel like we can handle it. We decided that if I am to join the Air Force that I should go for OTS to become an Officer (I have a bachelors and a masters). I haven’t contacted an officer recruiter yet though I’m just looking for some thoughts or insight.
@Jodywithawhy
@Jodywithawhy 5 месяцев назад
I would definitely say try the officer route if you can wait 12-18 months before going to OTS. If you need something to happen sooner, then the enlisted route may be the best option, and then try to commission from within the Air Force. Either way you’d be fine, however the officer route pays substantially more.

I have a masters degree and 8yrs of career experience in the healthcare industry. I have reached out to a recruiter near me but no response from them yet. Will probably go to their office sometime. Would it be better to go in as enlisted or as officer? If I do choose to go in as an officer, would it need to go in to BMT first before going to the OTS? For the tests, would I need to take the ASVAB first before taking the AFOQT?
@Jodywithawhy
@Jodywithawhy 5 месяцев назад
If you pursue the officer route you would not need to go to BMT or take the ASVAB. Those are both for enlisted members, however you would be required to take the AFOQT and go to OTS. Choosing whether to be an officer or enlisted member really comes down to preference and timing. Like do you have the time to wait 12-18 months to become an officer. Or do you need a job now. That’s usually the biggest deciding factor for most people when deciding.

@@Jodywithawhy the thing is, the government got no choice but to house its military personnel. It's not an option. Whether funding it or directly providing housing, it's the same. Same for food, they give you the money or provide the food. It's mandated, not a favor.
@Jodywithawhy
@Jodywithawhy 5 месяцев назад
If this were true wouldn’t that make it a perk? I mean since no civilian companies do it. I think what you want and what most other people want who make this argument is your cake and eat it too. You want the “free housing” plus the additional allowance. That would be too good to be true, and if it were it would take way more qualifications than a high school diploma to obtain. When I recruited I got the privilege to meet people who separated from the military, and they admitted they took everything for granted while in. It wasn’t until they were smacked in the face with reality that they realized those perks were everything.
@njpme
@njpme 5 месяцев назад
@@Jodywithawhy I'm not knocking it, because I'm a veteran. It was great not thinking about all the things that others would have to think about like housing, food and healthcare. It used to seem like a perk then, but I know this the bare minimum the government could provide. They have no choice. So is it really a perk? I think bundling it as a perk with a dollar value for recruitment is slightly misleading, but I get it. No if you mention Post-911, Vet-tech, Montgomery GI BILL, tuition assistance etc, COOL, now we have some tangible benefits outside of bare minimum expectations. Nothing personal against you bro, just my $0.02.
@Jodywithawhy

It’s really hard to combine the entire value one gets when joining. I try doing it at surface level, but yes you’re correct. It’s tough, but i guarantee our military members are worth more than their base pay.

You’d have to get a financial waiver. Which means you’d have to start a payment plan on charges in collections. The way my squadron handled these, was applicants needed to show proof of two payments towards the collections, and also write a letter stating why it went to collections, why it won’t happen again and what they’re doing currently to correct the issue. Keep in mind, anytime a waiver is being done, the recruiter is expecting you to take any job they need you to fill. This is because a waiver is long and hard process to complete, so they need you to be willing to be flexible. I hope this helps and good luck.
