Air fried Blooming Onion - It Can Be Done!
Today I will be making an air fried blooming onion by request using the Cook's Essentials Air Fryer. I was a little nervous to attempt this using an air fryer. But I have to say, it turned out a lot better than I expected. So come along and I will show you step by step on how I made this air fried blooming onion.

Take this from an Englishman who has lived in the US for a long time. The answer is quite simple. It is known as the DT phenomena. All Americans from coast to coast fail to pronounce T's that fall inside a word. Americans either change the T to a D as in "thirty which they pronounce "thirdy." or they drop the T as in the word "twenty" which they pronounce "twenny." Some words have both the dropped T as well as the change of the T to D. One example of this is "Atlanta" which all Americans pronounce "Addlanna". It should of course be pronounced "At lant ah." I used to laugh at the old TV commercial for Butter Buds. The spokesperson stated, "Budder Buds a Bedder Budder." For those who would like to speak with an English accent, this is extremely simple. Take some written text and underline each and every word that has a T inside of it. Record yourself reading it while speaking normally (DO NOT TRY TO PUT ON AN ACCENT) and pronouncing all the T's. You will be amazed at how English you sound. Indeed, you will easily fool an Englishman into thinking that he voice was from an English person. I once taught this method to an aspiring actress who was trying to land herself a part in a movie as an English girl. Once I FINALLY got her to stop trying to put on an accent and simply speak naturally and pronounce her T's, she sounded exactly like an English girl. She easily got the part and I got one Hell of a nice kiss from her (a little bit of modesty here). You my girl simply spelled Petals the way you and all other Americans pronounce it. By the way, how about some good air fryer recipes for FRIDDAS or POTAYDOS. PS: I loved your recipe You are truly fantastic. I have subscribed to your channel and await more great recipes. You have an ardent English follower.

Hi Kelly, try buttermilk next time with the egg, will make a thicker batter/like coating. Also, if you put two chop sticks or wooden skewers down on each side of the onion, this will stop from cutting all the way through. If you want, you can use a drive or salt shaker to apply the coating more uniformly also. And for a crisper coating are some corn starch or rice/potato starch if you have it. In fact that is all I would use normally. As to dipping sauce I usually make my sweet Vidalia sauce for onions or green tomatoes, and other deep fried veggies. I don't have an air fryer as of now, but I plan on getting one soon. Thank you for trying this method, it will be my basis for moving forward in the future.!!

No guilt? Buddy air fryers are a convenience not a health item. There is little to no difference between frying something in oil and using this machine besides time and effort. Cooking oil contains almost exclusively fat which is actually good for your diet. Simply removing that doesn't remove the carbs and sugars that come from this dish.

At first this looks like a lot of work but as with anything the more you do it the better and faster you get at it. After making 4 or 5 Blooming Onions over the course of time it will be easy peasy and fast. And there's a good tip in the comments about sifting the flour over the onion instead of dipping it in and making clumps. Good video.

That is one reason why I love air frying, you don't get all that grease and it still tastes good.
@edplow5917
@edplow5917 5 лет назад
THE REASON IT WAS SO GREASY IS THAT THEIR OIL IS NOT UP TO 375 DEGREES F. AND THEY DONT CARE. IN THE PAST 6MONTHS I HAVE TOld THE WAITER TO MAKE SURE THE COOK HAS THE OIL @375 degrees. they all come back with the grease running all over the dish and i send it back for the next sucker to try. shame shame .

I loved the Awesome Blossum at Chili’s but they don’t have it on the menu. I asked the waiter as they only offer the petals & he told me that they would receive it frozen & they would just drop it in the fryer. Wonder if that would work if you use wet batter, freeze and then use the AF? I’m going to try it both ways as soon as I can get my hands on Vidalia onions. Thanks for the great video!

Perfect! Thanks for sharing...many people like to put their neg feedback on however, if it seems to difficult most should probably just not use a fryer like this. I love mine! To me this was pretty easy. I would suggest to the ones on here that find this "to be too time consuming" buy your batter in a box and sauce in a jar. See, then all you need to do is cut your onion! lol thanks Kelly!

Smitty here. I love the bumming onion. If you use 2 wooden skewers / one on each side so not to cut to deep. I use ice water and soak for about a hour. Egg and milk bath and seasoned flour. Remove from water dry it a bit. Flour really good / shake off excess dip in milk / egg bath then back in flour. Bake or fry. Enjoy. Sauce / horseradish sauce / catsup w/ a little cayenne. Outback ( get out of town )

Much easier way to cut the sections after you've removed the core of your onion is to use kitchen sheers to cut each section. Best ever dipping sauce for blooming onions.. red raspberry jam mixed with jalapeno jelly - 3 to 1 ratio.

GREAT receipt!! GREAT JOB!! FYI: you don't have to come onion & batter form is better (that's how we did it in restaurant). And vadelia onion does have the best flavor. Keep doing what you do best!! Peace & Blessings

Down here, in the land of giant, sweet, vidalia onions it is common to find the tool used to make the bloom in your onion (or an inexpensive version, anyway) in the grocery stores. Not needed, as you show but does make a nice, even, easy job of it. Look on eBay, also. One big secret to getting a nice bloom is to soak the onion in water a long time, a minute or so in boiling at first, then pull it and let it soak in ice water. A long time. The boiling water is optional but can help. The long soak in ice water is not. This helps with petal separation. Air fryers are notorious for leaving "dry" areas when trying to fry battered foods like chicken, etc.. A thorough spritz with cooking oil, as you did, then after a few minutes, pull it out and spritz again, sometimes 3-4 times, depending on food (chicken, etc.) and length of cooking. It'll never be perfect but with a little practice, you'll get pretty good at it. Using a sifter helps prevent clotting, too. I'm an old-fashioned boy, though and still like to deep fry my bloomers. ;) If you want a healthy fry, do it in peanut oil. BUT, if you just want stupid-good, once in a while treats, deep fry it in rendered beef fat (tallow) like McDonald's used to do with their French fries. It's what put their fries on the map. OoohhhmuhGOD... LOL

For the sauce simply try 1/2 1,000 Is. dressing and 1/2 horseradish sauce. Tastes like the restaurants and easy. Also,I've made these but lately just make onion loafs by slicing the same way but, all the way through, and separating the petals. Place loosely I a fryer basket then into the deep fryer. The Bloomin' is work and not always successful. Plenty of room for error when cutting and having mud left in the middle from under cooking.
