Wow I’m surprised you can still buy them I’ve had mine for 35 years and you will be pleased to know it’s still working great and the more you use it the more you will like it, just one thing is every time you adjust the mixture screw just blip the throttle and let it settle a minute or two before accepting the reading and do that every time you adjusted the mixture screw. Good job done and a good video 😊

I bought one of these analysers nearly 40 years ago. Has an analogue display not the digital one on the newer ones. Always found it a useful tool. Mine still works great. Have a lot of Gunson tools never had any problems with them. Just have to wait a minute between adjustments to let things settle down. Used it on two TR 6 I had in the mid 80s and early 90s and on my current TR 4a.

I used an Innovate Motorsports 3807 LM-2 Digital Dual Air/Fuel Ratio Wideband Meter (2 O2 Sensors) and OBD-II Scan Tool on my '74 Alfa when tuning the SPICA and it worked well. What was really nice is that I could take the car out for a drive while having my son watch the meter. The only downside is that you have to have O2 Sensor bungs in the Exhaust. In my case a new exhaust header solved that problem. This is a far cry from the old Heath-kit Exhaust Analyzer that I still have does. Just as with Elin's experience I was surprised at how well and how much more powerful the Alfa ran after getting the Air/Fuel into "that's good enough" range.

I have one of the original Gunson Gas analysers, the case is bigger, but much the same. It seems the spark plug colours are really good, with slight variation, but only slight which could be only down to a rocker clearance, a valve or even the cylinders, but to be honest, you wont get much better than that. That looks like a really good job. I am inspired to tune my MGA again. Thanks for the video.

The trick to colour tune is to wait a minute between each small movement of the adjustment screw/jet. Correct Float height is crucial aswel.

I used the colortune on my 63 Mini Cooper back in the early 70s and seemed to work ok. Worked best in a very dark garage.

They are £80 new nowadays. Just bought a dirty old one for £33 and spent half an hour sandblasting the threads and cleaning the glass. A better proposition than the analyser as you can tune both carbs independantly.

Your initial calibration unit was on a top of a car and you bring it down to exhaust level. That changes calibration values.

I vaguely remember these machines (albeit analog rather than digital) from back in the day when the serious motorcycle boys were trying to upstage one another. Nowadays it really looks like mostly MG, Triumph and Jaguar owners/mechanics are using them. I enjoyed your discussion of the results. Thanks Elin, have a good weekend.

I had a Gunson gas tester years ago, it never would stabilise no matter how long you left it, I chucked it in the bin eventually. Very nice car BTW

Very interesting video Elin, takes me back to the sixties and seventies when I played around with the same carburettors on the Triumph Vitesse. Over the years I had four of them.What I did to set them up was to shut one carb down completely, (slacken the clamps) and adjust the other one using the colour tune plug.Then do the same to the other one. Once adjusted for mixture ratio synchronise them and then your good to go. I have done the same with my Triumph Stag and that runs well. Of course you can only do this where the inlet manifolds design has a common link to each carb.

I have used the Colour Tune tool for years and find it generally gives good results. The gas analyser looks great though, I may just treat myself to a new tool for the garage.
@pda49184
@pda49184 2 месяца назад
That was most interesting. The Gunson Exhaust analyser seems to work really well. Years ago I tried their Colourtune and I couldn't get on with it. Now the cars tuned properly it'll be interesting to see if the colourtune works for you. I had a gadget ( who's name I can't remember) that you could screw in a sparkplug and it would shot-blast it and make it look almost new. I used to do that before the final road test to get an accurate picture of each plug after the drive .. There was almost always one plug that was slightly different, but not enough to cause a panic attack 😅..

It looks like one carb is low on damping oil or the damper is worn. Look at how they lift at 18:00

Elin, I’m with you. I have never been able to successfully do the “lift the piston” test on my TR4A’s HS6 carbs. That test always causes the engine to stumble/die.
@wheater5
@wheater5 2 месяца назад
In that case you might be lifting the piston too much. It needs to be barely lifted, just a couple of millimetres. Or, of course, your idle mixture is too weak!
@rrittberg
@rrittberg 2 месяца назад
Oh yeah.....I almost forgot....Ive seldom gotten a successful outcome when Ive used the lifting pins to attempt to correctly set mixture or directly lifted the piston itself.What I now do is listen to the exhaust note as I make changes and this has been helpful in getting a proper result

Gunson Colortune? When new to the LBC hobby, I bought one some 9 years back for use on my MG, but very iffy/uncertain results - comments on "MG Experience" suggested that it used to work great back in the day - like pre 1980 - before gas blends/formulations with ethanol, etc. started taking over the market.

I tried using the Gunson Colourtune and did not have a good experience with it ,in that I could not discern bettween the sought after blue color to the combustion flame and the color which indicated a proper combustion,not too rich nor lean.Elin,I will await to get your opinion of the device.Great,informative videos,keep up the good work!

Although tuning on tick over is simple I guess the important phase is when the engine is cruising at a typical road speed (maybe 2000 rpm)
@wheater5
@wheater5 2 месяца назад
Yes, this is really only designed to set the idle mixture, or mixture at constant rpm. It assumes that the correct needles are in the carburettor and that they and the jets aren’t worn. I used mine to get an engine I’d fitted with an aftermarket ECU up and started but for tuning the rest of the mixture range I fitted a wideband O2 sensor and used software on a laptop. I use a separate 12v battery to power the gas tester so that it’s not affected by varying voltage when the car runs.
@philtucker1224

@@wheater5 true and also to be mindful that most of the Gunson products were developed purely with carburettors (well before we had common use of Injection/ ECU mapping etc etc..)

Peace be upon you, my brother, how are you? I am following you from an Arab country, Algeria, and I am working on restoring an old 1968 Triumph car. I need some parts. Can you please help, especially since you are specialized in what I see in this type, and also mastery is a good thing? We hope for a response. With my regards

Why calibrate the Gunson Gas analyser to 2,0% co, when it's in the exhaust you have to read 3% co? I think you only have 1% co in the exhaust. Sorry for my poor english, i'm danish.
