Hello, neighbors, it's Brad here at etrailer, and today we're taking a look at installing the Air Lift LoadLifter 5000 rear air helper bags on a 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. Today's trucks seem like comfort seems to take over the role instead of to towing capacity when it comes to suspension, and that's 'cause a lot of people daily drive their trucks. But if you're doing truck things, like pulling a trailer or putting a payload in your truck, that's when you really start to notice that suspension, you can handle it, but it does want to sag quite a bit. A lot of that just comes down to the factory jounce bumpers being really short. So these normally bolts up on the frame, and the jounce strike plate is down here. So that leaves a huge gap for these to compress before bottoming out.
And at that point, you're putting a lot of strain on your factory shocks. So all of that has to compress before it bottoms out, and that's why you see these trucks that are sagged towing a heavy load. And it's not exactly unsafe, per se, but it does cut into a few different driving aspects that not only you know the suspension is getting prematurely worn by being under compression, but also that translates up front. So you're gonna lose steering feel, you're gonna lose braking. Sometimes your headlights will shine a little bit higher.
And just overall, the truck feels like something's tugging behind it, and that's 'cause you are. Putting air bags, or really any suspension enhancement in the rear, just kind of beefs up the truck a little. It feels like it's got a little more gusto. And throughout all of it, you're allowing your suspension to be able to do what it can do by allowing that shock travel to come back and play. You're not just maxed out at the bottom.
And that's gonna translate to the front. So you are gonna get that steering feel back and you're gonna get better braking overall. Another added benefit of air bags is going to be sway control. On the vehicle, just as you saw before with the jounce bumper, as that truck leans side to side, it's really probably not gonna bottom out on hard turns, whereas having a little bit of support right away means that the truck's gonna stay nice and clean and allow you to make those turns. It's gonna give it a little bit more of a planted feel and better feedback in the steering wheel overall.
Now this system in particular is going to be a 5,000 pound capacity, and that means that you can carry up to 5,000 pounds. So try to cater it to a normal load that you'd be towing. It's not gonna give you that extra capacity, but that's what it's capable of handling. So these are actually a pretty heavy-duty application for 1/2 ton truck. A lot of times you'll see these 5000s on 3/4 and one ton trucks, but it is going to work just fine on a truck like this. So our neighbor today has decided to add these to his truck and probably because he does some work with it. So whether you're pulling a heavy trailer or you have a payload by picking up some landscaping in the bed, either way, that truck's gonna sag, and these are gonna fight against it. Now, this isn't a dual path configuration from the box, and that means that you have individual control of each bag by having individual Schrader valves, which is really nice. If you're parking on a campsite that's off kilter, you can adjust for that in the suspension of the truck. Or if you have a load that's slightly off center as well, you can account for that, which is really nice. But if you ever wanted to go to a single-path system, where one trader valve controls equal pressure to each bag, it's as simple as picking up a push connect tee fitting union. And that's not included in this kit, but you can pick that up here at etrailer, and it just tees that line together to one filling valve. Now something that you may want to consider also, you don't have to do it now, but maybe long term, once you get tired of having to manually fill your Schrader valve each time, you can add a compressor into this air bag system pretty easily. Overall, the installation of this is pretty easy to do. There's no drilling required. It all just uses brackets that goes on where the factory jounce bumper and strike plate are. So really this is one you can do in your driveway or garage. I would say give yourself about two to three hours. None of it's terribly hard, you're just kind of under the truck. And there's a few spots that get a little bit tight with some of the hardware of getting it torqued down. But other th
