Air Suspension Manual Override - Emergency Lift Kit. Land Rover LR3 Air Fix!

LRs are known for Air Suspension faults. Mine stopped working all together and laid on the ground dead to the bump stops. The LR3 still ran and drove, just while on the ground. So I built this kit so I could manually pump up the Rover and put it in the air and drive again.
Here are the links to materials used.
Air Hose:
amzn.to/3kWh9O6
Extra T Fittings:
amzn.to/3HisnnK
Schrader Valve Connections:
push to fit:
amzn.to/40bQ1ei
Compression fit:
amzn.to/3XSRqVI
This is useful in many ways. If you are Offroad and have damage to your system, you could still inflate and get home safely. Also if you are offroad and high center, you can add even more air to get a sky high lift and get yourself off the obstacle.
Additionally you can inflate or deflate each corner individually. Overall this was great and put my LR3 back in action.

Just discovered this video! Absolutely amazing! Just might do it on my own LR3, this just might save my rear if there was ever a suspension fault, I can disconnect the air distribution block and manually pump the springs!

Great result. Peace of mind. In West Australia I've heard mention that some tag-along tours into remote areas wouldn't allow air suspension Land Rovers. But this has inspired me to go ahead and order the parts to do this to our 2006 D3. In addition I will add small hand valves between the tee-in fittings and the solenoid valve blocks as sometimes the failure is the block itself and they can fail open if full of moisture or gunk or powdered dessicant from the dryer. The hand valve will allow the valve block to be isolated and taken out of the equation.

my GF did this on hers. She has arnotts so they have a check valve set to 75 psi so you should in theory never end up on bumpstops. Regardless she put a T fitting that bypasses the main compressor so that we can fill manually.

Great concept as Emergency back up. The air struts are not designed to hold air perfectly, so I don’t think this will hold to use long term without having to continually add air every so often. I have had a lot of experience with LR3 air system repairs and mods. That blue tubing, it needs to be 100% nylon. The poly or poly blend won’t hold with higher pressures and heat. Trust me, had to replace all my non nylon hoses after failures in the road and trail. Next, you should only cut those hoses with a sharp utility knife or a guillotine hose cutting tool. By smashing the hose does permanent damage and will cause leaks long term. Fyi: those valve blocks lift up and off the mount, you can get to the rear one with jacking the rig up and not having to take the wheel off. I’m curious if you don’t have shut of valves if the ECU will stop lower the rig with faults based on unexpected behavior causing it to drop to its bumps. Also, look at the SYA kit from Lucky8 LLC to keep you up higher in a failure (even complete bag failure) and let you roll with larger tires. It’s Genius. And keeps your bags at near normal pressures and extension while lifted with rods or Xlifter / GAP tool. Cheers!

Nope. One section of PU tubing, the kind link above, blew out on the maiden voyage. I also bought nylon, as recommended by another commenter, and the working pressure and burst rating is like 2-3x higher, but it was so rigid I tried the PU first. Now I have to do the job twice. @garygarst
@garygarst 2 года назад
One suggestion. Add another "T" fitting to the two air lines (Front + Back pairs) which would give you one air supply for the front pair and one supply for the back pair so all you have is two shrader valves ( one in front, one in back) that will fill the front air shocks together and same for the back. I can't see a reason to fill the individual air shocks to different pressure ( or heights). This way the pair of shocks will be at equal pressure.

I'm watching this 2 years on. I hope your black plastic T pieces are still holding because they're only rated to 10 bar and the air springs run at about 14 bar. The brass 20 bar fittings are far more reliable. and reliability is what you are trying to achieve here. As an aside, I've never had the airbags deflate or get damaged on any of my L319 Landies and I have given them some hammer over 10 years and 600,000km. Driver and passenger sides are potentially confusing to international viewers. Stick to Left and Right. Tell me you are an American without telling me you are an American: call a Land Rover a Rover :) I have an air take off on my L319s to use the suspension system for emergency tyre inflation, using similar kit to you. Overall a good job. If you do use this manual override, be sure to disable the air suspension control system by pulling F26 or using an IID tool to disable it.

Any advice will be very much appreciated.
@FarReachFR
@FarReachFR Год назад
Yes you can keep driving it, if that is the only error/issue being experienced. The warning lights might yell at you, but you are still the boss. Its not going to cause engine damage for example, if the only issue is it wants to lower itself down, and it cant. Be aware that if you are in extended mode you are a bit taller, so you might be a slight bit more tippy in the curves and corners, so just go a bit slower on turns.

How much PSI did you fill each side up to? I am doing this on Sunday to my 2006 Land Rover LR3 SE
@FarReachFR
@FarReachFR 2 года назад
Hi DJ, I actually dont recall the exact figures, but about 70 psi in the rear and I think it was close to 120 psi in the front. But take those figures for what it is worth. It was a lower PSI than I expected as the front and rear PSI I have seen recorded elsewhere list 145 PSI and 116 psi. In each case though, it will relate to the weight of the vehicle. The front always runs at a higher PSI since it has the heavy engine up front. The rear is always less unless you are hauling a heavy load, since the back is usually mostly empty.
@notalegalalien

Amazing.... so if I want to do this in my Rover , I would need a compressor that can provide at least 60 psi? Could you tell me a list fo the parts needed and where you got them. Thank you
@FarReachFR
@FarReachFR 2 года назад
Thanks. I would recommend a compressor or pump that can do 150 PSI. (60 psi is not enough) While the back sits high even with 70 psi, The front is much heavier and runs at a much higher pressure. 100 psi will only barely get the front off the ground.

@FarReachFR

You could and it would likely work reasonably fine. That said technically depending on loading the left and right could be under different weights. For example if you have a driver and not a passenger, and thus require slightly different pressures to level the vehicle. This is why LR measures and modulates each corner.

WARNING READ BEFORE YOU INSTALL THIS SYSTEM: OK, while the idea is sound, the pneumatic piping and the push joints he's recommending are total rubbish and dangerous; i'll explain. The piping is plastic and heats up anywhere near the engine and blows out!!!! Trust me, with 110lbs of air in the pipes it's easy for it to blow out. I did this job as an emergency fix, just as he does. It does work, however DO NOT ORDER THE PLASTIC PIPING. Luckily for me I was stationary when the airline blew out in the front, first on the left, then 30 seconds later, same on the right. You MUST buy 1/4inch nylon pipe (NOT 6mm plastic pipe as he suggests) Nylon pneumatic is the only pipe that will hold and not blow out under heat/pressure. ALSO the kit he recommends DOES NOT COME WITH VALVES to actually put air into the system. You will need to order 1/4 inch Schrader valves off of Amazon to make the system affective. Hope this helps.

Wouldn't it have been way easier to just put one t connector in line with the existing air pump? Filling the air reservoir? If you needed to go to extreme, then put in a 5 gallon auxiliary reservoir tank to give higher volume? Seems like what you just did is a waste of time, money, and convenience. Dang man. I really hate to break it to you this way, but you did way more than necessary.
@FarReachFR
@FarReachFR 2 года назад
Hi Garry. You are right, it was more work, but the reason I did it close to the struts and not in line with the existing pump and reservoir was that rover computer issues or wiring issues can lead to a failure there. (for example transfer blocks shutting down, sensor wires being snagged and ecus glitching all are still a failure option if injecting at that point). But at the strut there is no way it can electrically be blocked, it becomes 100% mechanical injection point. Thus an emergency bypass.
@garrykennedy5484
@garrykennedy5484 2 года назад
@@FarReachFR So putting a T in right after the air pump would not work? I'm guessing you may be talking about in case of valve block failure? Height sensor failure? Those are easy enough fixes and you can keep spares on board. Maybe I'm missing something?
@FarReachFR
@FarReachFR 2 года назад
@@garrykennedy5484 This project bypassed a suspected corrupted ECU/BCU+. In more detail: You could certainly add a T right after the air pump and it would work for many situations, but not all. In this particular instance the LR3 when scanned was throwing data and failure codes that appeared that one of the LR3's onboard computers failed (The valve blocks and height sensors you asked about were registering fine). Common electrical and relay bypass measures (that usually work) still resulted in failure modes. You could carry extra body control modules on board, but the particular computer in question was quite expensive and fraught with secondary problems. And that only solves one element of future possible failure, as multiple points of failure still exist within the LR designed electrical system. Pressure pump-> thermal sensors-> height sensors-> multiple valve blocks->ECUs-> not to mention the wiring harness itself/fuses/connectors/corrosion/shorting. Even a minor door ajar is a shutdown mechanism for the air suspension. As such, I was willing to take some extra work in exchange to make an absolute-full-bypass-direct-injection-system. I wanted ZERO electrical fail points in my Emergency Lift Kit. Would it be much easier to T in after the pump. Yes. and that would solve for pump failure and thermal sensor override failure. But I hate ALL electrical failures so I by passed ALL electrical fail points. Including the computers :)

@@FarReachFR I didn't consider the BCU failing. That would present a problem that only your solution would work for. I wonder if there's a manually activated valve system out there that could be put in place? Like maybe from an older air suspension system.

@@garrykennedy5484 There are actually a lot of air ride suspension and what I would call "show off" bagged kits available as well. Those could make a reasonable swap and would result in brand new components.
