This video is for all the new airbrush artists who want to learn the basics in portrait painting. It's a simple painting, more like a sketch rather than a complete portrait but within this lesson I'll go over all the fundamentals and information you need to complete your first portrait. We'll start by creating and scaling a grid to transfer over the reference photo to the canvas. To simplify everything we will be using one color and I'll walk you through the entire process in the first part of this lesson. The second and final part will be right here early next week. Thanks for watching!

Perfect guide. Anyway, like all your movies and advice. I really only learn airbrush from the internet and your lessons are perhaps the most helpful for learning airbrush. Could you please post a link to download the reference photo?

I came into airbrushing with my eyes on choppers and hot rods. So for me, it's all about hard surface. Of course that leads to a whole new host of challenges. But there's nothing for me like stepping back to gaze into a glass flat finish over your art so crystal clear, that you wanna just reach your hand right into it

Thank you for adding the grid reference images for the people without access to a printer, really great idea. On a different note, have you used/heard of stone paper? I have half an encyclopedia of gesso covered Arches paper waiting for me to make mistakes all over, but was just curious. I haven't seen any airbrush artists mention it, only water colour artist. Thanks for another great video.

Thanks! Are you talking about Stonehenge paper by legion? Anything by legion paper is incredibly high quality like arches. But is there a paper made of stone I haven't heard of?! I kind of got hooked on only using arches watercolor paper and canvas, but am always up for trying something new.

@@theartworkshop I have been seeing reviews on paper made of calcium carbonate. They call it "Stone Paper".It seems to be a mix of ground rock and a resin that does not absorb water. The feature that is quoted most often is that it's extremely smooth. Strangely manufacturers have taken the marketing angle of "You are saving trees so it is better for the environment" but really they are mining rocks and mixing it with plastic. I thought it might be another synthetic paper option that required less prep? No idea of it's pH or if it is archival.

@@handsofrhythm3415 How interesting! I read a few articles on it and it seems really interesting. Thanks for this. I'll order some and try it out.

Very nice, great work. That’s a lot of prep work, and use of stencil parts. I remember the grid method from high school 1990. I never really adapted to it. It’s different for everyone. Awesome demo I’ve always wanted to try a little stenciling. Looks very helpful in some areas

I have another question please, what if I don't want to scratch and rubberize? How to create highlights with white paint? I have information that the white color from Createx illustration colors is absolutely not applicable for highlights. Thank you for your answer :)

Can I ask you something. You mention using a little cratex reducer on a cloth to erase grid lines. Is that safe to the drawing paper and a good addition to erasing with rubbers. Please say a little about this technique. Only just stumbled across your channel. Thanks.
@theartworkshop

I mainly use this technique on gessoed canvas, but for paper I'd prob just stick with a kneaded eraser.
