One of the most common questions I get asked is "Can I just use streaking grime through an airbrush like normal?" Well today I'll answer this plus a few more questions and teach you everything you NEED to know about airbrushing with enamel paints!

I like Tamiya, Revell and humbrol enamels a lot for brush painting since under a lacquer based paint or lacquer clear coat you can remove youre mistakes with enamel thinners without causing the plastic or lacquer paint to get stripped or damadged. But Airbrushing enamel paints I tried it a few times and its much harder to vent out. The toxic smell will stay for a long time in the spraybooth. So I only recomend it to people that got their own painting room with good ventilation.

Ventilation is VERY important when dealing with enamels. Spraybooths are ideal if you can but the air flow is the most important thing.

@@SprayBlackStudios Agree, I use a 3m respirator but the enamel smell will stay for days so I have to take my spraybooth out of my room so I dont breath it in while sleeping.

I used to be a commercial muralist for theming companies - they'd send me around the country (as far as Alaska) to airbrush miles of murals. We primarily used house paints because the walls were going to be clear coated after. But I used to have to take 8 fresh airbrushes with me on a trip ( there was no time to do a good cleaning and sometimes a project took a month ). Badger Anthem 155 was everyone's weapon of choice ( It's the dependable Glock ), but also Badger has this awesome policy ( or at least they did a decade ago ), where you could mail them your airbrush with a little cash and it would be NEW when it came back. They were great. I just made sure to include a nice tip for whomever was doing my brushes, and it was STILL super cheap. Love Badger.

I use lacquer thinner and Mr Hobby Tool Cleaner (which I believe is mostly acetone) to do a thorough cleanup after spraying enamels. I always pull the needle out toward the front in order to minimize contamination toward the seal in front of the trigger.

How interesting. I think I need to find a model to try this out on, possibly terrain. I've always used them in specific areas so would be interesting to hit a larger surface area

This would be amazing for terrain pieces, would allow you to build up a lot of depth very easily on large ruins

I had a blast spraying Tamiya acrylics but the minute i tried some Humbrol enamels, the damn thing started spraying blotches all over the place, UGH. I`ve found that the thinners they use for epoxy floor paints from INTERNATIONAL is nothing short of a godsend for old dried up enamel paints. Think of it as 10 times more potent than white spirits which in all honesty does not dissolve old dried up paints, i`m sorry to say.

I haven't tried using enamels in my airbrush yet, but I have used some lacquer based paint products. I think the secret is to. Plan your session, have a goal. Have some thinners ready to flush through, get your tackle ready. Take the phone off the hook, as soon as you're done, get that thinners, and flush. strip the thing, get it back together, and spray out onto a white rag, or failing that newspaper, if there is a streak, it still ain't clean, start again. Treat your airbrush like a gun. Get good at stripping and re assembling. Oh yes, and remember the dermatitis rish from chemicals on your hands! If you lose some parts. Go online to air products in Harrogate. Very reasonable, and quick. happy spraying. .

Lacquer based paints are very similar to be honest! As you have mentioned a lot of it is about being prepared and being focussed, not letting things settle and dry up inside!

For filters for the mask, there's a lot of unintuitive numbers and letters on those. Would 3M 6055 A2 Organic Vapour Filter be sufficient for enamels? My own reading up says it would be, but I'd rather not take a chance with making my asthma worse xD

Yeah they would be perfect for enamels, anything with an A2 rating should deal with any solvent based paints without issue 👍

No, seals arent that expensive to replace and they make also quite resilient seals to white spirit and such stuff as well.

I do have 3 questions, so I went with enamel testors paint. 1st question, I was wondering if it was possible to use enamel paint on a model kit that has been coated with a Vallejo primer that is acrylic based ? Can a clear/top coat enamel with Vallejo acrylic varnish? I ask because that’s what I have available to me locally. 3rd, can I thin Vallejo with the testors enamel thinner/cleaner, or is it only to clean up enamels specifically?

Hi Bryan, You can use enamels ontop of acrylic paints without issue. I do advise that you make sure that the Acrylics are fully cured (a day or so) though. You can use any varnish really, most people stick to an acrylic varnish as they are easier to get/use. Enamel thinner/cleaner is designed specifically for enamel paints, as they are solvent based it works on a different medium to the water based acrylics.

I used Enamel Metalics on a model (AK Xtreme Metals) great finish but I wanted to apply Streaking Grime overtop but using the thinners after a varnish still wiped off the Xtreme Metal coat. Note the wipe was really just a dab. Do I need to apply multiple coats to protect the base enamel coat or did I need to leave it on longer before applying thinners?

How long did you leave the varnish? I'd want to make sure you have a couple of good coats and let them cure properly. Probably leaving them overnight before applying the streaking grime. That should definitely help 👍

Actually, I worked it out I had run out of normal thinners so I used the Xtreme metal thinner which will (duh) remove the metal paint. I painted a plastic spoon then Steaking grime then used the dregs of my normal thinner and the Xtreme Metal pain stayed on then used the XMT and it comes off. Problem solved.

super duper useful. I'm getting into making custom controllers/keyboard/mice and enamels really look like the way to go for long-term durability. Otherwise I'd be using water based paints and protecting them with 2k automotive clear, and thats REALLY expensive for gaming peripherals. Looks like I'll be getting really familiar with enamels in the future, and I was intending to airbrush them so I guess I'll have to increase my dexterity as well to take apart an airbrush as quickly as you did. cheers man.

Hello, very nice introduction. Could you let me know if you use AK enamel washes without airbrush, just simply painting by brush is it also very dangerous without mask and ventilation?

Thankyou Daniel, I do also use them just by brush although when used with a brush I tend to be a lot more restrained and targeted in how I use them. The fumes still aren't great for you so I would suggest good ventilation but the mask isn't essential if you are painting with a normal brush.

Yeah but the particules stay very long in suspension. I prefer the spray booth.

When I was a child I use to build model cars, always shot enamels through a airbrush. I didn’t know you were suppose to use an mask back then. This might be why kids are not made as tough these days 😂.

All seals should be teflon, or replaced to teflon ,that way enamel and lacquer is never a problem

I'm saving this information for when i get an airbrush. I figured the enamels and thinners had to be really rough on that rubber. it probably dried out eons ago with all those solvents on it. thanks for your advice Jeff.
