Airbus A319 Cockpit View of Extreme Windy Landing

Airbus A319 Landing close to crosswind Limits. Despite the aircraft being on the right profile, the Glide slope warning is triggered due to an anomaly at the Aerodrome the Aircraft was operating into. It was close to impossible to hold the camera still because of the gusts!

Looks like it was impossible to hold the camera still when the plane was rolling out after landing. The wind should not have affected the plane's movement after touchdown.
@SkyLifeHighLife
@SkyLifeHighLife 2 года назад
Once the aircraft touches down the landing is far from over. The pilots still need to keep putting in rudder inputs to compensate for X-Wind and to keep the aircraft straight.
@crfdln
@crfdln 2 года назад
@@SkyLifeHighLife Are you a piiot?? Doesn't sound like it. Yes....those inputs are necessary after touchdown, but the A/C should not be bouncing around like it is while still in the air. Once the weight of the plane is on the tires, the roll out should be smoother than the approach. Of my 3,996 landings, many of them have been crosswinds.

@Tonymason762
@Tonymason762 2 года назад
Just wondering from a glider pilots perspective . In a glider we would fly pretty much the same technique for a x wind landing but would also have to apply a tad of left aileron when kicking off the drift due to the further effect of rudder which I’m guessing might be more pronounced in a glider. Would you still have to apply some aileron during the kick off on a larger plane such as the Airbus?
@Bayaweg
@Bayaweg 2 года назад
Yes it’s the same technique! A little opposite aileron input during the flare whilst gently applying required rudder

They probably established on the localizer/GS using the ILS before disonnecting the A/P. You can just about see on the navigation display that it say "ILS25" at the top. In good weather conditions, it's pretty normal to fly the majority of the ILS by hand, using the flight director and LOC/GS diamonds on the PFD for guidance.

My father was a airline captain from 1942-1981. He began flying in the Northeast US in 1942. He captained the DC-3, DC-4 DC-6, Lockheed L049 Connie, Vickers Viscount, B-720, DC-8, Stretch DC-8, DC-10, and B-747. I would say flying and landing a DC-3 in rough winter weather in icing conditions at 10,000 ft. or less with no doppler radar or any radar was much more difficult than anything today's pilots could experience. This landing is a cake walk compared to old school pilots of the 30's, 40's, and 50's.

Is it possible to have a safer fully automated landing now with a computer better able to judge all the minor inputs required to land in windy or thermic conditions than by an experienced pilot.
@Jjengering
@Jjengering 2 года назад
The autopilot cant handle the landing if you get strong crosswind, there are limits in place for each aircraft type.
@SkyLifeHighLife
@SkyLifeHighLife 2 года назад
As Joshua said, there are autoland X-wind crosswind limits, and it's even more limiting when runway is contaminated with water, snow, slush etc. So when the going gets really tough, it's all down to the skill of the crew. Also, autoland is used in weather where horizontal and/or vertical Viz is at or below Minimums - nothing to do with X-winds.

A tad low, but flying VFR and within limits, my guess is he wanted to butter the landing for the passengers as when you come in hot and high, you have to pound it in to the runway or risk a long landing / go-around.
