In aviation, “retard” is a command to reduce the throttle position. It is used throughout the industry but is especially noteworthy in Airbus aircraft. These highly-automated planes make aural callouts based on the aircraft’s radar altitude, including one telling the pilot to retard the thrust levers on their final approach to landing.
I love how the Airbus flight computer takes a moment to stop sipping its coffee and tells the pilot what it thinks of him, just before touchdown. I hear that next year, Boeing will be releasing a software update for the 787 that laughs at you if you bounce the landing, or if you slam the landing, it will then say, "Ryanair just called, they've accepted your application for a pilot job.".

The irony of the plane saying that word is that the plane is flying itself and knows how to land, it's just waiting patiently for you to catch up and actually land it.
@@aliNET86 There is no joke. It's just two guys landing a jet and one guy says "retard-retard" which I guess means landing or something similar. In English when you call someone a retard it's an insult. I haven't read the comments but I'm assuming there are a lot of grade school replies.
@@cheekygnome there's a lot of replies that doesn't make sense. I search for it and found captain Joe channel explaining what its all about. Obviously has nothing to do with the replies. And it seems like the joke is more than 5 years old. Probably longer by this point. I didn't catch the trend when the airplane video was popular years ago but yeah RU-vid algorithm bought me here after a couple of years. 😅
@@cheekygnome It's the plane that's speaking, it's reading out how far you are from the ground as the pilots usually can't see the ground at this stage. The term "retard" means reduce you're throttle position as the pilots were still giving the plane power just above the ground
True story. In most aircraft with voice warnings systems, there are 2 voices. A female voice for the “nice to know” things that pilots may want to ignore. And a male voice for the “PAY ATTENTION!!” moments. 🤣🤣
The life of a pilot must be rough... The plane calls you names as you land, and then all the passengers starts clapping like you're an idiot and everybody expected you to crash the damn thing.
When the radioaltimeter says "Retard Retard" Its actually saying "Reduce Throttle Position, Reduce Throttle Position" So its telling the pilots to put the plane in reverse to slow it down because its going over 200 Mph down the runway and might overshoot it

Just for people confused: The callout saying "retard" (which in this case is using the "to slow" definition of the word)is a command for the pilots to pull back the throttle to idle and flare (which is when the plane tilts up a little before landing).
When arriving late during english class, we had to apologize in english. The day that happened to me, I told the teacher : "Sorry, I'm in retard". Took me a while to understand why the teacher was smiling.
Very nice landing, and the view of the pilot and runway together was perfect. I don't like getting on planes, but this shows me the level of skill that you professionals have. 😙👌

@@user-pm8je4fo7e airbus is fly by wire, meaning the inputs are first processed by a computer which will not allow you to make sudden, big movements. On top of that planes in landing configuration become slow and more difficult to control. They have to move it that much, or nothing would really happen if he just lightly touches it

At least provide some steering coefficient that could be set manually, lol. You say their objective was to mitigate possibility of sudden big movements, but in result this is exactly what pilot is forced to do.
At the "retard" callout? Although Im not a pilot, Im pretty sure thats very common, especially on Airbus aircraft. They would've heard it countless times by now
I completely understood the context when reading, but something about the way it was written out had me dying when I originally read the title of this video.
Now if you thought the airplane is trying to insult the pilots, you would be wrong. The word RETARD is simply telling the pilots to pull the throttle to idle so the plane can slow down
For anybody wondering, it says "retard" because in the context of flying an Airbus, that means reduce the throttle, which is important for that type of aircraft. And "retard" is used in different situations than just insults so don't get all mad when it gets said here and there :p
