FlyWire is about exploring flight and the freedom this incredible experience brings us on a personal level. Flying has always captured the imagination and excitement of living life to its fullest. Hi, I'm Scott Perdue. In a former life I flew the F-4 and F-15E, more recently I retired from a major airline. I've written for several aviation magazines over the years, was a consultant for RAND, the USAF, Navy, NASA as well as few others, wrote a military thriller- 'Pale Moon Rising' (still on Kindle). But mostly I like flying, or teaching flying. Some of the most fun I had was with Tom Gresham on a TV show called 'Wings to Adventure". We flew lots of different airplanes all over the country. Now with FlyWire I want to showcase the fun in flying, share the joy and freedom of flight and explore the world with you. Make sure you subscribe if you want to go along for the ride!

Very cool flight. Scott did aerobatics with glasses hanging from his T-shirt. That's a no-no. Scott can't get 'airplane' off the brain while flying in a rotorcraft. And he seemed nervous at the end toward the hover...'your airplane'...land it Scott. I have rotorcraft time although no aerobatic rotorcraft time. I would love that experience.

In a fully articulated rotor system, you always want to have positive G on the rotor, to avoid having rotor contact with the tail boom! Very cool👨‍✈️

Scott's walkaround must be something very meticulous to trust his machine to accomplish those maneuvers. For me, I'll stick to fixed wing for inverted flying, in a chopper I'd be paranoid about losing tail rotor control due to high torque and low speed.

I thought the 105s were still Eurocopter or MBB, they stopped making them before Airbus bought the group? The grandfather to the BK117 which in turn is the predecessor of the EC145 now H145 - I could have it all wrong.

Scott, is this the guy who was/is sponsored by Red Bull? If so, I had the opportunity to meet him and inspect his machine about 10 years ago at OPF prior to a performance. A very impressive, highly modified aircraft. This may be a newer machine. I recall that almost all structure was double riveted. His comments on control movements during the maneuvers were very interesting.

Chuck Aaron was the original and now Red Bull is flown by Aaron Fitzgerald. I've never seen the helicopter pilot in this video but he seems to know his skill and the machine quite well!

G'day Scott, Yikes ! UmmmGollyGOSH..., GeeDarn ! This Twirligig-Driver type of Scott you're showing us kind of reminds me of Wayne Fisher, who used to build and sell Kits - and help assemble them, for his personally-altered version of the Drifter, which was the first lawful 2-seat Ultralight in Oz... When I first saw him, in 1993 he was performing a "Cattle-Mustering Demonstration"..., conducted at less than twice Treetop-height, staying inside the Fenceline and weaving in and out of Trees in Vertical Banks at about 45 Knots. He was also partial to Dead-stick Circuits to land on one Wheel, rolling it on, Tail-up for 50 yards, before lifting up to change Wheels and wheel-barrowing along for another 50 yds or so before turning 90°onto the Taxiway - away from the grounded Mainwheel..., and the Tailwheel which would also have grounded... And as a Final Flourish his inside Wheel would Plop (!) down after that Turnoff, Leaving him just enough "Way" on to be able to roll back onto the spot ehere he began the Flight..., sometimes even retaining sufficient momentum that he was able to pivot through the final 180° to stop exactly on the spot, pointing in the right direction. It was his party trick, at Fly-ins, after ascertaining that no CASA Spooks were in attendance (!). He gave my son his first Flying Lesson, in the Drifter, when he was 5 and could barely touch the Stick (the Ground to Air Photo of which is shown in "Aerotowing Rogallo Hang Gliders....", which is findable within my "Personal Aeroplanology " playlist..., to be fact-checked at will !). When I first saw Wayne fkying, I thought, "He's mad !". A year later in seeing him again at the next annual Fly-in I thought, "Look at that, he's STILL at it !" And a year later again, "Well, considering that he's here for the third year running, he must know exactly what he's doing - and he must enjoy doing it without ever mucking it up...; so relax and enjoy the Airshow, kinda thing. About 5 years later as he touched on one Wheel, the Axle broke, from internal Corrosion of the Sterl Tube about where the Fibreglass Wheel-Spat was attatched ; and he flew through that SurPRISE !!!, to land safely. But naybe 5 years after that he was climbing out in a RANS which he'd put together for a Kit-Buyer, on the Maiden Test Fright, and at 500 ft it dived into the Ground - and if anyone knows why then I never heard of it. Control or Structural Failure would do it, as might a Myocardial Infarction and Cardiac Arrest ; but there were no Feathers, so it wasn't a Seagull.... It apparently doesn't matter how good a pilot one is, if the Hairygoplane delaminates while levitating and one is sitting therewithin. If you feel like an interesting giggle, guess which 63 yr-old is posting Chest-Camera footage of riding a road-registered 3,000 Watt Motocross Bike, on a Learner's Permit, alongside the Highway where the B-Doubles are doing 100 Km/hr and the Electric Chook-chaser only does 45 Km/hr. 24 minutes to town at full throttle, 30 minutes at best-range speed...; so it's a bit like being constantly on final approach , flying at 30 mph below Fence-height, being ovdrtaken by 60 ton Juggernauts at more than twice the poeed of the 2.3 Kw/Hr Lithium Incendiary Bomb on Wheels one is riding atop, tucked between one's knees. Kinda scary, feels really fast, and definitely not a boring way to save Petrol while collecting small groceries. But Motorcycle L-Plates at 63 is a bit of a shock..., one must admit. Such us life, Have a good one. Stay safe. ;-p Ciao !

What kind of adjustments & differences are there in a Helicopter like this one, and say, an aerobatic plane like Scotts, when flying solo, and flying with another person? Is it only weight adjustments? You may have mentioned something about this? But a few things cut-out on me- plus YT doesn't really like me much... so some of it might have been them.
@FlyWirescottperdue
@FlyWirescottperdue 2 месяца назад
For the average sized person I would think the adjustments you refer to would be minimal. I once took a 350lb fellow in the back seat of a T6…. That was not a good idea!

Maybe THAT helicopter has the capability but if you want to do aerobatics maybe a fixed-wing and a parachute are a better option. You hear a 'pop' in a helicopter and....ech!

Question/clarification - I think the FAR's require a parachute for every person on board during aerobatics (at least for fixed wings) I think what I'm seeing is shoulder harnesses fixed to the airframe? Is there a difference for rotary Wing aerobatics? Or is there something hidden from view that I'm not able to see in the video?
@FlyWirescottperdue
@FlyWirescottperdue 2 месяца назад
Parachutes in a helicopter? Just how would that work? If more than two in a fixed wing, yes. Why don’t you look it up yourself before typing?
@tailwheeldriver
@tailwheeldriver 2 месяца назад
Well let's see, If you pull a few extra G's that you weren't planning on, and the rotor knocks the boom off......then the whole thing becomes a flailing egg beater. I believe I'd rather depend on a parachute Then the alternative?
@tailwheeldriver
@tailwheeldriver 2 месяца назад
The concept doesn't really seem to be much different whether you're flying fixed Wing or rotor wing. If you over stress the airframe and a wing or a rotor wraps around the fuselage you may not ever get out? But if you can, I'd much rather be wearing a parachute.
@FlyWirescottperdue
@FlyWirescottperdue 2 месяца назад
@@tailwheeldriver It seems you just don't understand the physics involved. But you should wear a parachute the next time you go for an aoerbatics ride in a helicopter if it makes you feel better.
@FlyWirescottperdue
@FlyWirescottperdue 2 месяца назад
@@tailwheeldriver I see, you're an optimist, rather than a realist. Think about that eggbeater analogy and how violent the ride would become at that point. I suggest you skip the whole idea, stick with airplanes.
