You wear gloves so that you don't get sweaty fingerprints all over the model, and it also reduces the risk of getting glue prints from wayward fingers that have to be sanded out.

Another great build with a lot of useful tips. thanks Steve. if you go to your local tyre fitting shop, I'm sure they will give you some old balancing weights that they have removed from wheels when they change tyres. if you ask nicely.😜

Hearing about needing to paint things black takes me back, with slightly cruel nostalgia, to memories of Floquil paints--which had near a dozen different "black" paints.

For nose gear weights,I actually use car wheel balance weights,I do actually have more than a lifetimes worth of them,the local one man garage I used to take my car to get serviced and MOTd at was closing due to him retiring,he gave me 25kgs of balance weights.

Wow!! Airfix is really turning it up quite a few notches!! That molding looks awesome! Fit looks amazing, and even if you couldn't use them, the weight boxes were at least a nice thought. Beautiful work on the crew areas! It's not as simple getting visual variances on a "black" interior. Lol, and those are going to be LARGE models! Eagerly awaiting the next update!!

Pictures I have seen of a preserved AS.1 example with no restoration carried out and a well worn cockpit, shows the pilot seat which appears to be Bakelite in a reddish /dark brown colour (similar to later marks of Spitfires?) with leather padding for the pilots back, and the rear seats in black.
@TheModelShed
@TheModelShed 9 месяцев назад
Yes I think that’s probably correct. I think I misinterpreted the Airfix colour call out.

@@TheModelShed I was COD crew on the Hermes in the late 60's which was the courier gannet attached to 849 B flight but with a totally separate crew and the seats were as described above. The aircraft was a mk4 [modified] no rear radome for example and painted a dark blue [nearest colour I can find which matches my memory is Prussian blue] only problem I am finding though is that all the exterior decals are white so I will either have to paint by hand or make my own unless Hannants replenish their stock] Great build by the way I will build this one with the wings out and probably another one with them folded

Tungsten, while more expensive, is also denser than lead and might be a good substitute. Especially given that it isn't as toxic.

Looks like a candidate for a dedicated cast lead block. (I've heard bad things about the combination of lead and PVA. Aparently PVA can degrade to acetic acid, which attacks lead. The decomposition product is more voluminous, which can crack a fuselage open.) The nose gear is not what will have to take the brunt of the weight. You add enough weight to make sure the nose gear gets any load at all. So it's the main gear that has to be sturdy.
@TheModelShed
@TheModelShed 9 месяцев назад
True about the main gear - I’d forgotten my high school physics 😬
@carbonfly929
@carbonfly929 9 месяцев назад
Thinking about it, the *actual* weight that the nose gear has to endure is just a few grams as most of that 60 odd grams is counteracted by the weight of the rear of the aircraft.
@TheModelShed
@TheModelShed 9 месяцев назад
True I hadn’t thought of that
@peterwillstein198
@peterwillstein198 9 месяцев назад
Steve, OMG, some brilliant work and working out the weight issues was a tough act for sure. I just wonder if the gear is actually strong enough to support all the weight required to prevent the Gannet from being a tail sitter. I wonder why Airfix just didn't include a molded lead weight to fit the area after they had tested it. Of course, they could have also designed the gear legs to accommodate a s/s rod inside to add an extra measure of strength and peace of mind for the long haul.
@TheModelShed
@TheModelShed 9 месяцев назад
A metal cockpit and wheel bay would be a good solution - a bit like the Tamiya He219: but at additional cost no doubt.

I use curtain weights. Easy to cut. And liquid gravity is non toxic, i assume by that not lead so should be ok with pva. They recommend rocket card glue.

Another dodge for weighting model a/c is to make a mould of the pilot figures, and recast them in britannia or "lab" metal (a mix of tin, antimony, and copper). Mind, a sensible sort of casting metal may not be legally available in the UK due to H&S regs.
@TheModelShed
@TheModelShed 9 месяцев назад
If it’s illegal somewhere in the world you can bet we’ll be amongst them.
@CAPNMAC82
@CAPNMAC82 9 месяцев назад
Used to be, auto wheels were spin balanced with antimony-lead weights. This meant that the nearest tyre shop had a bucket of expended wheelweights just lurking about. Environmental Health has probably put paid to that, along with workplace Health & Safety. Fishing weights can be "mashed" with a heavy set of pliers, and beaten with a hammer, to "improve their geometry.
@HotelPapa100
@HotelPapa100 9 месяцев назад
I have a lifetime supply of balancing weights, most of them picked up from the road. Just make sure you don't breathe the fumes when casting; it's nasty stuff.
@TheModelShed

Fishing weights are useful - I squeezed a few in here topped up with the liquid gravity 👍

First time seeing weight added to an aircraft. Fortunately I haven’t had to add any weight to my builds, but now know how if I need it! Thanks again for tips and problem solving tail heavy aircraft’s. One thing I tried to get was double side tape for paint work. I did, but did the I purchased did not work. What double sided tape do you use in the UK?

Looks like a wonderful kit, Steve. I'm looking forward to following this double build with great anticipation. Will one have wings folded? I'll bet there's an AEW version over the horizon. I've seen railway modellers and diorame makers spray ballast, sand etc with LPA prior to the dil. PVA to facilitate its flowing round the particle. Would probably work on Liquid Gravity. Keep up the good work!

Well done with the figures who don't seem to have advanced much from the ones I first encountered from Airfix in 1969! Wouldn't the interior be an interior green primer though?

All black from photos I have seen, except for the pilots kick plates in front of the rudder pedals appear to be natural metal riveted to the floor.

No - black is correct for most 1950s UK aircraft. Shame as it hides detail 😞

I'm sorry I missed the live event, Steve. I also have two of the Gannet - for a similar reason as yours. Xtradecal have released three or four new sets for the Gannet and no matter what set you use, they're all very, errr, quite monotonal - though the Aussie versions look interesting. Are you going OOB for these kits, Steve?
@TheModelShed
@TheModelShed 9 месяцев назад
OOB Andy except for the belts. I like the three schemes in the kit - as you say the FAA schemes aren’t blessed with variation so I’m not bothered about laying out for aftermarket decals
