Watching this video is just strange for me (not in a bad way) - it takes me all the way back to being a boy excited to go to the local Model shop with Dad when Dad had agreed to open his wallet. The juxtaposition from that experience to watching a company release video showing what I can expect - it's a pretty cool feeling. What a time to be alive.
On our high street in the 1970s we had Woolworths for Airfix, a toy shop that sold Aurora, Revell, Monogram and Frog. And a newsagent that sold Matchbox kits. My dad never "opened his wallet" for plastic kits, as he believed that 'proper' model making was buying a pile of wood and a plan. Luckily I had my paper round to feed my addiction for boxes of plastic sprues. 😉
@@johnfellows2867 Oh yeah started at 2 bob for the railway oil tanks and 2s/6d for the smaller series one Spits, Hurricanes and 109's etc etc. I only got the bigger ones at Xmas
Well done Airfix thank you so much for being able to bring back some childhood classics and some new kits too love it…….Fairey Rotodyne you have no where to hide any more not even auction sites …….here I come 😈 (mad evil laugh ensues)
Watching this brought me back to my youth when I'd get given pocket money by an uncle every weekend and I'd go into Holyhead with him to a toy shop and do his absolute head in when I couldn't decide what to get. It was invariably an Airfix model. Remember building a Lancaster and B-17, as well as a Saab Viggen and a Flogger. There's a model shop that stocks Airfix not far from me. Really should make a trip down there soon.
Glad to see that Airfix is alive and well, and that model people are running it. There was a similar posting from Heller on YT last week. It was great to see that classic company back on its' feet again...
I grew up with Airfix...had my first kit when I was in an RAF hospital at 7 yrs old...now 60 yrs later still buying then...just brought the Spitfire Mk1X...24 scale...brilliant.
@@johnallen8670 That's awesome, in my opinion, then again I'm not so different. I fell in love with modeling at almost the same age as you. While I wasn't in the hospital it was in the wake of a hospital stay that I was introduced to the hobby. For me the kits I had access to were Monogram, Revell, Lindberg, Testors & some Hasegawa/Minicraft. It wasn't until my teens that I got access to Airfix, Italeri, Super Model, limited amounts of Heller kits, Matchbox kits, the very rare KP/Kopro kit & one anomalous VEB Plasticart kit. Most of my teen built British aircraft were either from Airfix or Matchbox. The only Spitfire I had at the time was from Hasegawa! (Of course I built kits of other nationalities produced by the two companies as well.) I had no history with FROG or Novo until I was already an adult & had access to the internet. FROG folded before I was of the age of awareness. I'm guessing that Novo was out of reach for the hobby shop owner that stocked the KP kits & that one VEB Plasticart TU-2 via trading with Eastern Bloc modelers? Were you ever involved in kit trading with such folk on the other side of the Iron Curtain? I always wondered how on Earth any of them got acquainted in the first place! For a long time I was a purist that stuck to 1/72 scale models, after branching out to 1/48 for just a handful of models, now I build 1/72 for everything from 1931-1945. Mostly 1/72 for everything from 1945-1981 save for large aircraft which I prefer to build in 1/144 purely out of space constraints.
@@johnallen8670 I'm 66, and my dad was a mad keen Aifix modeler and got me into it. He made scores of models, from medieval sailing ships (Francis Drake, Columbus) to WW2 aircraft and even models of wild birds (he was a big of an amateur ornithologist). In 1969, like thousands of other boys my age, I built a Saturn V rocket, (Apollo 11 to 17) it's predecessor Saturn 1B (Apollo missions in Earth orbit) and the lunar module. Good memories
Greetings from America. Thanks for reissuing the Rotodyne and the Bloodhound Missile. Please consider your Saunders Roe SR-N1 Hovercraft for a future Vintage Classic reissue. Thanks again!
@@MrPaulgroom No matter what they rerelease, there will be classics we would like to see again, that aren't included. Personally, I got excited at the WWI Dog-Fight Double rerelease, but there were quite a few others in the Dog-Fight Double WWI range I would like to see again.
Interesting that the Landrover Ute is called a pickup, I'm guessing this is to appeal to the American market since England and particularly Australia know them as a utility or ute.
the 3D render looks phenomenal. I made the Trumpeter 1:72 and while ok from the outside, there is no interior detail to speak of. I think I will be sorely tempted by this one this year!
Why did Hobbycraft stop stocking? Difficult to find a stockist close to me now, which is a shame cos I generally like the kits :) Before you say buy online, I like to see and touch first :)
Sorry about this, we are unable to go into detail on this subject. We would certainly like to see Airfix in Hobbycraft store. We appreciate that people like to see the product before purchasing and have started a series of unboxing videos.
Too many people buy online and put LHSs out of business. That includes Airfix selling their kits directly I'm lucky to have a LHS 100 yards up the road, but they are struggling to keep afloat. Also you can't have a good old chinwag at online stores and they don't make you a cup of tea lol
@@OfficialAirfix Currently a 30/40 mile round trip to closest shop with a decent up-to-date Airfix selection ;) Happy to have a sample or 2 of the new kits to keep me amused :P
It's pretty well documented that they couldn't come to an agreement over discounting - Hobbycraft's business depends on them being competitive pricewise with online but with extra overheads that running a store entail. Airfix wouldn't go low enough for Hobbycraft so that was that.
Bond Bug and Blood hound. Hopefully the correct orange paint will be recommended. Excellent work. Cannot wait. Would love to see the Captain Scarlett Angel planes come back
Great stuff here - from the picture Derwent dam on the box art of the Lancaster/F-35 set through to some tempting re-releases! My first impulse buy will be the Gannet, mainly as my Uncle served on both carriers mentioned at the time Gannets were flying. I've just finished the starter set Gnat (thank you LIDL!) and would love to make another, so that's number two on the list... and number three? Well it could be the Great Western!
When are you going to address the issue of a new tool HP Halifax? We've had the Whitley, Lancaster and Wellington, but the Halifax and Stirling seem to be continually overlooked. Even so, I expect I'll be spending more of my pension pounds with you in the coming twelve months.
At last I can stop searching for Bug, a car I've always wanted since childhood. Its the only way Ill get one now, -or three! A new DB5, and a couple of other performance cars for a bit of fun, but I hope that they might be made up to to the adult 1/24 scale in the future. And there is a series 1 lwb pickup. - but why 1/43 scale. 1/35 and civvy and Army models could be produced. Still wont stop me buying a couple. Buccaneer on the shopping list, and a rotodyne or two, at least one Ferret scout car to go with a growing collection of reccy vehicles...... I'm quite happy its not all spitfires for a change. Now about the motorcycles you used to do..........the Suzuki MX bike is crying out for classic reissue status.
It is fantastic that you are putting the R&D into reverse-engineering the clear parts for classic releases. When I heard that for Auster Antarctic, I was immediately sold! I suspect this is in response to customer feedback (I've had good and bad experiences with vintage classics; the bad is pretty much always because of unsalvageable clear parts). It is awesome and hugely admirable that you are listening and rather than get defensive, actually making changes as a result. Bravo!
Some of those kits are very good dimensions-wise and only need a little sprucing up. Some newly tooled transparencies and edits of the original moulds to create recessed panel lines would be all you need to ostensibly create a "new" tool out of an old one for market. Surprised Airfix haven't considered this if I'm honest.
I like the Classic kits too, I went "full geek" on the Sherman Crab for example. One of Airfix's most interesting kits. That Auster means that I will have to finally have a go at doing a snow scene. Eek!
Nothing new for 1.72 scale ww2 vichales just the same old stuff. What happened to this company it use to be the go to place for kits can't remember the last time I purchased their catalogue to read up on the new stuff. And calling it a classic is no different than putting a repeat on tv for the 100th time by just sticking the word classic in the title its a shame airfix was once such a good company but them days are long gone...
Some great re introductions. The Bloodhound missile for instance, built two sets to go on my then train set!! FE2A, was a favourite of my father. All round exciting 👍👍👍
Well done on the new 1/48 Gannet it looks like a great kit, this is a very good year for fans of 1/48 scale British aircraft. Personally as a 1/72 devotee I'm pretty disappointed. No new tool 1/72 Hampden or Manchester. But the 1/72 PR Mossie update is a very nice release.
Well done Airfix thank you so much for being able to bring back some childhood classics and some new kits too love it…….Fairey Rotodyne you have no where to hide any more not even auction sites …….here I come 😈 (mad evil laugh ensues)
3rd comment I've seen for this item Dan so there seems to be a few of us out there at least! Your absolutely right about the cockpit (and pilot?) but, if they were going to do this, they could take the opportunity to go bigger - 1/32 or even 1/24? Hmm, a 1/24 Superkit of the Angel Interceptor - wouldn't that be something. And, of course, we'd all have to buy three of them.......!
The vintage Brewster Buffalo is a must-have for me. Airfix, you are making it possible to actually live my nostalgic memories of childhood plastic model kit building! Keep up the great work!
Yes..Yes..Yes..I thought the Gannet would be in Airfix’s scope..Makes perfect sense and will be a winner..Well done Airfix and a big massive thank you.!!!!!!🇬🇧👍🇬🇧👍🇬🇧👍🇬🇧👍🇬🇧👍
Disapointing for me. With the exception of the 'relivery' of the 1:72 Buccaneer & Phantom. The F-35 doesn't look up to the standard which an experienced modeller would expect.
Terrible release schedule for 1/72, not a single kit worth buying, already own 2 Buccaneers & 2 Phantoms. Seems like we need to rely more on the far east & eastern Europe.
The Ferret Scoutscar we could always see when I was in the UN 🇺🇳 Force for the Austrian 🇦🇹 contingent. The British comrades always had their rest in our camp Izay in Athienou Cyprus. Greetings from Linz Austria 🇦🇹 Europe!
Me: "I'm focussing on 1:35th and modern tools only now." Also me: "The Bond Bug's back? IT MUST BE MINE." So much for resolutions. The Ferret, DB5, and British Army truck make me happy, too. Relaunch the Little Nelly gyrocopter next year and I shall be beside myself with glee.
@@MrFlix76 why have uncensored box art and not have correct decals? It's not weird I just like my models to be accurate. I get aftermarket decals but 1/24 could be problematic thats all so if I'm shelling out nearly a hundred quid for a model I want it to look like the real thing. If that's 'weird' then yes I suppose I am.
I remember your 1/72 scale military model kits from sixty years ago. They were packaged in small plastic bags and were cheap and fun to build. Thank you Airfix!
Just a suggestion; many people like to display their collections of diecast model cars in home made dioramas. Why not make accessory sets for such people, ideally for various decades, and including such things as normal civilians, racing car personnel, garage staff. In addition such things as oil cans and drums, petrol pumps, trolley yacks, work benches and tools and so on. There is a market for such items mostly catered for by small suppliers using die castings or plastic but their price point is often high and the quality varies tremendously. I think that with your high quality standards and reasonable pricing you could capture a lot of this market and expand it. Why not start off with 1:43 scale sets for the 1950's and or 1960's? I think they would be popular with collectors of period diecast models as well as those who favour modern releases of classic cars.
It's a shame 1/24 scale cars and vehicles weren't more support. It's the perfect scale between 1/43 and 1/18 where high details can be added and doesn't take the same shelf space as 1/18.
I wish Airfix would release a 1/350 scale models of WW1 era ships like HMS King George V, HMS Invisible, HMS Queen Mary, HMS Queen Elizabeth, SMS Derfflinger, SMS Baden Baden. There is much interest in seeing these model ships created. One can only hope.
Congratulations Airfix with the very nice selection of New kits. Fantastic choices, this will be a expensive year for me 🙂,and a lot of other modelers. Hope you are able to produce them in the new plastic used on the New 1/72 Meteor, it makes the kits perfect.
Absolutely brilliant announcements Airfix, something there for everybody,I defy anybody to have a whinge. Top ones for me are the Gannett, the Rotodyne and all of the Vintage Classics! Clearly a lot of thoughts going into the product range and this is certainly a good sign for the future of air fix
just take your time with a model. It's not a race and leave parts to dry properly. It takes time to be good at any hobby and this is not exception, and the enjoyment of the model that you've built is why we do it
You carry on enjoying building them . That's fine . Try adding a little detail . With the cars you can start to customise them . There are other 'clip-together' kits that should be cheap enough for you to practise getting and honing your skills . Take your time , and enjoy our fantastic hobby . If or when you get stuck 🙄, leave it for a while . Perhaps start another one if you can . Aim to improve , but don't set your goal too high or you'll get frustrated . How about looking for a model with a low number of difficulty 'stars' , i e , not too many parts . That's not a guarantee , but it's a way forward . Pick a model of a plane you like the look of . Check it's got one star if possible , and look out for the many y/t videos to help called 'how to's . Some go right back to basics and that is a great start . Preferably , you will need a work area , a selection of tools , glues and paints , and don't forget , you can't buy this , patience . All the best . Pete
Will the F35 kits have parts that don't fit, can't be obtained, and then kit tooling is re-done so that you have to buy an entirely new kit of the same aircraft that also won't work or be able to be put together properly? This is important if it's going to give the modeller the True F35 Experience. :-) ;-)
And Still we wait for a 1:48 Sepecat Jaguar (single seat and/or 2 seat versions), plus 2 seat Harriers. Can Airfix make 1:72 (not 1:76!) or 1:48 RAF ground equipment for use in dioramas, even better still a HAS? And finally, has Airfix stopped making 1:144 scale kits, civil or military?
Here, here!!!!! I posted a similar request ("find the original Lyons Maid molds for the Stingray and XL5") before coming across a post for the new 2023 Corgi range which includes a die cast Stingray submarine!!!!!!! Given Corgi is also part of the Hornby group, this could be a great opportunity - buy the diecast and maybe Airfix might consider a plastic version (3 vehicle set with a terror fish and Agent X20 included!!!!)........?
Love the kits you make but, please Airfix put proper pilots in your kits, not generic plastic blobs with hands on laps and mask off, but inflight posed and made to fit the particular kits seat.
Pretty exciting to see Airfix alive and well. Reminds me of my first Airfix kit in a bag with money I had saved from my weekly allowance 59 years ago. Bought it on Monday with a tube a Britfix, Humbrol paint the shopkeeper recommended for that kit and some brushes. Got it together by Wednesday, paint hardly dry and sagging a bit on its landing gear because the Britfix wasn't given enough time to harden out... a beginners mistake.. I was too excited to get it finished. Wished I still had that same excitement as I had as a kid but with a paralyzed left arm and only one arm to handle the model since a brain hemorrhage 15 years ago I never could find that same excitement but I recommend Airfix for keeping us happy and excited... I will buy some of these nevertheless.... if only to support them...
Do you remember the instructions "locate and cement??" I must've got my first airfix kits around the same time you did. My dad would come home from work on a Thursday (pay day) with an airfix kit and the first ones I remember are Typhoon, Mig 15 and of course a Spitfire. Xmas 1964 I got Caravelle and Comet airliners. But because my dad was an ex Lancaster rear gunner I preferred WW1 and WW2 aircraft, tanks and ships.
@@larry4789 I don't remember much of that time because of a brain hemorrhage 15 years ago but enough to remember how excited I was... we would get an allowance on Sunday for doing chores.... only a few franks (I lived in Belgium and the frank was still our currency) after a few weeks saving it I would have enough to afford a baggie from Airfix, would ride my bike to the hobby shop 10 miles away and buy one.... I. remember a Hurricane, a Folland Gnat and a Beagle Basset as some of my first ones.. My first kit in a box was an P-4J Phantom of VF-74 with those red flashes on the fuselage from Airfix... like the others...bought on Monday...finished on Wednesday.... but I had a blast....
Nice range for this year, defintly a few i will buy but strange no helicopters in any scale (and no,the Rotodyne is NOT a helicopter) and no armour or military vechilles in 1/72 or 1/76 for this year.🤔🤔
Lots of great stuff there but I'm still waiting for a Triumph TR-6. Larger scale is best but I'll take anything at all. Nobody has ever made a TR-6 kit, except for one really rough metal body in small scale. Include options for left hand drive for us Americans that own the real thing. Oh, and make the silly North American required rubber bumpers optional! Please!
Hi when are you going to re-release some of the old 1/32 figures like Waterloo, Wildwest, knights, French Foreign Legion, Arabs, or Space warriors etc.... thanks
A big well done to you guys, super stuff, can't wait for the Austin truck I've got 2 Katy ambulance,s witch I haven't got to building yet but I can assure you that they will be on the next to do list . Well done again.,👍.
I fell in love with Airfix all the way back in 1991 when I spotted the catalog among those at the local hobby shop. The shop had long since been able to request them from their importer but had NEVER stocked them before. My goodness the excitement to discover the Typhoon, Tempest, Defiant, Halifax, Mosquito, Wellington (okay not so much that one; was rather put off by that kit,) etc. I had to have them all of course! It seemed every month I was having the hobby shop owner order up another 2~3 kits.
YIPPPPPEEEE!!! a 1/48 Fairey Gannet, new mould! Bond Bug & the Great Western-,(as a boy who has been making models since 1970 age 7 "still a BOY)" NICE!!.
