As a kid in the early 70's I used to wait with anticipation for the new Airfix catalogue to arrive at our local model shop. I'd cycle home on collecting it and eagerly flick through the pages to find the 'NEW' stars alongside the newly added model kits.

50+ year old memories! I have a Mk1 Spitfire to build which was the first one I built as a young lad. I was born in Bromley, Kent, but now live about 1.5 miles from the original Hornby factory. What made me buy it is that it has the markings of a RAF Biggin Hill based fighter which is very close to Bromley, and where I have visited many times in the past. RAF Manston is near where I live now, and they have a fantastic Spitfire and Hurricane museum that I urge everyone to visit. RAF Hawkinge near Folkestone is also a magnificent venue.

Well done Airfix you will never please everyone especially in the modelling world, but some interesting new and remarked stuff. For my area of interest B 24 is very welcome, I think the Beaufort will sell well in those markings, Whitley is a great kit. Like the snap together tanks for young modellers great to them into the hobby.

Really good to see the "Uncensored" box art coming back - I have an Airfix book should all the original box art relating to WWII combat action aircraft - it was a real shame that items were airbrushed out but so nice to see it coming back as it was in both real life and PRE PC... I do hope you intend to do this for all you releases going forward.

@@petercollingwood522 I assumed that they simply wanted to move the brand more towards 'technical' than 'action'. Also what makes you assume that it is "unable" rather than "they decided not to"? Have you ever been to the Air Show on Sicily? It's really interesting: instead of aerobatics there's a lot of 'planes flying past slowly with flaps open so you can see all the mechanical bits'. People get different things out of aircraft. Also it's not "reality". Reality would be a photo of the model or the real plane.

I don't expect Airfix have changed anything with the Severn-Class Lifeboat re-issue, unfortunately. I have just built one from my stash and it is an appalling kit. Warped hull, poor fit (gaping hole in the hull around the lateral propeller), lack of clarity in the instructions. One of the worst kits I have built in 40 years of modelling. The box says skill level 2 which is ridiculous, this kit is well beyond the ability of a novice to make the necessary corrections. Such a shame Airfix continually sit so low in the quality tables against Tamiya and the modern manufacturers.

Airfixx are really getting better every year. The last 3 kits I've made were Airfix. The 1/48 Lighthing F1. Their 1/48 Spitifre MK14 converted to a high back, and the 1/48 Sea Vixen. All look amazing. I wish Airfix would design proper crew figures though and not generic on file ones with hands on laps and oxygen masks off. I would love to see a 1/350 HMS Victory, with loads of photo etch. Even though it would be small it could be displayed with other ships of the same scale.

The H model Liberator is a very smart choice. The old Academy kit was reasonable for its time, but had a J model nose with the H model turret, so it is about time we had an accurate one. I'm sure it will be tooled to allow future releases of other variants. Perhaps even a Coastal Command one?

Nice. The two 1/76 Guards band and colour party is great. I´m just about to start making a series on the HO scale figures starting from 1959 and doing one video for every year onward with every HO figure set released that year. Just missed an almost mint first set of guards in pink but I´m still on the hunt so I can start the series. These two sets will be a fun comparison to make. Then I will make videos on the nine sets of 1/32 scale that were realesed in brown boxes. It´s gonna be a fun next few months. Looking forward to the two sets :)
@jefthing
@jefthing 5 месяцев назад
I was cheered by the Guards and they are in red too. I think the early “pink” sets may be a myth. They were always moulded in red but the early ones were not colour fast and could fade if kept in extreme conditions. Really looking forward to your videos, though. And I still have my first Airfix figures: Type 1 8th Army from 1970.
@toysoldiernostalgia

I have heard that to but in my mind they would not be evenly faded in color between sets and even within sets. I it was a matter of fading I think there would be more variation. @@jefthing

Slick presentation and very informative. Well done Airfix; I hope these will do well in 2024. B24 is the highlight for me but I like all the new starter sets as well, especially the RNLI offering. Re-releases - great new schemes for Gladiator, Tiger Moth, MIG 17 and the especially wonderful Beaufort, I'll certainly take on another. The Meteor FR9 club kit was one of my 2023 favourites. Maybe a Vintage Classic ship for the list?

Loving the Lifeboats, especially as the Range has grown......I’ll be having both of these! 👍🏻👍🏻 Thank you for wheeling back out the HP Hampden....old but very do’able.....and I’ll be having that as well! 🤪 Re Lifeboats: It would be a massive thing if you could, as a new kit, introduce a Watson Class Lifeboat to the fleet. My reason for asking is this: In 1981, the Penlee Lifeboat “The Solomon Browne” (which was a Watson Class Lifeboat), went to the assistance of the MV Union Star. Despite the ferocity of the weather, the virtual beaching of the Union Star and knowing full well, that the situation was irreconcilable, the Coxswain Trevelyan Richards, made every attempt at rescuing all souls that were aboard the Union Star. He and his Crew almost succeeded but were cheated by mechanical failure (obstructed propellors). Without power and in hurricane force conditions, all lives were lost..... ....it would be a very honourable thing if, some 44 years later, we could remember the RNLI in general, through such a model in 2025? Thank you to all of you! ❤️
@narlokeill736
@narlokeill736 5 месяцев назад
Here, here. That's a fantastic idea. I have a lot of respect for the RNLI. The Severn kit was a real challenge. I think the hull was very tricky to get right. Perhaps the new release has this updated a bit
@richardbaxter2057

@@narlokeill736 Thank you! Coming from a seaside town originally (Whitstable), so have I. The Crews, nationally, are absolutely the best, along side all of our Services, Armed and otherwise and generally a microcosm of our society as well. A Watson Class Boat, especially if paired with a Sea King Helicopter, would be even better. On the night, Rescue Eight Zero, From 820 Naval Air Squadron, flown by LtCDR Russell Smith, United States Navy, was prevented from rescuing the souls aboard the Union Star due to the excessive rise and fall of the ship. Rescue Eight Zero remained “on Station” until LrCDR Smith believed that the Penlee Boat was pulling away and ceasing its attempts at further rescue, so they weren’t privy to the actual destruction of the Solomon Browne. As far as stories of the truly heroic go, none in my humble opinion, surpass that of Trevelyan Richards and his Crew. The very best of us who were foiled at the very last. I was Thirteen at the time and it left a deep impression on me.

Very impressed the boys from Airfix!!! How hard to choose what is viable and of interest to a hobby audience so varied in tastes,age groups and competence. Love the Liberator,just thinking recently how few B-24 options there are out there available or just long in the tooth. Bulldog bring back memories of a childhood build,what a detailed kit in my fav scale 1/48. Huge fan of the Beaufort and the schemes are perfect,the Eurofighter was a great idea as the Chinook in again perfectly chosen markings. Would be nice to have 3 decal choices in the larger scales. Whitley gratefully received and lovely idea with the Lifeboat and proceeds going to the heros who protect our shores. Impressive markings on the ' Glad' and late Spit too plus the Tiger and Shermans making another mark in bigger scale. Huge P-40 fan so another excuse to go shopping and great to see the Swift. Part of british jet evolution.Vey happy to see we can now add the Hampden to our Blenheim and Beaufort for lighter twin engined bombers.Well done Gentleman,you cant please everyone all the time and us impatient picky lot can remember that there will be more to come. Great to see the Shannon lifeboat. Would be great if the launching tractor/trolley were also available. Airfix missed out on that potential for a great diorama. And yes, some RNLI crew please! Otherwise, same old same old. The Supermarine Scimitar needs modelled. Absent in the Airfix catalogue since . . . oh, yes, forever. 1/48 preferably, but 1/72 would be good. Maybe it will be this year's surprise 1/24 scale Christmas release! Not nearly enough non-military subjects - aircraft, ships, cars. eg Skyvan, BN Islander. Vintage cars. A 1/150 Mary Rose (okay, it was a warship). A 1/350 Mauretania or Canberra, or one of the classic 1970s Sealink ferries.

Would like to see a few more cold war jets rather than usual WW2 allstars.

I'll be picking up the RNLI boats, the Chinook and the Bulldog I think and interested in what you're keeping quiet about this year. There's a definite Op Granby theme through a lot of these releases recently so a new Tonka and Jag must be on the roadmap somewhere, hopefully in 1/48th

A good selection for this year, especially those with new molds.

Grew up on the west coast of the Pacific, my pop was involved in the Korean war, and grew up on Frog , Airfix, and Hawk model kits (Yes I'm old)Just got My hands on the 1/72 scale Vulcan! What a kit!, outside of real crew members, I was invited into the cockpit and the coal hole. My take-away was the smell, Every jet has a smell, The Vulcan was unique...

Lot's of 1/72 which is nice, looking forward to the Chinook, B-24 and Meteor PR9 releases but a bit dissapointed that the new typhoon FGR4 is only a starter kit and not a full blown kit like the phantom, buccaneer and lightning. Still very nice looking releases, good job.

Thank you Dale. A very tasty list, particularly Ajax (which I was only thinking about the other day). Think if you brought out Exeter (or brought back Sulfolk for the conversion) we could make a "River Plate Set". Hooray for P1127 and Belvedere that I missed first time around. There certainly are some very interesting new projects in my mind now. Incidentaly, you mentioned the Belvedere comming in exciting times, but as a follow up, Bristol sold the rights to the tandem helicopter work to Boeing Vertol from which many derivatives have followed. This sort of makes the Chinnook (another release) the great great (however many greats) grandchild of the Belvedere. Keep it up Airfix.

A 'River Plate' set for the 85th anniversary at the end of the year would be a great idea.

Thanks for the video. Hoping that these new products will make our young people want to make models with their hands. I started in the 70s with Airfix in nylon bags :o)

Being a predominately Sailing ship modeller (plastic & wood) i havent bought anything from Airfix for a number of decades due to the fact that i have built all the Sailing ships and most of the warships you have produced. However i always tune in to your release updates in hope. That said the 2 Lifeboat kits caught my eye as its a charity i give to regularly and i like the detail on them which is a big must for me, so i have actually pre ordered these 2 kits now, but would still like the company to releases 1 new sailing ship as there is a hell of a lot of us modellers out there obviously depending on the ship choice but have no doubts that the company would make a profit on this after production costs, just dont forget about us period Navy guys n gals. Btw the 2 Lifeboats look Awesome 👌 👏

I like the life boat release. I usually don’t make boats or ships and being from the United States. I don’t know much about the RNLI but I think that is going to be a nice build.

It's different from the US system in a few interesting ways. Offshore patrol and icebreaking is done by the Navy. Lights and navigation markers by the Lighthouse Board(s). UK Border Force has its own cutters for tax and crime etc. As a result life saving is done by the Royal National Lifeboat Institute, who use small and tough little boats for their specialised rescue ops. The iconic color scheme is a mix of royal blue and bright 'international orange'
