July 30, 2020----This is why I love the older Airfix kits and bought many of them when I came back to the states from Panama in '74. To me, the best thing about them is you can build 'em out of the box and they'll look good/okay. But if you want to improve your modeling skills, these are the kits to build. I've seen a couple of magazine articles (decades ago), in that the U.S. Army Air Force also used some of them, though don't remember if the Army was simply trying them out for possible use or they were used in combat. In one of my magazines, there's one for sale after the war at Chino, Calif. where it was probably scrapped. And glad you built one that was not U.S. Navy. As to this kit, everyone should check to find a local IPMS modeling club as I've picked up a lot of kits for about 1/4 to 1/2 a stores price and a heck of a lot cheaper than Evilbay. I think your build looks great just out of the box. Part of it's because modelers now days want nothing but shake and bake kits.....and of course, ya gotta pay the price for them. The days of Airfix kits going for $3 is over unless you find them at a modeling club meeting or convention. And yes, I have gotten them for $5 (average price) at the IPMS modeling club and when they have their yearly modeling contest. Thanks for the video.
Great build and review Matt! I agree, the kit is old and needs to be retooled. Hopefully Airfix will do this one as well as the TBD-1 Devastator and the OS2U Kingfisher. Thanks for the tutorial.

Awesome! Revell has a 1/48th SBD Dauntless that can actually drop the bomb mounted on the fuselage when a lever is pulled, but it doesn't show this function anywhere on the box or instuctions.
The Revell kit is the old Monogram kit. Monogram had a whole series of 1/48 aircraft with working (play!) features. The old instructions actually told how you and all your friends could get your models together and see who could drop the bombs the most accurate! Of course we don't play with our models anymore....
Also remember building the 1/48 Monogram Avenger with all the working features with my grandfather when I was about 8. Think that's what got me hooked on modelling. Thanks Grandpa!
orbitalair thanks for the tip. From my research the crews gave the SBD the nickname “slow but deadly” due to its low cruising speed of 185mph and max speed of 225 mph. At a time when aircraft were regularly reaching 300+mph the SBD was considered slow in comparison. Despite not being designed as a fighter, speed is still a critical factor in surviving in combat and as a result all its replacements were designed to be faster
Great little build. Ive just got this kit off E bay and will refer back to this video for the build that you did. Will probably be doing it in the American scheme as Iam doing a lot of small planes from the Pacific theater
Great vid just subscribed been watching your videos for a while now only just got around to subscribing as mobile you tube was messing up for me i have not made any kits for a long time but im getting back into it after watching vids again you did a good job its good to see models which are not overly done with detail sometimes.
MILITARIA COLLECTOR 2000 thanks for subscribing! I like to try and make my builds as accessible as possible, particularly for those who have less experience or are just starting out. As wonderful and amazing some of the work on the more “pro” channels, I feel that beginners watching them get disheartened because they may struggle to reach the same results
@@ModelMinutes yeah i agree i was like that at first and still am cos i saw so much detail on videos and all other things and i didn't understand it all and felt i wasn't good if it was basic i understand its up to the person of the model how much detail but i still feel like it now that its never good enough compared to people who make them really detailed and i think thats what pushes model makers away as to others who are new or just like basic builds its not simply building painting anymore as what people did i just like simple builds as its easy to understand and basic which i like.

Nice build and video. You should try your hand on the Airfix Bf 109E-4 in 72, either the one with decals for Hans von Werra's plane of the one in the Dogfight Double with the Spit Mk.Ia.
That's a good idea! I reviewed the Bf 109E-3 in the very early days of my channel, and I think i've got a Bf 109G-6 in my stash somewhere . . .just gotta find the time lol
15:34. 9 usd for the retail price is the same price as a p51 from my nearby hobby lobby, and if the dauntless was put on shelves it would go for 13 usd in my nearby hobby lobby, but if only 13 usd kits at the my nearby hobby lobby store where 9 bucks. But wow you got that kit for 4 usd which is a crazy good price for the kit

I have been chasing this kit without success. I think Airfix should make a new mould for this kit. The Hasegawa one is nice but expensive for a 1/72. I ended up buying the 1/48 from Academy. Not my favorite scale but it is a very nice kit with cartograph decals, tape masks and PE seat belts.
Joyce Kirkpatrick hmm, sometimes this happens if the plastic is particularly smooth and glossy. A primer (like I did in this video) can help the next layer stick properly. Remember that a number of thin layers of paint is better than one thick one ☺️
I just finished this model today a down side is the lack of detail inside I did the free France with green and brown CAMO don’t think it’s accurate but I like it
I did the exact same paint scheme with my Airfix SBD, though had to source a different canopy from a Testors ex-Hawk SBD (mold was about as old as the airfix one) as the one that came with the kit was miss cased and did not have details for the frames.
Carl Whitfield I thought that, but when the decals are slid off the backing paper they are white on the other side. Following the instructions this is the result that you get. Perhaps the spares you saw were from a different manufacturer who got the colour right? I looked online when I built this kit and it is a fault on Airfix’s part as many other people have the same problem
great video! problem with this type of scale is that none of my kits can match with the scale ;-; meaning I cant create an accurate diorama edit:diarama
You can totally do a 1/72 and 1/76 mixed scale diorama! The actual differences between the scales is quite small. It might be noticeable if you had the same tank in each scale, but for different items it wouldn't be so obvious. I know i've mixed the two before - and railway modellers (OO gauge is 1/76) tend to mix the two
Don't know if you're going to pick up on this being as I'm 4 years late. lol As far as I know, this is the first time you've mentioned aftermarket parts. At this point I've not seen you use photoetch, white metal, resin or vacuum form parts in your builds. Do you have plans on doing so?
I used some PE in the Eduard spitfire some years back. I've also used extra masking sheets on my P40 from Airfix recently and I expect that as time progresses I will add extra things to various models - but aftermarket parts can sometimes cost just as much as the kit itself so I can't always afford it
