Hi RU-vid,
In this video I am building the new Airfix de Havilland Vampire in 1/48th scale. This build is an ideal watch for anyone new to modelling as I keep this one very simple, straight out of the box with no upgrades or scratch building (except for 3 Remove before flight tags).
In the video I use a mix of Mr Hobby, Tamiya, AK Interactive, Abteilung 502, Ammo by Mig, Vallejo and Microscale Industries products. I use AK Xtreme Metal paints to paint the main surfaces of the model and most of the weathering is done using my favorite Abteilung 502 oils.
All products used I paid for myself and there is no paid promotion in the video.
Please keep comments pleasant, constructive or helpful criticism is fine, but anything rude or abusive will be deleted. This is not my day-job, I model and make these videos for enjoyment and I am far from being a professional modeller.

Although this kit is a bit over my usual budget, your build has convinced me I need to add this to my collection (in RCAF livery, of course) First time watching, and I really enjoyed it.

@@MTAviation123 I haven't seen a ten dollar model kit (even 1/72 armour or 1/144 aircraft) in years! But, yeah, I'm probably in the $20 -$40 range. Since my comment, I did purchase the kit and will probably finished it soon. I'm a very slow builder

Why drill holes into the lower wing? To attach the drop tanks? There's 4 holes and two drop tanks?

Awesome build. Great channel, love all the work. But the Vampire didn't have any rivets did it? I thought the whole point of DH was aerodynamics and streamlining? I stand to be corrected

Yes, definitely rivets (faintly) visible on the metal areas - wings, tail, tail booms and panels over the engine. Forward fuselage was plywood, like the Mossie.

Awesome finish. For those manufacturers issues on the HUD, I cut them off and use the clear plastic from the random "adult proof" packaging of everyday stuff we buy. Works great and is easy to work with.

Awesome Vampire mate, theres one as a gate guardian at Ohakea airbase near where I live, here in NZ. A local businessman also has a restored Venom which he gets out and flies regularly. I've got a few 1/72 CMK, Heller, and Special Hobby Vampires/Venoms in the stash.

After you finish with Rosie the Rivetter, how do you clean up the rivets?
@ScaleModelShed
@ScaleModelShed 2 года назад
Hi, I didn't do any clean up here, I guess it depends how hard you press and how deep you make them. A bit of soft sand paper and an air brush to blow the dust out would work if you need to clean the surface of them. Cheers

First let me say that is a wonderful looking model! However, can someone help me understand the fascination with rivet details. I have worked on warbirds in real world environments. First 99.9% of surface rivets are flush. Second if you are viewing from a foot away the scaled distance you will not see them or most panel lines unless its in an area that gets really dirty. I think sometimes when doing research the line drawings we find fool us into thinking rivets and panel lines are readily visible.
@65TossTrap
@65TossTrap 2 года назад
By the early forties aircraft were really smooth. What I see at air shows in daylight, is a "dimple". Not really a rivet but an impression.

Further to my previous comment, it looks like (at least for delivered to Australia prices) "Liquid Gravity" comes in about half the price of what Chinese sellers are pricing tungsten putty at by weight. This doesn't include the slight cost of binding epoxy required for the "Liquid Gravity" in some cases. The AU$4.50 for 22grams does seem a bit expensive.

Small cheer here for "...not going to be adding a pilot." How can we see modern, more detailed, cleverly engineered models and still have a blob for a pilot with arms stuck to his legs like a 1/72 model from the 60s?! A figure with separate legs/ torso/ head and a choice of arms could make some really cute diorama effects but that seems like too much work for almost all manufacturers, where the driver is a complete afterthought.

Thank you for this wonderful video. Question. I really hate riveting compound surfaces. I never get them right. To my eyes the "dimples" on the real thing are hardly noticeable. Do you think I could get away with riveting the wings but not the fuselage? Thank you.

Outstanding result you achieved there. Really like the slight weathering job you applied, too- I'm of the opinion that most people weather the hell out of their kits, but hey, it's theirs, so whatever gets you through the day. Love the effect this brought to yours, though. Funnily enough, I had just recently watched a short video on the Sea Vixen, and the Vampire was referenced a few times, as well. While there were enough stylistic differences to tell them apart, you could definitely see the family resemblance. Appreciate the videos as always, and have a great week.

Nice, but you mentioned that the Polished Aluminum paint was a good representation of the real aircraft's aluminum. The Vampire was actually painted overall in High Speed Silver.

Hi, Thank you for the comment. I didn't know what the finish was, so thanks for letting me know. If I wanted an actual polished finish, I would have put it onto a gloss black to make it look polished. My thinking was purely that the tone of the polished aluminium, onto a flat surface, was a good representation. Thanks for watching. Andy

Hi there. A few months down the track since this build, I wondered how your nose cone on this build was behaving with the tungsten putty? I have used some heavy plasticene in the past to prevent tail sitting, however it reacted with the plastic over time and ruined the model. I am going to order some tungsten putty and give it a try as I have previously also used "Liquid Gravity" (commercial product) mixed with epoxy, however this stuff is much more expensive than what tungsten putty appears to be. Would it be possible to mix a lead sinker weight core with the putty, I wonder? I guess I can try that too. Any thoughts? BTW, thanks for posting these videos - it's very much appreciated.

I’m currently building this and if mine finishes like this i will be very pleased, it might be new tooling but its typically airfix the cockpit is very basic and the join line around the nose will take a lot of securing to attempt to conceal the gap as the front upper sides springs out a lot.
@ScaleModelShed

great build. Recently found your channel and loving your work. I have heard negative comments about AK extreme metals and how long they take to dry, given their similar to enamels, otherwise you risk rubbing the paint off. Have you had negative experiences and if you don't mind confirming how long did you leave it before handling again. Need to get some Rosies for my future Hind build but never done that befroe, so was good to se them in action and added great detail. Many thanks and keep up the great and informative builds.

Hi Mark, then only time I have ever had an issue with Xtreme metal is when I didn't shake them enough. All the sediment at the bottom needs to be mixed in. I really dries pretty quickly, but after painting I normally leave it until the next day anyway. One thing I don't know is what they are like with decal solutions etc, I've always sealed it with a varnish first. Thanks, Andy
