An aircraft that must surely be considered one of the most distinctive types to have ever seen Fleet Air Arm service, the Fairey Gannet was as capable as it was unique and was significant as the only post-war military contract to be won by the famous Fairey Aviation Company. Arguably the most unconventional Fairey designed aircraft to enter full production, the Gannet was developed in response to a 1945 Royal Navy requirement for an advanced carrier-based, turboprop-powered anti-submarine hunter-killer, one which was rugged enough to withstand the rigors of operation at sea.

I've built my Gannet and must congratulate you on the fantastic job you've done in designing it. The level of detail is astounding, everything fitted together perfectly without any problems and there are plenty of options: gear up or down, wings folded or not, weapons bay open or closed... It builds into a very impressive model and is one of the nicest kits to build that I've ever had. Absolutely superb!

Congratulations Paramjit for designing this wonderful kit , and thanks for incorporating so many new clever ways to help us getting a god result. The perfect surface details hits your eyes, the moment you open the box.Thanks to Airfix for producing 3 nice decal options printed by Cartograf. It doesn't get any better. This kit deserves to be a Classic, and two kits has already hit my bench.

Having worked on the RAN FAA Museum's Gannet back in 1983/84 ... Yeah, this is a very good design job! It really looks the part (if a little clean) & the ease of construction planning looks like it will make building it an excellent moment of modelling relaxation. Now I'm just waiting for them to arrive at my local supplier in Aus so I can buy one ... or two ... Maybe not three, SWMBO may get upset if I do that!😉

Love this kind of spotlight video, glad to hear about kits from a designer's perspective. Hope other brands and designers take note of some of the concepts, like interlocking parts and separate wing parts. Great job!

More videos like this! Love the acknowledgement that he made the effort to design the wing so it could be painted separately and then assembled at the end with the fuselae; so often these days it seems that painting the model isn't taken into account, especially when dealing with anything 3d printed (not that this is, but 3D designers often seem to be rushing to get their designs out and completely forget the modeler [end user] in the process and you end up with a one-unit "blob" that isn't paintable).

I saw a Real Gannet at HMAS ALBATROSS Navy museum in Oz, Thought what in interesting aircraft, i spent over 20 years in plastic engineering, So appreciate such wonderful design & moulding. Looking forward to my build. Excellent insightful Video.

Although I doubt I’ll ever build one unless it’s a commission work (the Gannet is just too ugly), I’ve seen several detailed reviews and the kit looks amazing. Airfix has come a long way and the kits their putting out now are a joy to build. It’s a testament to the people there at Airfix! Keep up the great work!!

Paramjit you've done a great aircraft justice. It was a bit of a surprise that Airfix did this aeroplane but it's such an interesting design but I shouldn't have been.

Hi Paramjit, a good job you've done there. As regards nose weight, as i understand it you use CAD to design the moulds. Doea not the CAD you use include weight and balance facilities (my CAD experience is for full size AC where it certainly can). Would it not be possible, as part of your design process to get CAD estimates (for balance about the landing gear) so that you can make a better first stab at how big a weight cavity you need a bit earlier in the process? Save you a bit of time and heart ache eh. Anyway, good work.

Very disappointed it didn’t work out to be the AEW3. You would have my money in an instant. The current offering does not fit with the new releases of the 1/48 Buccaneer. And I bet we will never see an RN Phantom in 1/48 scale either.

Airfix design team - How about a model kit of Stonehenge, or Tower Bridge in London, or a series on HISTORIC Icons of Britain, from the Peaks of Ben Nevis, Scarfell Pike and Snowden to a Road Tollbooth (so many concepts never covered) ????? Also how about a Double box of 1/72nd and or 1/46th scale Avro Arrow AND T.S.R.-2 or T.S.R.-2 and BAC/ E.E.Lightening or P-1127 AND latest VTOL development, Wakey, Wakey, up to date modern away from WW2 - Where's the Astronauts in 1/32nd and Lunar base..... Come on Guts.....
