Today we're reviewing the AirGradient ONE Indoor Air Quality Monitor. This indoor air-quality monitor can show all different types of readings from CO2 to NOX and TVOCs. This unit in particular is the AirGradient I-9PSL-DE and we found the accuracy of this unit to be exceptional, except for the CO2 readings which were consistently low compared to the Aranet4 which is (what we consider) the gold-standard for CO2 readings. However, the online dashboard that the AirGradient ONE Indoor has is phenomenal and very dynamic, and updates in real time. Big thank you and shoutout to AirGradient for sending this AirGradient ONE indoor air quality monitor out free for review!

AirGradient ONE - Award Winning Indoor Monitor
Indoor Air Quality Monitor Website Info:
The AirGradient ONE (Model I-9PSL) is an indoor air quality monitor enabling you to know if the air quality is healthy or not. It measures PM1, PM2.5, PM10, CO2, TVOCs, NOX, Temperature and Humidity and has a built-in color LED bar and small display.
It’s fully open-source and customizable, so you can extend it in whatever way you like.
Now with native Home Assistant support.
Why Indoor Air Quality Matters
We spend 80% of our time indoors, and the indoor air is often polluted not only from sources outside your home but also from indoor pollutants like off-gassing furniture, cooking, and cleaning chemicals. Also, houses with insufficient fresh air ventilation can have very high CO2 levels that can cause headaches and tiredness and greatly impact cognitive performance.
Measuring these air quality parameters can help you identify pollutants and, step by step, create a healthy and comfortable indoor environment.
AirGradient uses high-quality sensor modules from industry leaders like SenseAir, Sensirion, and Plantower. Every sensor goes through a multi-step testing and calibration process to ensure the highest accuracy.
The SenseAir S8 CO2 sensor utilizes NDIR technology for very accurate measurements. It auto-calibrates with an automatic baseline calibration (ABC) every seven days (customizable). High levels of CO2 can indicate insufficient ventilation and cause headaches, tiredness, and lower cognitive performance.
For PM2.5 measurements, the AirGradient uses the Plantower PMS5003 sensor with laser scattering technology, which has been extensively tested in various studies. Elevated levels of fine particles - especially below 2.5 microns - have been linked to a wide range of health issues, including premature mortality, heart or lung problems, acute and chronic bronchitis, asthma attacks, and respiratory symptoms. The sensor module is factory-calibrated.
TVOCs and NOX are measured with the Sensirion SGP41 TVOC/NOX sensor. TVOCs are organic chemicals that can easily vaporize and enter the air we breathe. These often have indoor causes like off-gassing furniture or aggressive cleaning liquids. NOX are harmful gases caused by indoor gas stoves or boilers. The measurements are based on the Sensirion VOC Index and represent changes and relative developments in VOC concentrations rather than absolute values. Please note that harmless substances like ethanol or sunscreen also trigger VOCs. So, an elevated value does not necessarily mean a harmful event.
Temperature and Humidity are measured with the Sensirion SHT3x/4x sensors, some of the most accurate in the market. These two air quality parameters can give you good information about indoor comfort levels and also indicate, for example, the risk of mold due to high humidity levels.
The monitor has a built-in OLED display to show the current air quality and can also be connected to 2.4 GHz WiFi networks to communicate with data platforms.
Additionally, the monitor has 11 RGB LEDs that shine through the enclosure and can be programmed to show you different color bands, e.g. for CO2 or PM. They can also be completely switched off.
We work very closely with several leading universities on air quality monitoring, and, due to its performance and affordability, our monitor has been selected for the largest study of classroom air quality in the world. I understand from other reviewers that you can recalibrate the CO2 sensor yourself. Have you tried this yet? I would be very interested.

It actually "auto-calibrates" itself weekly, which unfortunately isn't up to standards of the Aranet4 device for example. If you need CO2 detection, I recommend people get an Aranet4. They are (in my opinion) the gold standard for CO2 monitoring that I've tested so far.

What is your thoughts on the air things products?

@@shawn1869 I have the Airthings device and it depends what you’re trying to measure. CO2? Get an Aranet4. Radon? Airthings is fine and so is EcoQube. Particles? Air gradient is good and so is Airthings. FYI our outdoor air gradient appears to have broken. Waiting to see if air gradient sends a new one or what they’re gonna do.

16% of the Amazon reviews for Air Things say the units break after several months. I usually pay attention to those reviews because fake positive reviews often give a false sense of reassurance. I'm still trying to find an air quality monitor that is both affordable and doesn't break. Even $200 is a lot of money if the thing doesn't last but 3 months.

@@YTSparty After using the AirThings for a while now it's definitely not my favorite. My favorite Air Quality Monitors are #1 Aranet. They make the absolute BEST Co2 monitors, and I am testing their Radon and Radiation monitors right now, review will be up soon. They're awesome. Next #2 would probably be AirGradient. Mostly good, underwhelmed with their CO2 monitoring but the rest is decent. Do have an issue right now with the outdoor unit but working on it. Next would be AirThings, and lastly would be IQ Air, absolutely hated that device (review on channel). You can check our channel for tons of different reviews on these things.

Is the website served off the device or does AirGradient have access to all your data? And the website is served non-locally? So what happens when AirGradient goes away, how do you get your data then?

You can use their website (I do) or you can put it through HomeAssistant. This way, if AirGradient goes away, I believe everything will still work. As far as I know, YOU own your data, unlike other companies. But for ease of use and default, it's hosted on their side and yes they have access to see it. How do I know? I had an issue recently with mine and they were checking it for me once I gave them the Serial Number. But again, this is my choice, I don't want to set up HomeAssistant and I like their free interface.
