The Daisy 880 has been around for decades. It’s a great little airgun that’s worth a look. It’s fun and easy to shoot, with great performance and accuracy for the price point. How great? Watch the video and find out!

I got mine around 1973. Still have it today. What a fantastic rifle/ shotgun! I typically double or triple load BB’s by chambering one, retain the BB open in place with my fingernail, retract bolt to chamber a second BB, repeat. Magnet holds multiple in place. Mini shotgun too!!! So fun !

I shot 20,000 pellets through my 880 last year. A little pelgun oil about every 400 pellets is all its ever needed. At 22 yards it shoots 1/2 in groups with Air Arms diabolo pellets and about 1.5" groups with Crosman Premier Hollow Points. Walmart has them for 35$ usually. I put the 28$ Barska scope on it from walmart. Been a great rifle. For 63$ scoped you can't beat it. There are mods out there you can do with them if you like to tinker. Save your bbs. They shoot wildly compared to pellets. Get one. I have zero regrets.

I've had mine for a couple of weeks and put the Daisy/Winchester 4x32AO scope on it, that scope is TONS better than the one that comes with it and makes the 880 a far better shooter, IMO!

@@w3vjp568 They are great rifles. I have been using 880's for squirrel hunting (for food) for about 42 years now. They are super for squirrel hunting. They're quiet, safe (no worries about the pellet carrying too far like a .22 rimfire rifle would), light weight, mostly weather proof, and more than enough power to take down squirrels at 10-30 yards. And on top of all that, parts have been available for decades, so you can rebuild them over and over again, so they last forever. My oldest 880 is a '72 model. The one I currently use for hunting is an '85 model. Also have two of the modern versions, for friends to use when we all go hunting together.

@trevorjameson3213

Yep. It all started in 1972 with the 880 smooth bore. I bought one new that year, and still have it. Later on, they introduced the 881, with a rifled barrel. Then the 880 got a rifled barrel and they dropped the 881 from the lineup. In '85 I bought a rifled barrel 880, and that's the one I still use.

Not sure how i found this video but happy i did, lots of good memories( and a bad one, shot myself in the finger trying to unload a BB off the bolt) from my youth. I flat wore out my 880 in the mid 80's shooting more BB's than you could count and thousands of pellets. The thing was deadly accurate with the cheap tasco 4x scope i put on it. I learned a whole lot about marksmanship with it. My favourite thing was mini sniping with it, shooting 9mm brass at 33 yards was a true test of skill.

I had to make a 2nd comment. Alot of people envision the perfect SHTF survival rifle. Well this may be it. Reliable, accurate, powerful enough for taking small game, iron sights, light weight, cheap ammo and even shoots bb's. I defy a break barrel to beat this. Especially for the price.
@trevorjameson3213
@trevorjameson3213 2 года назад
A break barrel can't possibly beat an 880 for survival use, you're right. You mentioned all the great points, now I will add one more. The 880 is mostly weatherproof too.

I love the trigger. I have the metal sides receiver. I actually just went to pump it up and got the one pump push back change the seal and it is good to go again. A $1 chamber seal from Daisy got me up and going. It is super quiet. I really can't say enough good things about this gun and for nostalgia's sake is probably my favorite airgun. BTW, the Crosman Destroyer 7.4 gr pellet is a perfect match with the 880, as well as the other hunting-tipped pellets of similar gr. The 880 seems to have issues with pellets 7.9 and over - tried HN Crow Magnum 8 gr, @ 10 pumps . . . it was more of a poot than a shoot. 😂 I know people who use the 880 for hunting ground game birds (grouse, turkey), and they would never shoot a BB through the rifled barrel - the gun is so inexpensive, you can have one strictly for hunting with pellets, with a scope that costs more than the Daisy itself. 😂

I have a Daisy Powerline 901 in .177. I only shoot pellets, although it takes BBs. I don't want to wear the barrel with BBs. I bought it because I had a squirrel get in my attic and the humane trap I bought wasn't catching it fast enough. Before I went on a "hunt" the trap worked. I set it free by the county fair grounds. The few shots I took to familiarize myself with the rifle sparked a renewed interest in air rifles dormant since my adolescent years. This was all literally before the global pandemic in November 2019. I really like it. For suburb length property it's more than adequate. Any chance you may want to review this one Rick?

The 880 I had from the 80s was amazing. Bought one around 2013 and it is junk. The pump handle is crazy flimsy. In fact the pressure when pumping past 6 or 7 pumps make the pump handle bend enough to shorten enough not to even latch! WTF Daisy? My newer 760 works, but feels so cheap! The 1322/1377 and 2240 are still very well made, but their rifles are constructed like dart guns. BB's in that gun (because of the imperfection made in manufacturing the cheapies) Can be seen leaving the barrel for places unknown. Tis better to spend a bit more for "match" BB's, which fly true.

Good review Rick, lots of information in this one. I have a question or ask an opinion, what do you think of a rifled barrel for BB shooting? Won't the BB's wear out that rifling a lot faster than lead pellets'?
@2needey1
@2needey1 3 года назад
Yes, but I had an 880 for ten years and the accuracy and performance didn’t really change. A small amount of oil once a month was all I did.
@trevorjameson3213
@trevorjameson3213 2 года назад
You're not going to hurt the rifling on an 880. It's designed to fire both BB's and pellets, so they used a very shallow, flat type rifling to prevent damage from BB's. Plus, if you buy good BB's such as Daisy BB's, which are zinc plated, or Crosman BB's, which are copper plated, you certainly don't have to worry about your barrel, because both zinc and copper are much softer than the steel barrel, they will not damage it. However, just don't use those anodized black BB's, the coating is too thin to provide any protection. When people talk about not shooting BB's in a rifled barrel, that is really intended to mean barrels strictly made for lead pellets, such as the break barrel pellet rifles, PCP rifles, or the old Benjamin or Sheridan rifles (with brass barrels). Rifles that are dedicated strictly to shooting pellets will have deeper and sharper rifling, which will probably be damaged by BB's of any kind.

The only problem I have had with the 880 is the difficulty loading pellets with an after market scope (not the garbage scope that came with it) mounted. Higher rings may have helped but I could hardly squeeze my finger in between the loading tray and the scope. But, and a big BUT, the rifle is super accurate considering I payed less than $50 for it. Pumping it is easy as it doesn't seem to get harder with each stroke. My only suggestion to Daisy would be come out with a similar rifle in a .22 single shot pellet only version. The secret I found to loading pellets is to push the bolt lever forward to where the probe covers the loading slot for the BB's (the rear edge of the metal tray) and putting a in pellet. I do not like the idea of having to cock the rifle before pumping it, but it is a minor complaint. I had have never shot BB's through it. Ended giving it to a neighbor's kid. But had contemplated getting another. It is, in my opinion, an amazing gun for the price.

@@thomasmotherway8169 I had that same problem loading in pellets with a fat scope in the way. I found a temporary solution by using needlenose tweezers to fit the pellet under the scope. Then I built an improvised pellet "magazine" using parts of a cap loader like the ones they use at vintage gun shows to load caps into a LeMat Revolver. It's basically a cap loader with a long snoot that clips onto the side, and you slide the snoot under the scope when the bolt is open and nudge a pellet in, then you pull it back out when you close the bolt to fire. They sell something similar to it at Walmart, but it only works for break barrel guns.

@trevorjameson3213
@trevorjameson3213 2 года назад
They make one with the white dot, and one with fiber optic. Usually the one with the white dot comes with a small scope, the fiber optic one does not come with a scope. You can order the fiber optic sight from Daisy, and replace the white dotted one. It's tricky getting the old one out though, you have to be careful not to bend the barrel shroud.

too much oil, its dieseling... or is it? I dieseled pellets for years unknowingly, always kept my tin about 1/4 full of WD-40, pellets are wet to keep the barrel filmed helping skirt seal, skirt half full detonates to add about 150 fps. they say BAD IDEA, and it really is for high power +1,000 fps air rifles, but these sling pellets at 600, so dieseling 750 fps isn't too bad on the 880. its a 20-25 yard gun (max), it likes heavy 10 grain pellets. try dieseling at your own risk, my 880 didn't care, if it dies (it wont) parts aren't very expensive anyway.

They used to. Back in the '80's they made the model 922, which was .22 cal with a five shot pellet clip. It had the usual plastic stock and forearm, but a metal pump handle and receiver. Then later, around 2009 I think, Daisy released the model 822, which was a .22 cal with no pellet clip. But, it had a wooden stock and forearm, and a metal receiver. I have one that I found at an air gun show three years ago, and it's really cool. Looks exactly like an 880, but with wood, and in .22 cal.

Replace that crappy plastic pump handle with a metal one. They can be found on ebay sometimes, and at air gun shows/swap meets. That's where I found two of them and it makes a big difference in the feel of the gun and comfort of pumping.
