Good afternoon MR. Montour having worked many many years as an aircraft refueller in YUL it saddens me to see this situation coming about I fear that many airlines will not be able to bounce back sad also I find that in this industry there is no more prestige and professionalism and much less respect also what didn't help was the deregulation in the sky yes it was good for consumers lower ticket prices but the long run not good stay safe you and your family also thank you to say it like it is

Mentour Pilot, do you accept biblical cosmology, namely that the earth is flat, stationary, geocentric, and Firmament-enclosed? Or alternatively, do you believe in the devil's vehemently anti-biblical and anti-scientific heliocentric model of the universe that society tries to force everyone to believe and without ever questioning it (and for which there is no legitimate proof whatsoever, only man-made cartoon images and hoaxes like the moon landing and ISS)? By the way, I'm quite sure you've never seen the earth curve and/or wobble on its axis and/or chase the sun through ever-expanding space and/or be a ball and/or tried to calculate how to land on a moving runway (as you'd need to do *if* the earth were moving, which it isn't). And you've probably also never adjusted any of your flight paths to account for the earth's completely non-existent curvature.

I would love to see an update on this, and where airlines are at now. I have had to fly a few times in the pandemic because my partner is from Norway (we live in England), and there were a lot of cancellations of flights, where we needed to rebook. This was in a “good” period in the autumn where the rules relaxed slightly for a short while, so I assume problems are still ongoing? It’s a real shame because air crew are so skilled and have worked so hard to get to that point. I really hope that one day we will get back to normal.

With your last tip for the future: * Keep your skills sharp * Hunker down and find something to be financially sustained. Not being in the aviation industry myself, these two tips are useful for everyone. In the Mid 2000s, the economy tanked a bit here in the USA. I was recently released from military service and went to school to be an electrician. When I completed my program I could not find a job anywhere, the larger companies where I lived laid off up to 70% of their employees, and most of the smaller companies collapsed. I found employment in fast food, but I kept the knowledge fresh (reviewing my manuals and the electrical codebook weekly), and most of the skills I learned in my training sharp. It took a few years to get back into the electrical field, but I was ready when the opportunity arose.

To be fair, many of these operators have been skating on thin ice for some time now. In the case of Norwegian we've been expecting the failure of the entire company for years, but with their MAXes grounded and now this - the future's not looking too bright. I imagine there'll be a lot of opportunism by the survivors with aircraft, routes, staff, and those important landing slots.

Having lived almost 70 years and having experienced financial cutbacks personally in the past I can say something with a bit of deja vu. Seeing all those parked aircraft, and knowing the full complement of flight crew necessary to operate those aircraft, the bean counters will bring back the lowest paid, fully capable employees to re-start their operations. My guess is this is what they are doing now with regards to who is operating their flights. It's a perfect time to shed expenses, especially salaries. I have seen this before, and I believe this will happen again. It's only good business. Unions, in this situation would certainly help with seniority issues, but if anyone thinks bean counters have a conscience, think again. Best of luck Petter, I'm sure you're well regarded by your employer.

We'll also see a shedding of city centre offices. Expensive premises, expensive staff, expensive travel bills. I can also see a shedding of expensive and often unproductive middle management, just as IBM did in the late 1980s when it posted its big loss. The world's proven that it can still operate with just leaders and do-ers. A good time to cut costs of professional meeting organisers and the vague brigade in the middle who deliver the least value for their salaries.

@@MentourPilot Yes, just be prepared, if you/someone get unemployed and you say "I am taking any job, to finance my family, even if it were washing dishes somewhere", you will find out, that 100 other people want this one dish washing job too and they will not take a pilot for it. That was my experience several times many years ago, being an engineer and runnig out of money, no one wanted to hire me, because they said "honestly, we don't believe you want to do this, you want a better job". No matter how honestly I tried to explain, they thought I am doing this just "as if" for any other aim (e.g. requirements for the employment office or so). And they say "well if you will get a pilot-/engineer job again maybe in 2 months, you will quit, we prefer someone, who wants to stay and do this job here for a long time." And at more qualified jobs employers say "oh no, that does not fit exactly what we need", because enough guys with really fitting jobs where queuing already. Reality is extremly tough. In 99% one gets a chance for a job via friends who know someone who someone... Connecting with as many people as one can, even with guys, with who one rather would not connect with, doing it despite, connecting with as many people as possible is my main tip.
@BrickworksDK

@@mattesrocket That's been my experience as well. As a programmer - and with the gig-economy being what it is - I have often found myself unemployed for a period of time. Sometimes just a few months. Sometimes a year. And every time I've tried to get that type of unskilled job - because any job is better than no job, right - I have been turned away.
@mattesrocket
@mattesrocket 4 года назад
@@BrickworksDK exactly, that's why I am writing it, the earlier one knows, that this can happen, the better, so one have to figure out any other, thinkable method, like I said try to connect with any possible people, even people, one rather wouldn't connect with, or thinking if one goes back for a while into the region, where the parents or other relatives are, because of new-old connections, or really forcing oneself thinking VERY out of the box, what is not easy at all, as one is somehow always deep in certains patterns of thinking. If authorities for unemployed people don't help really, maybe other authorities of the city help with current time-limited programms one haven't heard yet, or so. Very difficult anyway to find something, but the earlier one realises, that it's not working "just" browsing many job sites for any job, the better.

The other aspect of this is that large, strong airlines like American, Lufthansa Group, Delta, etc. have voiced that they will use this as an opportunity to shrink back to more profitable, leaner organizations by speeding up retirements of older, less efficient aircraft, eliminating less profitable, non-essential routes and not re-hiring everyone who worked for them before, especially contractors. They are expecting that the industry won’t rebound for another 2-3 years, given the spread of the disease and the lack of vaccinations. On the flip side, a shortage of pilots is no longer an issue.
@bruxi78230

George L ----- Both American and United, which are both well-known names are financial disasters. I wouldn't classify either one as "strong airlines". We don't even know if there will be flights on that route in a years time, but if there aren't the voucher will expire and we will have lost a big chunk of cash. I graduated from Dalhousie Law School in Canada back in 2000. Decided to pursue my aviation career instead, and put the law degree on the wall. I already had my Class IV instructor rating in Canada, and had been doing that part time at CFB Shearwater, outside Halifax. I had completed my CFI training during my second summer in law school down in Houston, TX. I found a very busy flight school in southern California (ADP now extinct) and finished my multi-commercial and MEI within a couple of weeks, worked at the flight school for a couple of months, and then left to a regional airline. September 11th, 2001, was my first day of upgrade training.......needless to say, I had to sit for another 6 months as F.O. till I had another opportunity. This should have been my first warning. But, like a fool, I stuck with it...... I obtained my ATP(L) 6 months later and worked my way up in the airline to check airman, sim instructor (at flight safety in Atlanta, GA) and flight/ground instructor. After 10 years in the industry, in 2010, I had had enough......... left to pursue my legal career. I'm now practicing law, home every night, weekends, stat holidays..... The pilot lifestyle sucks!!! Plain and simple. I don't miss it at all...... My advice? Get out while you can..... Start upgrading your education and find another line of work. The airline industry is a complete joke, and the people who continue to romanticize it should be ashamed...........You're an expendable glorified bus driver.......sorry, but those of us who know, know.

I'm a captain at a wholly owned regional by AA in the U.S. Its been rough. No furloughs until Sept but flights have been cut down by about 70%. I'm a reservist as are most at my airline now and I love flying but it sucks flying maybe 10 hours a month. I wasn't flying much even before the virus hit but that's another story. However we are starting to see more pax on the planes as a whole but I don't know how much damage has already been done. On a different note, things are starting to reopen here. Beaches in FL will be opening next week because people are fed up.

Best of all is it's been flying our employees around and they are having a blast.... I'd love to name my company, but they have a strict social media policy. The USA has really just four airlines (United, American, Delta and Southwest). All of these are too big to fail. Before deregulation we had Western, Eastern, Braniff, Continental, TWA, Northwest, Hughes Air West, PanAm, Capital Air, Frontier and PSA. None of the big four should be bailed out. New airlines should rise from the ashes of these failed oligopolies.
@552mustang
@552mustang 4 года назад
And thats why none of those American airlines will fail. Consolidation was the greatest thing that could have happened to American airlines. Everything is streamlined from maintenance to safety and they are large enough to withstand things better than the smaller fragmented ones and worst of all the state owned airlines of other countries.

So you have a back-up job, and wouldn't be jobless for up to 2 years. Same here, after Thomas Cooke died that eliminated their competition on a tour I fly. Instead of taking up the route and taking on the capacity RA just doublef their prices. Given that after this crisis the pilots, airports and planes will still exist it might be good for the customer if a few airlines go under. Then a new company can buy the assets at a discount and just perhaps a new company would treat is customers better than RA.
