I like how the instructor doesn't just say he's over IFR fixes inbound to an uncontrolled field. He's right....that is meaningless to VFR targets.

It's really great to see a bloke who takes pride in his aeroplane's appearance - pulling out the cloth to wipe the bugs off the cowl inlets, spinner, etc. What a gem of an aeroplane.

Wow, I don't think I realized just how integrated ILS & AP could be. That was amazing, and, pilot load was virtually nil. It took more effort to describe its capability than to fly the plane. Granted, the whole flight WAS VFR, allowing for serious comfort for both PIC & cinematographer (pilot!) AND a Skylane is a pretty stable craft (weigh/flow/design) with a fat safe envelope creating a level of ease (watching). But, even with a low blood pressure teacher, the in depth explanation of what & why each step was done, the actual 'flight time' was exceptionally brief & uneventful. I really loved the suspend time at hitting the waypoints- wow, that is pretty awesome that it 'knows' to leave some space to grab the line! one onethousand, two onethousand, three onethousand....TURN NOW! I've watched experienced pilots struggle harder with less integrated systems and more complex craft, so- I was ready (napkin in hand, actually) for a 30 minute sweat fest! THAT WAS AWESOME!

David, they weren't doing an ILS approach, they were doing an RNAV GPS to LPV minimums. But if they were doing an ILS approach it would do the exact same thing! When they select the approach in the GTN 650, it'll tune the NAV radio to the correct frequency. You'd just have to identify it with the morse code and you'd be good to go.

@@nickbike Sorry, the excitement of the moment. EXTREMELY cool RNAV GPS system!!! One definitely needs to know: what, when & how you give the system data (flight levels at waypoints at transition to pattern entry) but, since there is such reduced pilot load if it doesn't happen, you could correct it (program) and/or hand fly it re-engage. Great teacher, great system & good video. Length was needed to show the complexity of data input & how to adjust.

Before attempting to use automation especially in inclement weather, it is essential to understand the system logic, I agree with Denis 100%. I like his teaching method, hands on, calm but very effective. I loved the analogy between the vertical speed dial and trim wheel, brilliant! Great video 👍

Quick comment about canceling IFR. Dennis explains it well saying that if there's no chance that a cloud will obscure your approach then cancel. Chops comes back with, "what if you have to overshoot/ do a missed approach?" Great question! The answer here is that if the ceilings are high enough to do VFR laps in the pattern, then you are fine to cancel. If you are canceling IFR that far out, the ceiling should be high enough that you won't do the publish missed if you have to go around due to a bulked landing. You'd just go into the VFR traffic pattern.

Excellent video explaining the true pros and cons of automated flight. I loved what he said “ if u have a robot flying your aircraft, u need to know how to turn the robot off” I’m gonna remember that one. Auto pilot is an excellent safety feature and this describes exactly how is should be looked upon and used. Very wise man. You can tell Dennis is a CFI, a total professional, that's the difference between him and Osama. Dennis teaches and encourages. I sense a bit of attitude or frustration when you're learning something new and I've noticed it in a few videos. Relax and enjoy these opportunities that you're fortunate enough to have. Good vid!

I definitely wouldn’t describe myself as having an attitude, but I am definitely frustrated. Dennis is helping me get through it, but my schedule is not favorable for any sort of focused training, so the IFR road has been a hard one for me

I love listening to Dennis speak about how the change in avionics, which required changes in the servos, etc... When I saw this was 32 minutes+, I was afraid this might be a bit boring, but I found it very interesting because of the commentary from Dennis...

Awesome! I like watching you learn Steve, because you seem to think a lot like me in the training environment. You see the small differences between what you’re taught and expected to do on a check flight, and what you might be doing in the real world, and you’re smart enough to be skeptical and inquire about which is right. Dennis is a fantastic instructor and does a great job explaining the hows and whys. Especially the whys of certain procedures or timing of procedures. He’s good at not only telling you what you need to do, but why you need to do it, and why you need to do it the way that you do it. This is an area I’ve seen a lot of instructors fall short. They are really good at telling you what you need to do, but not so good at telling you why. So when what you need to do conflicts with something else you need to do it can create points of confusion. But Dennis shows you the common sense approach to why you need to do what you’re doing. I hope this comment made sense. Lol!! Nice work!!!

I appreciate that you did not make this a two-parter. It isn't always easy to find the other half. Sometimes part two doesn't get uploaded until weeks after you were hot to see it. (Not talking bout you.) I'm watching on my Android; not on a 160-inch plasma screen (that I don't have) so instrument and control close-ups are much appreciated. 🛩️

The C182 you flew in this video is my dream aircraft. The panel, the autopilot, everything about it, well... not the seats lol. It's stable enough for instrument training, fast enough to be a good travelling aircraft, slow enough to build time comfortably, simple enough that annuals aren't terrible (until it's time to overhauls the engine). Great video!

There was not a question about removing that comment specifically, it was not a conversation about how much (if at all) to trim the rough cut down - in the end, based on the feedback, I trimmed it by only about 10%

While the driver in me says “where’s the fun in that?”, the husband/dad/friend in me realizes that “get-there-itis” seems to result from those flights where you are going “somewhere” for some particular purpose or event, adding a few stressors to that pending “helmet fire”(love his terminology, it’s memorable). That’s where the glass panel and automation shine. I like the approach of going clean-slate on the upgrade. Someone like Mike Patey is the person you want sorting out your wiring. OCD on correct and pretty is always good in machines you depend on. Another great video, Steve.👍👍

Dennis is such a good teacher. My double I taught me no more than 10 degrees of flaps in a C172 on an instrument approach and not even to add more flap when the runway environment is in sight (to avoid unstabilizing the approach). Probably different in the faster 182.

I've started flying again after walking away from aviation almost 100% for ...22 years... I find your videos to be really interesting because they are all like me -- learning as you go. And especially this one: I've described it to my friends like going into a comma, then waking up 22 years later. The 'bike riding' is the same, but I've woken up in the future with flat panels and GPS. I'm trying to film as much as I can as I go so that I can learn and relearn as I go. Good stuff.

I haven't flown one in forever, but I agree with Dennis about the 182.... great airplanes. I did not realize that about their safety record, but I am not surprised. Such a solid platform and great all around machine.

I have a whopping 2 hours in a 182 for the Civil Air Patrol ... It was really hard to stall it for practice and, when it did stall, it just kind of floated down like, "Meh, I'm falling. So?"!

My 182 has vgs stall is well below horn , does not drop a wing, no shudder, only indication is 400 ft/min down, with nose up attitude

I have a 79Q 182 with nearly identical avionics and I can testify that between the radios and autopilot, it is a beast of an IFR cross country machine!! Love this episode!

Awesome job editing Flight Chops! Loving this IFR content as I’m working on mine too! My flying club has a couple aircraft that use the gtn650; and we should be getting G5’s soon as they gyros where out. I’m also trying to talk them into a new autopilot. This 182 has the dream IFR avionics suite. Thanks again for sharing!

Had a very similar setup in a 177 that I did in my training/checkride. At first, I was overwhelmed and just wanted to fly by hand. After some time, I’m so glad my instructor made me use the systems I had available. Yes, we hand flew as well considering I don’t have these avionics in my 180. But was very eye opening and great to learn.

Great video, I noted most aircraft of that perod have ash trays fitted, amazing how attitudes and times change. I had my flight training in the early 80s in the Cessna 152 - they all had ash trays too!

I've been flying IFR since 1972 and in 2005 I bought a Grumman Tiger and completely upgraded the automation to the same level as this 182. Anyone wondering if it is worth the money to upgrade, the increase in safety and my comfort level was well worth the $30K it cost for the 3 axis autopilot, WAAS GPS capability, etc. Approaches to minimums changed from high anxiety to feeling like I was the second pilot ensuring the pilot flying (the autopilot) was on track. It truly changed my flying life. Go for it! And Steve, the length of the video is perfect and, as usual, you have an amazing knack for producing useful content that is an absolute joy to watch!

Great video, definitely not too long. Love Dennis. He's the personification of a great flight instructor. Down to earth, knowledgeable, speaks in terms that are easy to understand, direct and honest about the need to understand the basics before moving on to complex systems. You're lucky to have him as a resource.

I have a 182Q with the same setup (GTN650 - G5 - JPI 830) except my autopilot is a Stec 55X. I've been searching for the ideal power/flap settings during my approaches. You're flying the approach at 21" of MP then once the autopilot intercepts the G/S you immediately reduce RPM to 1800 and add 10 degrees of flaps, speed drops into the white arc and you add 20 degrees of flaps until the runway is made. I have done about 60 approaches with this setup but I am looking forward to giving your settings a try. BTW - there is so much you can do with the Garmin panel especially when using Connext and an iPad - One of my favorites is how the iPad and GTN650 transfer flight plans and changes back and forth to each other. It really compliments the C182, I just can't stop flying the darn thing. Thanks for the great video!

Some great looking planes in that hanger... I'd sure take that 182 , I think I'd change the seat color for a nice saddle tan,.. thats all. I'm an old 1978 trained pilot and the new avionics are so cool... flew a Garmin 430 and was blown away by what it would do,... the newer bigger stuff is AWESOME. Nice Video. Thank You.

Fantastic video - this video gets an A plus - And this flight instructor is absolutely amazing. The guy takes complex concepts and makes them very simple. Man I now understand things about auto pilot systems that have been a mystery to me because nobody has been able to explain it to me like this CFI. I hope to be a CFI someday, and if I can be 1/4 of what this guy is, I'll be on cloud 9 !!

I really liked seeing this panel configuration. I have a Cardinal RG With a similar panel , but no GFC500 autopilot or G5 HSI yet. Waiting for certification by Garmin. This video is spot on what I will have, and the best illustration yet on how to to use it in real time. Well done!

Very impressive and intelligent CFI. Knows his stuff but what is really impressive is that his decisions and methods involve lateral thinking rather than blindly following convention. Good upload!

Such a cool video. I am doing that almost exact same upgrade on my VFR only 182 E that I found last summer 2020. I have picked Dual G5’s and a gps175 and a gnc 255 Nav/com. along with my installed Insight G4. I aim to start my IFR training behind this new setup. And hope to install a gfc500 autopilot later . So cool to see it all in action. I am going to shop the autopilot install around. I will check out the shop that was mentioned. Safe and happy flying.
